DAY 2 of #hathahotties (I feel a little silly writing that), but super happy I joined this yoga challenge because I had some serious motivation to do yoga after a long day at work. Tomorrow is a 24 hour shift in the peds ICU - day 7/7. It’s been a tough week....some weeks you can handle the pain and loss, and others it just seems more difficult. And this week it’s hard. I don’t know why...but it doesn’t matter why. What matters is I can feel the feelings and share. That is something I had no ability to do before I found yoga three years ago. I felt like I was loosing myself in my first year of peds critical care fellowship...one child would die, and I wouldn’t have a minute to process before going on to try to save the next. I bottled everything up and pretended like everything was fine. And then I found yoga, or yoga found me. And it gave me the ability to sit still again. It gave me the ability to start to feel again. And it gave me the ability to cope. For that, I am thankful. One of my favorite sayings about yoga is that we start right where we left off in our last life. This makes sense to me, because even in the beginning when I had no flexibility, no knowledge of yoga, and no physical ability to do many poses - it felt like I was home when I practiced...and that feeling hasn’t left me three years later. .
Day 6/80 👊💥💪🤘 Week one is DONE!! Tomorrow is a rest/self care day! And I am so glad I pushed through every exercise everyday. 👊🙆♀️ I am one to make excuses.. And I mean any and every excuse I could use it BUT I am NOT letting that happen. I have commited to this program and I am trusting the process completley! I am putting all excuses aside and committing to myself because I want to be at my healthiest and strongest. 💪🤘 So now I am saying, "bring it on week 2!!" 😉

This seemingly simple pose has so many moving parts and I find I am continuously working on and focusing on various elements of it. (I will post a video tomorrow.) The first thing you want to do is to set up the proper position of your hands arms and shoulders.
1️⃣Come to all fours. Hands should be your shoulder distance apart or a little wider if you feel any pinching in the shoulder joint.
Spread your fingers with your index finger facing straight ahead. Keeping your arms straight, bend your knees and lift your hips up and back. If you have tight hammies bend your knees but keep the length in your spine.
2️⃣Keep the L-Shape of your index finger and thumb firmly down on the mat. Squeeze or draw your forearms toward each other and spread your shoulder blades away from each other. Press the mat actively away with your hands, reaching your sitting bones up and back. Bring a slight internal rotation to your thighs, like you’re squeezing a block between your inner thighs. If your heels don’t touch just keep activating the legs and eventually the heels will reach.
3️⃣Bring a slight tuck of your chin towards your chest and gaze to your navel or maybe the upper thighs. Activate the legs as much as possible as this will help bring weight out of the shoulders. .
If anything pulls in the lower back step the feet a little wider than hip distance. .
For some your legs may never straighten completely but keep focusing on the length in your spine. .
In Ashtanga, we tend to shorten the distance between the hands and feet and round the upper back a bit more to activate the energetic locks or bandhas. Play around with the distance to see what feel best!! Hosts: @yogainchicago @karlatafra @lightfulyogini

"This is the best day ever mom". It makes me happy when I get 1 on 1 time with my kids. It's good for me and them when they get my complete attention for a bit. We went to a yoga class taught by the amazing Amy with @yoga_assets and Jace won an awesome towel from @granogi. Jace loved it and we even got a good giggle in when a lady had gas in Jace's face😂
It's always a great day in the red rocks.
PS I wore our new boyfriend sweater and I'm in love, the softest thing ever!
By the time I finish my yoga practice I am always starving! Am I the only one?! I’m currently obsessed with these yummy whey protein smoothies from @feelingupbeat to satisfy my cravings!
