"On that day I had no hat to keep my head out of the sun. Instead I had an old sweat rag hanging over my shoulder. We were made to march past the Japanese on the way into the camp, and one of the officers kept looking at me. I said to my mate, "what's his problem?". Then the Jap walked over and pulled me out. It turned out hanging anything over your shoulders was seen as disrespectful. He lifted up his rifle and hit me as hard as he could on my arm with the metal end of it. He hit me over and over again. It seemed like it would never stop, but I just had to take it. You couldn't fight back. I had to stay on my feet, I knew if I'd fallen to the ground he would have kicked me to death. I'd seen it happen before".

Stalin's Sledgehammer was the menace of fortifications and buildings alike, but with a downside, it was very heavy, not ideal for mobile warfare. It could reach 9mph on the road, but when you are there, the enemy is going to get a very nasty surprise.

The calibre was 203mm, with a 100kg HE shell. The gun had a hydro pneumatic system for recoil. Its shells would take 29 seconds to reach the maximum range of 18 kilometres. For those too lazy to math that's 607m per second. It's large calibre dictated that the rate of fire was at best 1 round a minute. Was the gun mobile on the spg?

Well the gun had virtually no depression possible but a decent 60° elevation. It's horizontal traverse wasn't good, only reaching 4 degrees from the centre. The calibre was also 25 long, so I don't think it would have been the most accurate weapon.

There was a version that had this gun mounted on the kv1 chassis called S-51. Whenever the gun fired the crew went all around the place.

⚡️FOR SALE⚡️ For soldiers during World Wars I & II, exchanging letters and mementos kept them connected with the homefront and strengthened bonds with friends and loved ones back in the States. Many of the sentimental items that were sent home from servicemen are referred to as “sweetheart” collectibles now.
The tradition of sending home keepsake items actually started during World War I when the strain of the Great War made keeping in touch with the folks back home seem even more important.

The sweetheart custom continued when the U.S. faced more formidable opponents during World War II. One of the favorite ways to show patriotism and feel close to those serving our country was expressed through wearing a special piece of jewelry reflecting the branch of service a sweetheart, son or brother was representing. One of the most popular forms of jewelry was the sweetheart bracelet.

“The Cross Was Not Heavy Enough”. That’s what the caption says, but I don’t fully understand the meaning of this famous print published by devout German anti-Nazi John Heartfield in 1934. In it, a Nazi party official is attaching planks to Jesus’ Crucifix, transforming it into a swastika. Does this simply suggest that Hitler is persecuting Christians, or is there an anti-religious message here also? Comments/opinions welcome. Hoping nobody reports this. 🙄

How much does love be free or die really mean to you? Would you fight when people are burning to death? Would you fight knowing that your children are going to be massacred? That's a tough call. At what point to you fight for inalienable rights? Have they been too eroded? Are we too pampered, entertained and comfortable to notice? Repost @quick.history with @get_repost

On this day in history, January 18th 1943, the first uprising of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto occurs. These conflicts would culminate in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April 1943, the largest uprising of Jews anywhere in Europe during the Second World War. This specific conflict began during the second deportation of Warsaw Jews to Treblinka. As officials collected the deportees, many refused to surrender and fought back with smuggled-in firearms and whatever weapons they could make. Firefights like this occurred frequently until April 19th when the SS decided that they would complete the deportation once and for all, in three days or less. Entering the Ghetto, they were ambushed with Molotov Cocktails, gunfire, hand grenades, and petrol bombs. The Germans pushed through the Ghetto for days, being harassed in the same manner. Often, instead of attempting to gather the Jews and deport them, many were eliminated on the spot or burned alive in their homes, basements, and sewers with flamethrowers, fire bottles, and explosives. The last resistance fell on June 5th. About 13,000 Jews were killed and more than 50,000 were captured and deported. Surviving fighters say that they knew they had no chance of winning, but that they fought to defend their honor and to speak out against the silence of Europe concerning their persecution. #warsaw #poland #worldwartwo

