Following decades of public pressure, the untimely deaths of many animals, and new laws banning the practice, the Vancouver Aquarium has finally decided to stop keeping whales and dolphins in captivity! This is a huge victory for these highly intelligent and social creatures who suffer terribly when kept in tiny, species-inappropriate tanks where they are isolated from their family groups and and forced to entertain the public. Bill S-203 (currently at the Senate) would make it illegal all across Canada to keep cetaceans in captivity, and the Vancouver Park Board has already created a bylaw against it, which reflects Canadian’s condemnation of this cruel practice. Let’s celebrate this win for whales and dolphins!
Don't swipe if your squimish. This is believed to be a young dwarf minke or minke that washed up today on the North Shore. These species aren't regulars in the Hauraki Gulf but do appear from time to time. The sharks have had a meal of this one and it is probably too decomposed to determine the cause of death. An interesting find though.
