The flammulated owl.
The Flammulated Owl can be difficult to locate. The softness of the call, together with the gradual beginning and end make its direction hard to detect. In addition, when the owl detects a person, it sings even more softly, making it sound as if the owl is far away.
Red-spotted Toad from eastern Utah with @rye20jones this summer. These are fairly common to see and this particular little guy was not cooperative, so we didn’t spend much time at all and these were the only shots I could get.
I was very happy to find a pair of Great Horned Owls today, and surrounded by beautiful autumn leaves!
I set out this morning looking for Northern Saw-Whets, and had zero luck. Having run out of time, I headed into work for the day. Twenty two years ago today also happens to be the day that my sweet mother passed away. So after work I headed over to the cemetery to pay her a visit. While there I noticed a falcon making distress calls as it flew around above me. I followed it to a tree where I found the owls. The falcon then abruptly left and I got some quality time with the beautiful pair. There's wildlife all around us, I guess I need to get a falcon that will lead me to all the critters 😝
On a personal note, I'm very grateful for my mother and the wonderful example she was. She had a deep love for nature that she obviously passed on to me. I miss her deeply and am very fond of the memories I have of her taking me on picnics and out into nature while my siblings were at school. I hope I can have the same influence on my son to instill in him that same love of nature.
