#PonyAcrossAmerica When we got into Theodore Roosevelt National Park I couldn't understand all the warning signs regarding water and safety. "They're just little hills," I said. "We can see the tops of all of them from the car. In fact, we can see for miles from the car. It's all just flat."
Sara told me not to be so dismissive. "It's still an incline!"
We went to the petrified forest, where we had to go through a large warning sign and a gate that warned us that we were entering an unmonitored wilderness area and we did so at our own risk. If we didn't take the proper precautions such as water and directions, the sign warned us, no one would be coming to look for us.
Boy did I learn my lesson. It was hot. It was dry. The air was dusty, and gritty, so it wasn't long before even breathing felt heavy and like a chore. I felt like I was panting. When I drank water the dust coating my tongue made the water unsatisfying. Despite the dry air, I began to feel like I was moving through something thick. Pony was panting heavily.
In the Petrified Forest, it actually wasn't very long before I threw up my hands we and turned back. I think I have a lot of grit, but I don't like to be literally filled with it, and of course more so I was worried about Pony (who I had given all my water to). We didn't stay out quite long enough to be frightened, but we were close. And fortunately we never strayed from the path and Sara is good remembering forks, so we got back fine- and when I later looked we had only done a quarter mile!
It was definitely a new experience, and I can understand Theodore Roosevelt's love of the challenge. Dear hikers, don't count the Badlands out.