Then and ”now”. Sylvester Stadler (1910-1995), officer in the 2nd SS Panzer Division ”Das Reich”. While Stadler was the commander of Panzer-Grenadier regiment ”Der Führer” (part of the SS Division ”Das Reich”), a subordinate unit under his command committed the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre. 642 inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred on 10 June 1944. Stadler ordered a court martial for Adolf Diekmann (the man who commanded the unit), but he was killed in action in Normandy before he could face trial. Only one man; Heinz Barth, was sentenced for the massacre in 1983 and was released in 1997. #wwii #ww2 #worldwarii #worldwar2 #worldwar #war #worldwartwo #military #history #thenandnow #historic #historical #historia #historynerd #oradoursurglane #france #massacre

January 1945

Gunthergrube

The prisoners of this sub-camp had to work as normal just as they did every morning. They had to prepare themselves to be evacuated in the evening. 20 of them who were sick were loaded onto a truck and taken to the Furstengrube sub-camp where they were killed.

560 prisoners were marched out of Gunthergrube at ten o'clock in the evening. They joined the columns of the marching prisoners from Auschwitz III-Monowitz on 19th January 1945 in the village of Mikołów. Everybody who could not walk anymore was executed in that village.

They reached Gliwice in the evening, and they were forced to spend two nights in that sub-camp, without any food or water. On 21st January they were loaded onto open freight cars and taken away.

The train would stop all the time, so they drove just a few kilommeters. The cars were filled with the dead bodies at this point as a lot of prisoners died due to the lack of food and cold. The train stopped on 22nd January 1945 by Rzędówka station.
SS Kurpanik ordered the prisoners to get rid of the bodies. Then everybody else was gathered together and taken to the nearby forest. Some of the prisoners tried to escape. 331 of them were shot as a result. The fate of the remaining prisoners is unknown.
In the picture you can see a monument dedicated to the Auschwitz prisoners killed during the Death March in Mokre by Mikołów. It was erected due to the initiative of the local people. Check the comments for the translation. The pic is the courtesy of the National Archives.

If you ever wondered how Soviet union managed to storm Berlin, here is your answer. The Russian Bear is a widespread symbol for Russia, used since as early as the 16th century which symbolizes the raw strength of Russia. 🐻

Ever wonder how the hell an M1907 sling goes on a rifle? Here's how, with pictures!

1) the forward portion of the sling is on the left. It has a free end and one buckle. On the right is the aft portion. The aft portion has a buckle on one end and a ring on the other. The two leather keepers are used for the forward portion.
2) thread the aft portion through the rear sling swivel. The buckle should have the prongs facing the bottom of the rifle and the ring should be between the buckle and rifle.
3) thread one leather keeper onto the forward portion, then thread it through the aft portion. The hooks should be facing the rifle and the free end should be between the hooks and rifle.
4) thread the other leather keeper onto the free end, then the free end through the front swivel.
5) take the forward portion's free end and run it back. The forward portion hooks into this, and the aft portion hooks into the forward portion behind its hooks.
And that's it! Actually using this thing is kind of a mess, but now you know how to make it look good, at least!

Operation Torch (1942).
-
Operation Torch, a codename that was given to and Allied invasion of French North Africa in November 1942 which was the first operation that the British and Americans worked jointly together on the plans of the invasion. Josef Stalin had pressed the Western Allies to open a new front against the Germans in Europe but at the time the British didn't think that they would be able to attack Germany directly from France but the victory at an Egyptian town, El Alamein in Egypt was a great encouragement for the Allies to commence an attack on the Axis in North Africa. The Operation continued even some of American military commanders were confident about the successful landing on France to attack Germany. From North Africa, the plan was to invade Sicily and then, the mainland of Italy which would help clearing the Axis forces in the Mediterranean Sea. The Allies planned to invade Morocco and Algeria which at the time were under the Vichy France who had been seen to collaborate with the Germans. The Allies hoped that the French wouldn't resist the Allied landings on three sites - Casablanca (Morocco), Oran (Algeria) and Algiers (Algeria). Operation Torch began on November 8 with 35,000 troops landed at Safi bear Casablanca, 20,000 troops at Algiers and 18,500 troops at Oran. The Allies didn't launch any bombardments as they hoped that the French would not resist the landing. However, the French coastal batteries fired at Allied ships but Allied naval gunfire retaliated. Carrier-based aircrafts also needed for unexpected French resistance o the landings. One problem occurred at Allied landing at Oran as the water was too shallow, damaging the landing crafts and this mistake was taken to consideration in planning of D-Day in June 1944. There were some French naval resistance at Oran but eventually retaliated by the Allies. 🔰Continuation in the comment.🔰

