“Goddess of MARS” is part of a series where I portray the planets of the solar system as goddesses, based on the appearance of each celestial body, their symbols, their cultural importance and their respective gods. You can already see in my profile NEPTUNE, URANUS, SATURN and JUPITER.
Mars is named after the Roman god of war, representing masculinity and youth. It is also often referred to as the “Red Planet” because the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. Its astronomical symbol (♂) is called “The Spear of Mars” and besides representing the male gender, it is also a stylized version of the god’s spear and shield. Her throwing spear is based somewhat on the shape of the symbol.
She has a pixie haircut to look more tomboyish, dark skin as an adaptation to intense ultravioleta light, and a scarf and a bodysuit to protect herself from the largest dust storms in the Solar System. She carries a little bottle of water in her sash, both as a way of remembering the ancient surface environment of Mars and as a way to hold hope for the future.
Aries is the zodiac sign ruled by Mars.
A little over three months ago, I drew a scrappy first version of this page, having not drawn any sequential art since I left university 5yrs ago.
It's been redrawn since then, and is now the first page I have completed (though I still need to add a poster to the bus). Fitting, as it is also Page One.
My wonderful Dad recently sold one of his guitars to purchase a new iMac for me. So I could actually stand a chance of colouring this comic, without the constant freezing and crashes of my old computer. 🖤
I've pushed myself since it's arrival, and being much less proficient at digital colour than with pen and ink. This has taken me the better part of four full days to colour. With numerous YouTube tutorials assisting me along the way! I've learnt a lot.
So I'm sharing it with you.. Looking for some feedback/critique. Especially from those with a knowledge of photoshop!
