On Sunday, November 26, the Center’s Museum Shop will be one of over 600 stores offering an inspired #shopping experience as part of Museum Store Sunday (@museumstoresunday). Enjoy 10 percent off all purchases (register for free membership and receive an additional 10 percent off) from noon to 5 pm. Refreshments will be served.
.
The Center welcomes you, your family, and your community, to “Be A Patron” at your favorite public art museum and #store this weekend. Holiday #shoppers will not only find unique British-themed #gifts that include exhibition-related #merchandise and publications, but through their purchases, will underline their support of the Center.
.
While there is only one #MuseumStoreSunday each year, this campaign also encourages you to “Be A Patron” of cultural organizations and #museum stores year-round. You are a patron by simply bringing your friends and family to a museum locally or abroad. You are a patron by shopping for gifts for birthdays, life events, or other celebrations from that organization’s store. You are a patron by becoming a member of your favorite institution. You are a patron by attending cultural programs and by volunteering. However you choose to be a patron, the Center thanks you!

In his charming biography of Horace Walpole, R. W. Ketton Cremer makes the point that “one of the difficulties which confront a biographer of #Walpole is his remarkable versatility. He was active in many fields—in politics, social life, literature, architecture, antiquarianism, printing, virtú; and it is not easy to include them all in the compass of a single volume.” George Haggerty (Distinguished Professor and Chair, Department of English, University of California, Riverside) is currently writing a new #biography of #HoraceWalpole. He will take up this challenge in his #lecture with and through Walpole’s letters. Haggerty asserts that Walpole writes himself into his experience by means of his epistolary imagination.

Apropos my last post, here is the same piece about a year ago, as photographed by Ben Boswell. The Yale Centre for British Art wanted a 'studio portrait' for the #thingsofbeautygrowing exhibition catalogue. This morning I went through Ben's shots and couldn't help but notice my current headache, which is about to be subjected to its fifth firing, recorded there in its unadulterated state.
.

The exhibition is on until December.

V-Beam Earrings⠀
⠀
Announcing a collaboration between the Yale Center for British Art (@yalebritishart) and Pico Design. The Moth & Butterfly Collection is a celebration of the Center's exceptional building, designed by Louis I. Kahn to house the collection of British art gifted to Yale University (@yale) by founder Paul Mellon (Yale College, Class of 1929). ⠀
*⠀
These V-Beam Earrings recall the architectural structure of the Center, evident while exploring the fourth-floor galleries and two interior courtyards. A visitor must only look up to observe concrete formed into this shape. The V-Beams simultaneously support the roof, and in addition to the skylights, gently direct light throughout the building.⠀
*⠀
"On a gray day it will look like a moth. On a sunny day, like a butterfly," #Kahn said of the museum—referring to a palette of materials unified aesthetically, but varied in opacity, finish, and color.⠀
*⠀
The capsule collection includes seven pieces of jewelry that draw inspiration from the architectural materials comprising Kahn’s building. This selection will be available beginning mid-October through Pico Design's website or at the Center’s Museum Shop, located on the corner of Chapel and High Streets in New Haven, Connecticut.⠀

Friday, October 6, 5 pm—Film Screening and Discussion | "African and British Legacies in American Ceramics: Ladi Kwali and Michael Cardew"
.
Join celebrated studio potter Mark Hewitt (a former apprentice to legendary #Britishpotter Michael Cardew) and art historian and potter Sequoia Miller (PhD candidate, History of Art, Yale University @yale) for an evening of #discussion that will be followed by the #screening of two documentary #films from the 1970s about Ladi Kwali and Michael Cardew.
.
Films:
“Ladi Kwali” (1971, 12 minutes): Shot on location at #AbujaPottery, Nigeria, in 1959, the #film features Michael Cardew and looks at the work produced at the pottery training center that he set up in 1958. The film also shows a demonstration of basic potting techniques by Ladi Kwali, a #potter from the Gwari region in Northern Nigeria and one of Cardew’s students. Kwali was the first female potter to join the pottery training center in Abuja and went on to become Nigeria’s best-known potter.
.
“Mud and Water Man” (1973, 50 minutes): The life of the #Englishpotter Michael Cardew is told in his own words. The #film begins by exploring his work in England before tracing his experiences in West Africa, where for the next thirty years he undertook a series of unique projects that attempted to give the surviving traditions of #Africanpottery a viable twentieth-century form. Directed by Alister Hallum.

What is the role of the #artist in shifting our perceptions, shattering biases, and creating the world we want? More than ever, we are inundated with images. Awash in them. I've recently had the pleasure of learning about XRF imaging from my colleagues in painting conservation. For anyone interested, here is a short description of XRF capabilities:
Macro X-ray Fluorescence, or MA-XRF, is a non-destructive analytical tool that creates an image map of the atomic elements present on an object. When applied to paintings, MA-XRF provides conservators and art historians with a visual representation of the chemical composition of the pigments used, and may also reveal obscured paint layers that provide insight into an artist's technique.

Today’s Windham-Campbell Prizes (@windhamcampbell) program series hosted by the Center:
.
"Close Looking Session: Marina Carr on William Blake," 1:30 pm
.
Marina Carr is a singular voice in world theater. The #author of more than a dozen critically acclaimed plays, she came to international attention with "The Mai" (1994), the first in a trilogy of plays inspired by the works of Euripides and Sophocles. Carr’s persistent focus in both the “Midland Trilogy” and her other work is female experience in its most mythic and paradoxical aspects: the power and vulnerability it embodies, the desire and disgust it provokes. Carr will discuss work by one of her favorite artists, #WilliamBlake. (Meet in the third-floor galleries).
.
Panel Discussion | "Never a Solo Voice: Community, Indigeneity, and Artmaking," 4 pm
.
Join panelists Ali Cobby Eckermann, Aboriginal poet, and Natalie Ball, artist, for this talk, which is co-sponsored by the Windham-Campbell Prizes at Yale; the Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration (@yaleritm); the Native American Cultural Center; and the Yale Center for British Art. (Meet in the Lecture Hall).

.
The Center presents the first major survey of British studio pottery ever organized in the United States. Bringing together nearly 150 ceramic objects—including #vases, #bowls, #chargers, and monumental forms, as well as a range of historic works from China, Japan, and Korea—“'Things of Beauty Growing': British Studio Pottery" traces the evolution of the #vessel form, which has defined the #ceramic medium from the turn of the twentieth century to the present. This #exhibition demonstrates that the story of studio #pottery is a global one—as these #pots and #potters have traveled between England, continental Europe, Asia, Africa, and beyond. It also underlines that studio pottery is an ongoing practice, and the display includes works created especially for the occasion by contemporary makers, as well as drawing from distinguished private and public collections in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Now on view in the second-floor galleries and throughout the Center—“'Things of Beauty Growing': British Studio Pottery."
.
This exhibition tells the story of studio pottery in Britain, from the early twentieth century to the present, by focusing on the evolution of the vessel form. #Vase, #bowl, #charger, #set: this family of forms ties ceramics to its functional origins. A #vessel exists to hold or contain—a purpose it may fulfill literally, metaphorically, or both. The antiquity of the vessel, the familiarity of its shapes and forms, provides a ready-made language, which #ceramic artists have for decades invoked and emulated but also transformed and renewed. The #exhibition traces the major typologies that have defined studio #pottery since the beginning of the twentieth century while also looking back to the historic precedents that inspired modern pioneer #potters.
