I just posted 7 images on Facebook, six of my brother-in-law, Red Nose, and one of s load of wood he cut. This is what I wrote on Facebook: “Here are a few images of my brother-in-law, Rudolph Roosevelt, "Red Nose," the oldest of Margie's two younger brothers and the third of 11 siblings. Margie is the oldest. If I recall correctly, I took the first picture of Red Nose by the stove in 1976. I took the last one, of him speaking at the funeral of sister Eleanor Roosevelt in September. My favorite is the one shot from the back as it shows both his since of humor, his pride in being Apache and his defiance, however peaceful of the larger society. Margie is down in Arizona with her family right now. I had planned to leave in the morning but have postponed a bit. When I bought that ticket, the date for his memorial had not yet been set but now it has. His wake will be held on Sunday the 12th, his memorial and burial Monday, the 13th. I can't afford to be gone that long, so I rescheduled to Saturday, the 11th.” This is the first of the seven. The other six will follow, one at a time. #memorial#carrizo#arizona#whitemountainapache

An Apache boy mimics a mural at a recent harvest festival on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. This is part of the ongoing feature doc @gatherfilm I’m shooting with director @mrsanjayr about Native American food sovereignty.
To be honest I was pretty ignorant when it came to the indigenous history in the US....this project has really opened my eyes. I didn’t know that there were ~100 million people indigenous tribes in the lower 48 before colonization and ~5% of of that remain. I was never taught in school and hope this film can provide a little bit of background on what happened but also show the light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lot of tragedy but also many positive stories happening right now with native food in these communities. Follow @renan_ozturk and see these stories unfold the rest of the year.
