Thanks to Patrick arranging a mock tri for us yesterday, I learned a LOT in terms of where I am at being ready for IM Arizona 70.3. Trying to put it all together reminded me that I have a ways to go. I'm now doing some strange slapping thing on the swim with my left hand, but I am getting faster. My speed is up on my bike, but I need to build confidence staying in the aero position. The run was a sheeeet show because I didn't have hydration on me. I got cocky (stoooopid) thinking it was just a 10k. Ummmm... bad idea. Legs had it, but heat and dehydration messed me up mentally and I spent the entire time staring at my watch wishing it would just be done and blurting out "I hate this!" quite a bit. 😂 My mental game really needs work. Oh, and my other observations were the other cyclists out at Sauvie Island. SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE! No helmets, riding three abreast, riding down the middle of the road, not looking back when making sudden changes, not calling out when coming up on another cyclist? AUGH!!!! Please read the following tips and let's all enjoy a happier, safer ride out there mmmmkay? https://www.coeursports.com/blogs/latest/being-safe-on-two-wheels #coeursports#coeurteam2017#heartandcourage#livavow#livbeyond#liv#bikelove#tri#triathlon#swimbikerun#ironman#IMArizona703#training#swim#trimom#trainwithyourspouse#pfishertrainer#cycling#running
I learned something today. This morning's MTB ride in Forest Park was the perfect metaphor for how I approach life and what I need to change. Patrick and I did an out and back on a rather tame stretch and yet I was soooo slow going out. Focusing on every rock, loose gravel section and divot. Painfully so. I could see how each of these things could send me sailing over my handle bars or toss me off. I was miserable. (And yet Patrick was ever so patient with me!) I literally sucked the joy right out of the activity. At the turn around point, I decided I had had enough of myself, and was NOT going to go back the same way I went out. I stopped looking at the details that could cause failure and opened myself up to the possibility of success looking at the WHOLE TRAIL. Surely I kept my eyes on the trail, but I thought big picture - MACRO - not MICRO. And guess what? I was faster by a lot, I enjoyed the ride, and I grew not only in confidence, but skill! Total win! Have you ever gotten so bogged down in the details that you ruin the reason you started in the first place? I screw myself over more times than I care to admit with that attitude and I need to apply what I learned today broadly to my life. THE WHOLE JOURNEY - not the perceived problems that could mess it all up. Thanks for reading. It was an "a-ha" moment for me and I'm hoping some of you can relate and maybe even share how you have overcome similar difficulties. I need to not manifest my reality through fear I alone create! #heartandcourage#thebraveathlete#coeursports#livcycling#liv#bikelove#pfishertrainer#trainwithyourspouse#livtempt
FULL DISCLOSURE. We went out to the Gorge on Saturday to run our favorite trail and even add to our 12, a 3-mile BRUTAL tear-inducing (later regretted) gravel stretch with 10% grades for one segment. It sucked. It was one of the UGLIEST runs we've done in awhile. We were under-hydrated, NOT properly fueled, or prepared for the heat. We bonked and we WALKED! Like a LOT of it. The reason I share is that, it happens to all of us. And it's OK. In fact, Patrick shared a few times that it is a part of training. Suffer. Embrace the suck. Learn from it and by all means, never take your ability for granted. Just because you run the distance often, does not mean that the runs will be the same. I was humbled this weekend and recognized the error in our ways. We'll be back and we will not repeat this lesson. #heartandcourage#braveathlete#thriveinyourlife#coeurteam2017#coeursports#running#run#swimbikerun#trimom#triathlontraining#trainwithyourspouse#imarizona703#ironman#tri
Blessed is a word thrown around often, but I truly and authentically feel I am being married to this guy. He shows me love through his words, but more importantly, his actions. Today Patrick did what he does every year, and that is be an enormous support at our ALS team Ride. He drives me to and from the event, readies my bike, captures the entire event for our team, and then... waits. Patiently. For MANY hours. He's never surly or acts put out, he is always attentive and more than willing to help. I made him a lovely dinner when we got home tonight of grilled cod with mango salsa and mashed coconut sweet potatoes to show my appreciation. #blessed#defeatalsoregon#defeatals#heartandcourage#luckywife#pfishertrainer#iamhis#trainwithyourspouse
