Really sad that this Flagstaff icon is closed and up for sale right now. My wife and I had our first date here. this Route 66 icon has served as a museum, a club, a music hall, and a bar over its 86-year history.
Constructed by taxidermist Dean Eldredge in the early 1930s, the former museum is touted as the biggest log cabin in Arizona and once housed upward of 30,000 items from Eldredge’s lifetime collection of stuffed animals, rifles, and Native American artifacts.
The structure—aptly nicknamed “The Zoo” by the local police force due to the rowdy crowd the club attracted—was used as a nightclub, recording studio, and roadhouse through the 1950s until it was resurrected as a country music dance hall by Don and Thorna Scott in 1963.
I’ll never forget this day. My first time driving through this part of the country, and it just cant be conveyed through pictures. -
Patty and I rolled out around 3:30 this morning. Drove straight north through Wyoming- super strong winds, tumbleweeds everywhere, and then a beautiful Rainbow. Also, I haven’t researched it, but I’m guessing this state has more head of cattle than humans. -
Headed east into South Dakota for a super quick stop at Mt. Rushmore. I didn’t expect to be blown away by it...but it was so much smaller than the moves make it look. I mean, we all remember Richie Rich, right? It’s kind of small. Still cool.
Then we headed east on I-90 to Badlands National Park. Holy Crap! I just couldn’t get over how incredible this place was. Around every bend in the road- more marvels. Phew. AND WE SAW RAMS!!!! 😲
I wanted to take a different route home, so as to avoid 7 hours of freeway driving. But the kicker is that my phone was getting zero reception. So after I left the visitors center WiFi, I was on my own in the case of rerouting. The last picture is from the gravel road google maps had me turn on, then said go 30 miles. Well, gravel turned to dirt/mud, and then- I WAS DRIVING IN A FIELD! Thankfully after a quick backtrack, I was able to flag someone down...and he just happened to be an off duty Ogalala Souix Tribe law enforcement officer. He helped me find the actual road (which had just been built) and we were on our way home.
And this is why @soyy.sauce is my best friend ⚡️ He's the Doc Holliday to my Wyatt Earp; I'm the Huckleberry Finn to his Tom Sawyer.
Can't wait to see what misadventures the future has in store for us. Miss you brotha man. Oh, & sorry for revealing to the world that you're actually a nice person.
