Hammy dealt the final, fatal blow to the Big Bad of our adventure, and my weirwood dagger magically grew into a weirwood sword.
(I chose a miniature mounted on a horse because, well, he's the kind of guy that you just *picture* riding a horse even if he's not.)
The LOWEST paying majors! For an idea, full time minimum wage is around $15k to 22k a year, so many of these jobs are just double of that. A good wage should be around $75,000+. I was a biology major myself before I changed my major, and that low salary was one of the reasons why...
And that's officially a wrap on Berkeley. Said goodbye to my apartment and my wonderful roommates. It wouldn't be a proper sendoff without a meal from one of my favorite Berkeley spots. The farewell tour concludes. 📸:@auroras_aura
Don't do anything crazy... personally I've never stayed up all night in high school. Just be calm. If your As go to Bs it's not the end of the world. You will go to college and have a great career. Your finals don't control that.
If I had to put my finger on a friend + mentor who really helped push me in the right direction, I'd say this guy right here would be one of them. That's @cyrus_sutton.
A few years back we rolled out of LAX and pointed his Sprinter van towards a hidden spot between the Mojave desert and Joshua Tree. Apparently the road wasn't too bad, the hot spring was all time, and there was a flat spot to park the van with a few bars of service. Sounded pretty epic.
We were headed out there to start making a film for @guayaki that would profile @risingappalachia, a sister duo committed to inspiring social and environmental justice through their music and community events.
Before this, Cyrus and I had crossed paths a year back thanks to an introduction by big wave / life Jedi @gerglong while I was a fledging grad student at #ucberkeley .
I was passionate about ecology but had no formal training in filmmaking. Cyrus did. He won an Emmy Award, was a talented filmmaker, and was making an important film that explored the complex nature of GMOs called @island.earth.
Having never met before, I made a plan to learn as much about GMOs as I could then hopefully impress him with my knowledge so that he might hire me. I scrounged some money together, flew to Hawaii, rented a van, and spent a month learning about the #GMO industry's outdoor chemical research experiment, the Hawaiian Islands. Once I ran out of money and time, I lined up a call with @cyrus_sutton.
We talked about the fact that 90% of the seeds that are grown today are essentially owned by 6 major chemical companies, and that the GMO movement is about selling more of chemicals, not using less. "Its not about feeding the world; it's about making a handful of people richer than they are right now." As said by Dr. Tyrone Hayes, a UC Berkeley Integrative Biology Professor.
After nearly a three hour conversation he offered me a position as an assistant producer for @island.earth. I still think about how that moment changed my life.
Thanks @cyrus_sutton and happy 35th birthday! 🎉🎉🎉
No surprises here, April Rackley, won the holiday challenge! She came 22 days in a row!! So amazing. Great work to everyone who spent time with us keeping healthy this holiday season❤️
