In South Africa, “now” means sometime in the near future. “Now now” means even sooner.
And when an editor (anywhere in the world) asks why your story is important *now,* they mean when the piece will be published and read. That could be tomorrow, in three months, or a year.
Anticipating this aspect of your story has a big impact on if you’ll get the assignment now or not.
If that editor can choose between two stories that are otherwise equal, the one with urgency will win out over the one with a long shelf life. That’s true at the pitching/assignment stage, when it comes time to publish, and even with what readers themselves choose to read.
Breaking news is the most extreme. The vast majority of people will read about a breaking news story right after it happens—not three months later.
Many freelance writers struggle with this. I’m no exception.
Usually when I’ve left a news hook out of a pitch, it was because I couldn’t come up with one easily, and hoped for the best. After all, there are evergreen stories out there. I’ve read and sold a few myself. Maybe you have too.
I’ve tried slapping on a thin hook, which sometimes does the trick. And I’ve had some evergreen ideas linger in my ideas folder for a long time, and eventually a news item would come up that was a good fit, making it salable. (That’s a whole other story I’ll tell you soon.)
But I started to wonder about speeding up the process to improve my pitch acceptance rate.
What would happen if I started with the news, rather than adding it on?
As it turns out, using current events to spark feature ideas is a twofer. You get an idea that hasn’t been done to death, plus an integral answer to that timeless question, Why now?
Basically, instead of grasping around for a news hook or settling for one that’s a bit of a stretch, it’s the first thing you consider.
It’s easier to explain what I’m talking about with some examples, so if you’re interested, check out the (new) video on the blog (now): www.rebeccalweber.com/mjt19
I am gonna start writing soon. I have the soul and passion of a writer. My thoughts have been organized in journals or documents since I was ten (33 years) The mother of my children inspired me to pursue that. Writers need life experience to show readers depth of human emotion, character types, the details of many places and personalities we have experienced. Memoirs is what I want to write. Real accounts of a strange journey. I think to give hope to the hopeless is a good intention in writing ... I'm weary folks. Real talk....I said when I let my flat go in the US I had 2 moves left. This time on the hillside of an organic farm in Norway away from my tribe was a spiritual stop gap to prevent something neither of us seem to want (letting go). T shirts are my only income and because of remote living it's not allowed net access or time to nurture it, but "seeing things as they are" has no price tag. 30 days have nearly passed since the ocean days after splitting off my wife and kids to "breathe" Well, the rest is private right now...BUT I Hit "pause" to have no regrets and cancelled a ticket home (I take calculated risks based on thought and I trust my gut) So I'm spiritually rich, down to the few possessions I need, and facing a pragmatic and logistical dilemma. I have been on a silent mission for the most part to respect a delicate phase of life. So most friends and even most family aren't sure what's going on. Again, respecting all involved kept me from doing my passion, writing about life. I am an optimist. I am a great dad. A great teammate. "Know your name, go your own way." My t shirts are sweat shop free and symbols of this journey “Trust the Process” “Prove them Wrong” “Look for the Helpers” “Starve the War. Feed the Revolution. “Be happy. Be you. Got an organization or personal mantra? I'll make one today for you 💪🏻 This clothing Project is from the heart. We can't see the world with the same emotions and logic at the same time. We always have our own opinion but we push those opinions down so we fit into the "society". Society is made by us, they can't exist if you don't. Do not value the society above your opinions or dreams.
There will always be someone who will ask you not to say things you feel are right just so you're accepted but why would you want to be a part of a group of people who do not value you and your talents?
Respect yourself and your opinions. Choose your own world or make one for yourself, as you always have a choice in a free world.
