Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves, even when we risk disappointing others. The crazy thing, is that I had a conversation about this with my daughter today but it rings so true in my personal life as well. I was never aware of the art of balancing respect for myself and doing things for others when I was a kid but I’m happy to be developing those tools now, even if it’s at the same time as my daughter! 🤣 please share any stories or experiences you have with this ❤️🙏😘 ps...can’t wait to share the next set of holiday pics with you by @actionhiro wearing @aloyoga

Sitting at a desk all day, or crouching over a computer, laptop or phone is bound to create stiffness around the shoulders and upper back. This stiffness, over time, can limit mobility around the spine and arms.

Shoulder opening poses help to create the reverse action by creating space in the shoulders, chest and upper back. Shoulder stretches counters those movements and promotes mobility around the area (allowing a wider range of movement) if done together with the opening poses.

Do use a towel if you can’t grab your opposite hand/fingers. You could also use a block or pillow to support the head (to keep the neck relaxed) in any of the poses where the head is facing there floor.

In each pose, stay for at least 10-15 slow breathes. Try starting with 5 counts for an inhalation, and 5 counts for an exhalation. And slowly increase the length of the exhalation with each breathe for a deeper release. Make sure to work both sides evenly.

Above all, respect the space and limits in your body. Breathe through any discomfort, but if you experience any pain, please back off from the pose.

Reaching the fingers or palms to the ground is often considered a flexibility milestone, a way to measure how bendy we are. When I was a kid, one year in gym class, our teacher made us work, for the whole semester, on touching the floor with the palms and counting to 5 once we were there. I practiced it sooo much and, when the exam day came, I planted the hands down, counted quickly 1,2,3,4  but, before reaching 5, my hips have tilted so far over the heels, that I fell and, literally, rolled over. My whole body ached for days (both from the fall and the effort) but I got an A- (the highest I ever scored in gym class) because the teacher was impressed with my dedication… Years later, when I went to my first yoga class and had to try this, all these memories rushed back and I thought ‘if I couldn't fully do it when I was 12, how could it happen now?’ it turned out consistent practice and dedication goes far… at least 3 foam blocks, maybe more. Stories aside, I also couldn't do a comfortable standing fold so, trust me, it can be achieved. One of the many things that could be said about this pose is that, if you pull the navel in and engage the hip flexors, your hamstrings will feel more at ease to surrender and lengthen. As I mentioned a few days ago, there’s an equilibrium of ‘easiness’ (sukha) and ‘steadiness’ (sthira), so this is not just about ‘dumping’ forward, the more active the whole body is, the more well distributed the work load, hence easier the pose for each group of muscles. Modify and remove the blocks or lean against a wall to assist you straightening the legs/spine. Find the fold that works for you, be consistent and you’ll increase that #flexibility very soon. Day 3 of #WonderWomanYogis is forearm balance. Forearm balance is still a challenge for me. I can actually hold the pose for a bit now, but getting in the pose is challenging. This is where the wall is able to assist. I think I kick up to hard?! 🤔 Still working on it. I am soooo close...💃

I always feel uncertain when kicking up into forearm stand. So, I was playing with this split variation in headstand and was able to shift into forearm stand. There are numerous outtakes of my pup walking in front of me and licking my face like crazy! 🤣

Yoga is the cultivation of awareness and non-attachment. .
This morning I sleep-walked into the yoga studio, and after class I completely forgot where my locker was. I was all messy and  in need for a shower, and made it worse by panicking and in the end just sat there and giving up on myself.  Even became cynical on myself - I practiced so much yoga, but still why am I so unaware of my actions and so attached to my stuff?!?!
After I think half an hour of panic attack @yogawithwinnie_c offered me a banana. I ate it and all of a sudden remembered where the locker was!! Thank you my dear @yogawithwinnie_c ❤️ for saving my day. 
Anyone who knows Estelle well won’t be surprised at this incident.  Some close friends would even say, this is very “estelle” in which my name becomes an adjective - forgetful, unaware and daydreaming, especially when I am absorbed in another activity.  I needed to practice non-attachment at an early age as I tend to lose things too easily!!

Everyone is working on something. I am working on this - to be more aware and less attached; to create balance and cultivate non-reactivity. It will be a lifelong journey, but at least I know where I’m heading.  And luckily, along the journey, I am grateful to have amazing peers whom I could lean back on and take advice from. 🙏

#HolidayFitBall Day 13

Tabletop Presses- place ball between thighs and squeeze. Come to all fours (tabletop). As press your hands and toes into floor, lift knees 2 inches off ground. Repeat 5x, then come to down dog and hold for one breath. Repeat 5x

Downdog Hops- keep squeezing ball between thighs. Take a few hops while squeezing ball

One-Hand Push-ups on Ball: place right hand on ball and rep out 10 push-ups. Switch placing left hand on ball to rep out 10 pushups. To modify, place knees down or do without the ball

Repeat Tabletop press - Downdog Hops sequence, this time challenging yourself to hold ball between calves

Repeat One-Handed Push-ups on Ball

Quad Leans- come to stand on knees and place ball between thighs. Lean back, keeping hips lifted and pushing thighs forward while squeezing ball. Do 10x

Camel Pose with Ball- come to camel pose while squeezing ball between thighs 
Child’s Pose- keep ball in place and come to Child’s Pose while resting belly on ball to rest