Did you know... in your noggin you have a chimp, professor, and computer? YES! YES, YOU DO! And today I told my chimp to shut the f*ck up and let me ride! I highly recommend the book referenced in this excerpt- http://womensrunning.competitor.com/2017/06/books/brave-athlete-chimp-professor_76594 I went back out to The Dalles to the scene of the accident and rode that mofo and a lot more - I even tackled Rowena with high heat and strong winds off the Gorge! Sports are MENTAL. It's good to be physically able, but all the training in the world won't do anything for irrational fears that are flung like chimp shit all over your brain. It wasn't easy today and several times I begged my professor to pull the facts! And eventually it happened! I'm so happy I didn't give up. 😊💘 #heartandcourage#coeursports#cycling#swimbikerun#trimom#triathlon#thriveinyourlife#triathlontraining#imarizona703#ironman#pfishertrainer#trainwithyourspouse
Patrick makes me look better than I am! The learning curve for mountain biking is as STEEP as the terrain! We set out to ride and I realized after a few minutes on an intermediate course that I needed the proverbial "bunny slope". Patrick could have easily tackled it, but was so supportive of my need to dial it back. I will always be the initially reluctant athlete, needing a longer mental ramp to gain courage. I'm sure a time is to come when I'll tear it up, but this past weekend was not it. I see more mountain biking in my future to be sure, but I definitely need technical skills training. #pfishertrainer#coeursports#heartandcourage#liv#actuallyican#mtb#mountainbike#mountainbiking#bikelove#hoodriver#trainwithyourspouse
This trip to Santa Rosa was such a needed break. While there was a lot of hard work leading up to this trip, but it was something we approached as a couple. Encouraging and picking each other up when the other was mentally or physically tired. I love my husband more and more everyday. Here's to many more adventures and handling life's trials together! #trainwithyourspouse#ironman#imsantarosa703#tri#trimom#swimbikerun#vacayyay
I will always have his back and he mine. 💘 Sometimes in life we stumble and fall (me more often than most it seems) but a great partner will pick you back up and encourage you to continue on. Training for my first tri has given me soooo many new metaphors that describe our relationship. Today's was that no matter what, we take care of each other. I had to stop short of my goal, but gained a new found appreciation for what it means to be there for one another. I'm truly grateful. #trainwithyourspouse#cycling#ironmancoach#quintanaroo#ironman#imsantarosa703#heartandcourage
Its drag your spouse workout day. Haha Jen and Kevin are so fun to train. This actually was a great exercise for them. It was a drag pull 20 yards, 10 dumbbell push press and 20 dips in the circuit. 4 rounds. #southtowngym#trainwithyourspouse
Heading out to our group run this am, I wasn't really that into going. It was cold and raining really hard. But like so many runs turn out (read: all runs) I am sooo glad I went. Patrick's client and friend, Paul, hit a huge milestone of running 10 miles! He is training for his first half in April and been working so damn hard with Patrick four days a week for the past three months. (Three months ago he could run NO miles!) And my friend Nikki, beasted out 17.75 STRONG miles in preparation for her first marathon since having kids! We celebrated with Japanese pastry - which meant I HAD to break my no bread diet. Worth every damn bite I might add! Oyatsupan Bakery is the REAL DEAL! What a great day! Thank you Captain Hai and Sunstone! #riseandthrive#heartandcourage#trainwithyourspouse#training#running#run#eatallthecarbs
Oh my ❤! Patrick printed, framed and hung the cool photos he took of us riding along the Deschutes River a couple weeks ago! I love his creative and sentimental side and the memories on our wall of our adventures! #swoon#trainwithyourspouse
In three words I call this picture: Overcoming irrational fear. Descending a steep slope to traverse a water hazard and climb back up was a first and I will be the first to admit I melted down before this was taken. I was pissed at myself for being so scared. I am frequently like this when attempting firsts and I don't like myself when I am. Doing one thing a day that scares me is my goal, but I often don't accomplish it with grace. Still, I work at it. And like in this pic, I eventually conquer my fear. Thank you Patrick for emotionally carrying me across. ❤ #heartandcourage#trainwithyourspouse#deschutesrivertrail#mtb#mountainbiking#pfishertrainer#coeurteam2017#coeursports#liv#livcycling#livtempt
A great way to get your significant other into the jiu jitsu lifestyle you love so much. @nurse_jits can vouch for that. She started training and never looked back.