Being heavily outnumbered and having almost no fortifications whatsoever on the northern side of the Lake Ladoga, the Finns formed certain guerilla units during the Winter War. One of those was the 1st Company of the Separate Battalion 10.
.
In December 1939 it was ordered to secure the right flank of the Task Force Pajari. E.g. on the 6th of January 1940 one Platoon, commanded by 2nd Lt Salmela, neutralized a Soviet column on the Kivijärvi-Papero road. In some ten minutes the fight was over. The 30-men enemy formation lost 29 men and 24 horses.
.
At the time the Soviets had noticed that their regular field army units were totally useless when engaged by the Finnish guerillas, so they decided to use elite recon units in counter actions. After that the Finns started to have losses, like the 2nd and 4th Platoons of the Battalion on the 11th, when they encircled a 37-men enemy unit. Finnish losses were four fallen, Soviet's 37.

January 1945

Gleiwitz I

Before the prisoners were evacuated, the camp administration ordered a selection. As a result a couple of dozen prisoners were chosen - most of them were sick, couldn't walk and they were emaciated. The SS-men took them behind the barracks and executed all of them.
The rest of the prisoners were told everybody who will not keep up with the pace of the march will be executed. Each of the prisoners leaving the camp was given a loaf of bread. Some of them had to pull the carts filled with the luggage of the SS-men escorting them and everybody who fell behind the marching column got killed. The SS-men would take them to the surrounding forests and shot them there.

After three days of march and two nights spent in extremely harsh conditions (sleeping in the overcrowded barns without any blankets, food or water), the prisoners arrived to Blechhammer sub-camp which itself was being evacuated too. Some of the Gleiwitz I prisoners decided to hide in the camp to make sure they would not be forced to walk any further.

Many of them were killed when the SS-men decided to spontaneously shoot in the Prisoners' Barracks.

In the photo, the original building of the Wagenwerk where prisoners from Gleiwitz I worked. Photo by ASG 2012.

During the Battle of Britain, Luftwaffe bombers tried to destroy British air power ahead of a planned invasion of the UK. When that failed, Hitler resorted to terror attacks on civilians, including the full-scale bombing of London and other English towns. The attacks killed tens of thousands of people, but "The Blitz" failed: the invasion never took place.

A Sherman Firefly of the 22nd Armoured Brigade, 7th Armoured Division comes ashore from HMS LST-406 (Landing Ship Tank), Gold area, Normandy. June 7th, 1944.

22nd Armoured Brigade started landing on the evening of 6th June (D-Day itself) the entire brigade was not ashore until the evening of 7th June. They started to assemble behind their old friends from the Desert, the 50th Division. The Queen's Brigade did not complete their arrival until 12th June, due to the great storm causing problems with landing on the beaches or via the Mulberry harbours.
By then 5th RTR had already assisted 56th Brigade in the close bocage countryside. One tank commander actually had to fight off German infantry who had jumped onto the top of his tank from the high banks. This was something that had never happened in the desert!

