Podere Ai Valloni is an amazing estate tucked up on a hill surrounded by their gorgeous vineyards in Boca. I sold the 2001 and it was delivered in November and a few people cracked them open without proper rest and the wines showed not so well.
I find wines from cooler climates made from Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, especially if they are offshoot appellations, like Boca (2 hours north of Barolo), Irancy (1.5 hours north of Côte d’Or) and the like then I rest them for 6-8 weeks after arrival to my storage unit. Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir are finicky like you won’t believe, and throw in regions that are traditionally cooler, though getting warmer now, and these show terribly on arrival. Thierry Richoux in Irancy was first to clue me in to this phenomenon.
Alto Piemonte follows the same rules based on my experience. They have to usually add some Vespolina or Croatina to Nebbiolo to soften it as the acidity can be too high and both those grapes are lower acid, fleshy, darker fruited and can soften up the most insane naked Nebbiolo in its purest form from up here.
Long story short I’ve got some 97 and 94 Boca coming down the pipeline and they are stunning wines. Please open some 2001 and check it out as it is properly rested by now, although 2 more weeks won’t hurt. Keep an eye out for this offer within the next month. Swipe right for a few shots of the gorgeous vineyards of the Podere ai Valloni.

Just released today is a delicious Barbera d'Asti from Piemont Italy. Raised largely in stainless steel with a small portion going to neutral barrel, Lot 591 presents fresh, uplifted aromas of blackberry and black cherry mingled with red clay and peppery floral notes. It's plump and juicy on the palate, which lovingly juxtaposes the dark fruit and earthy clay components of the nose. It's supple across the mid-palate with an elegant, lengthy, fruit-driven finish. http://bit.ly/CHWLot591
