It is hard to drive in Iceland - the landscapes and views are so amazing everywhere that I had to continually remind myself to keep my eyes on the road and not around it. Just like here on Route One between Hofn and Stokksnes.
Land of Myths
Iceland is a place of rich folklore and abounds in many ancients myths and Viking tales. Most of the Viking mythology was written down in Old Norse language in Iceland to be preserved and passed onto future generations. It is hard not to feel the power of these myths when one is confronted with rugged and surreal Icelandic landscape. Stokksnes is one place that made me feel the awe of this land. I could lose myself completely in the rugged and dark beauty of Vestrahorn mountains surrounded by the black sand dunes and listening to the sound of the ocean.
"Our mind is like a cloudy sky: in essence clear and pure, but overcast by clouds of delusions. Just as the thickest clouds can disperse, so, too, even the heaviest delusions can be removed from our mind." – Kelsang Gyatso
I found this a fitting quote for my afternoon at Vestrahorn. In the early afternoon, a swarm of clouds came and covered up the mountainscape. Would they dissipate by dusk? I hoped so, as I had just one evening to capture Vestrahorn in all its glory. Luck was on my side, it turned out. Minutes before sunset, the vapors started to retreat, leaving only a few behind to add striking patterns to my photos.
I found the quote doubly fitting because of how it describes the process of making art. Often times, my mind is clouded; I feel like I’m in a fog when editing photos or writing. A sort of creator’s block, if you will. But I have found, that if you just fight through it and keep pushing, the clouds will always disperse.