The area of Normandy the Division was to start fighting in as the Calvados region, south of the Bay of the Seine. It could be divided into to parts. The open campagne area south and south east of Caen, with rolling fairly open country side and the close bocage area to the south and south west of Bayeux. In 1944 this bocage was a maze of small, high-banked fields, thick copses and woods, narrow lanes and steep sided valleys. Visibility was usually no more than 50 yards. This was not ideal tank country as the Germans could easily lay in wait and ambush the armour with their Panzerfaust infantry anti-tank weapons.

On 10th June 22nd Armoured Brigade, 5th RHA, along with 8th Hussars and some Queen's infantry were ordered to advance on Tilly-Sur-Seulles, with 4th CLY in the lead. The enemy was first encountered at a small hamlet called Jerusalem, where a Panzer IV was knocked out by 4th CLY, before advancing onto Buceels, but the infantry sustained a number of casualties and the advance stopped there for a while. #war #ww2 #worldwar #worldwar2 #worldwar2 #worldwartwo #crew #tank #tanks #firefly #sherman #troops #fighting #normandy

In September 1939, Britain entered the Second World War. During the war, many of the children were evacuated to avoid aerial bombings from the Germans. Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret stayed at Balmoral Castle, Scotland until Christmas of 1939, when they moved to Sandringham House, Norfolk. From February to May 1940, they lived at Royal Lodge, Windsor until they moved to Windsor Castle. In 1940, 14-year-old Elizabeth made her first radio broadcast during the BBC's Children's Hour, addressing other children who had been evacuated from the cities. "We know, everyone of us, that in the end all will be well; for God will care for us and give us victory and peace. And when peace comes, remember it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place." -Princess Elizabeth-

January 1945

Gleiwitz II

The prisoners were ordered to prepare for the evacuation of the sub-camp. Due to the intervention of the head of the Gassruswerke Schenk, they were given some additional clothing. Everybody was given a blanket and a loaf of bread. The column of the prisoners was heavily guarded. The head of the SS-men was SS-Hauptscharfuhrer Bernard Rakers.
When the prisoners walked 20km, they were put in a barn. Three of the were executed in it on the next day, as they could not walk anymore.
The Soviet Army was quickly approaching Gliwice, so they had to stop in the subburbs of the town, then they were marched to the railway station and loaded onto freight cars. They were to be transported to Oranineburg and KL Sachsenhausen, and the women to Ravensbruck. Some of the women were able to escape.
In the picture you can see SS-Hauptscharfuhrer Bernard Rakers. The pic is the courtesy of the USHMM.

January 1945

18th January 1945

Janinagrube

800 prisoners of the Janinagrube sub-camp were forced to march to KL Gross-Rosen. They were not given any clothes to keep them from getting cold. The journey lasted 18 days and they were given just small rations of food. Only 200 of them made it to Gross-Rosen and they were all in a very bad condition.

Bismarckhutte

The prisoners of this sub-camp were led out of it, wearing only stripped uniforms, wooden clogs and some of them were even barefoot. They had to pull platforms which were filled with the things that belonged to the SS-men. The head of the evacuation from this sub-camp was SS-Oberscharfuhrer Klemann.

Golleschau

A couple of hundreds of prisoners were marched out of the Golleschau sub-camp. Another column - consisting of a couple of hundred people - was formed on the following day. They had to walk to Wodzisław Śląski, where they were loaded onto freight cars and transported to Sachsenhausen and Flossenburg. More than half of them perished on the way.

100 prisoners who could not walk were left behind in the camp without any food or water.

Tschechowitz

450 prisoners were marched out of this sub-camp at around 7 o'clock in the evening. They reached Wodzisław Ślaski on 20th January 1945. Everybody who could not keep with the pace of march was executed. When they arrived to Wodzisław Śląski, they saw thousands of other Auschwitz prisoners waiting to be transported somehwehere. The Tschechowitz prisoners were taken to Buchenwald in the railway cars filled with snow. Only 300 of them were alive at this point.

The sick and the weak were left in the camp, lying in between the bodies of dead prisoners.

In the photo, you can see the train station of Wodzisław Śląski, where the original rail tracks were still there as of 2015. Photo by ASG.
