#tbt to our 2014 exhibition Winter Solstice!
•
•
The exhibition focused on the annual Winter Solstice on December 21st. It is a time of new growth with a focus on the celestial beings of Sun and Moon in harmony with wildlife and mankind.
•
•
Genesis (Jade) by Susan Point – Serigraph, Edition 21 of 30
•
•
The shape-shifting and duplicity of the Frogs in this print mirrors the chemical process or “Mitosis” from which a microscopic animal cell can divide, transform and multiply itself into two genetically alike cells. Genesis was created as a rare variation edition series whereby each of the 30 prints is a different colour – no two are like.  The one-of-a-kind colours speak to the unique aspect of individual cells.

Volcano Woman Mask by Douglas David – Alder wood, Cedar bark, Acrylic paint
•
•
Volcano Woman is perhaps one of the oldest and most revered legends which tells of a mortal’s fate if he/she does not treat sacred objects or creatures with respect.  In defense of her beloved wild creatures, she controls the powerful volcanoes. This story tells of how the killing of a frog leads the Volcano woman to destroy an entire Haida village.

Dilucidación Barroca
(Baroque Elucidation)
Series of sculptures
Ongoing project since 2013

Dilucidación Barroca is an art project that aims to understand the physical intertwined structure and the activity of oppression inherent in the baroque as exemplified in the façades, atriums and interior designs of cathedrals and churches during colonial Mexico. Using wood waste, Dilucidación Barroca is a sculptural construction to position the pristine baroque design developed during the Mexican colony, in juxtaposition with the rough edges of wood waste in my sculptures. The goal is to unravel and identify the ideology behind baroque imagery while critically looking at Mexican history and culture and its impact on contemporary society. Also, the sculptures represent an allegory of wasted wood in reference to the remains of Hernán Cortés’ sunken ships on the Mexican coast and used to fabricate brigantines to invade Mexico-Tenochtitlan.

In this exhibition, every sculpture was carefully selected to best demonstrate each regional style from the Keewatin and the artist's own evolutionary journey.

Dancing Bear by Padlaya Qiatsuq – Serpentine
•
In Inuit culture, the Dancing Bear is a dramatic and emotionally charged image exhibiting strength and uncanny human behavior, hence displaying the connection between humans and animals. They portray a shaman fully transformed into the Bear spirit by way of the traditional drum dance. These sculptures are also considered renderings of the Bear’s “dancing” motions as they play and swim underwater.

Definiciones (Definitions)
Curated by @toby.k.lawrence
The LAB Gallery at @artgalleryvic in 2015

Text by Toby Lawrence:
Language is imbued with social, cultural, and political biases. With Definiciones (Definitions), Carlos Colín explores the impact, limits, and ruptures of language in our everyday lives, and the ways in which language shapes our thinking about life, social structures, race, culture, geography, politics, and art. As a Mexican artist working in a Canadian context, this project presents a series of definitions in English and in Spanish to generate dialogue around human rights and established power structures by questioning what a democracy means, or a society means, and how we can reclaim language that is inherently colonial.

Happy New Year from the Coastal Peoples Gallery!
•
•
The New Year is an important time for rejuvenation and starting fresh. For Pacific Northwest Coast peoples, the salmon serves as a powerful symbol of regeneration, self-sacrifice, and perseverance. They believed that salmon were people with eternal life who lived in a large house far under the ocean. In spring, they put on their salmon disguises and offered themselves to humans as food.  When entire fish skeletons were returned to the sea, the spirits would rise again and change into salmon people. In this way, the cycle could begin again the following year.

Looking for the perfect gift? There’s still time to get a beautiful pendant or set of earrings this holiday season. Both the Raven and Killerwhale are important creatures to the coastal First Nations peoples. He is also known as the Trickster because of his wit and sense of humor. The Killerwhale is an important crest symbol, associated with power, strength, dignity and communication.
