This domelike structure is actually calcified rock following a hot spring that's been built up over thousands of years. On the far side the spring comes out into some perfect pools with a view toward the majestic and snowy sierras. I just stopped here for a visit and didn't get to soak much more than my toes, but this is definitely on my bucket list of places to return to.
Hi from the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho! We’re kicking off our weekend @mypubliclands Instagram takeover with a trip through the Bruneau River Canyon! Hidden within a vast high desert plateau are deep canyons carved by the Owyhee, Bruneau and Jarbidge Rivers in a remote area of southwestern Idaho. Nearly 40 miles of Bruneau River's 50-mile total length are designated as wild. Volcanic caves, canyons and spire-like hoo-doos tower hundreds of feet above whitewater rafters in this unique environment of unsurpassed solitude and unique beauty. Sportsmen will find excellent fishing for trout and hunting for upland birds and some big game. In early spring, this area brightens up with beautiful desert flowers contrasted sharply against the dark volcanic rock. The sagebrush plateaus of the Owyhee Uplands provides habitat for over 200 species of wildlife. Soaring eagles and hawks can often be seen flying over the skylines and nesting along the cliff faces here. The ancestors of the Shoshone-Paiute and Shoshone-Bannock people have used these canyonlands for thousands of years for shelter, weaponry, fish and game and water. From placid pools to turbulent whitewater; from vertical cliffs to steep grassy slopes, this area presents visitors with challenging and extraordinary experiences.

Day 2 of our takeover brings us to southern Nevada where four #NPLD17 events are planned! Events take place on Sept. 23 and Sept. 30 near Las Vegas. Gold Butte BackCountry Byway, Logandale Trails, Big Dunes, and Sloan Canyon are all areas that will be getting spiffed up by staff and volunteers from great partners. If you want to take part in cleaning up, installing new signs or trail maintenance, this is a great way to give back to areas you love! >>More #NPLD17 sites in Nevada can be found here http://bit.ly/2y4G8kM 📸: Bob Wick/BLM
Sol Duc Falls #waterfallwednesday I fall into the trap of wanting to take my own photo of the same photo I've seen a thousand times eventhough I'm not a skilled or creative photographer. Thankfully this trap still leads you to some great places and usually none of the photos do them justice.
The "office" today was the BLM's CA Trail Center - gloriously rich with westward settlement history. The things these brave folk faced without Nalgene's, Gore-tex, and motorized travel is astonishing & a testament to their grit. I've now "seen the elephant", a phrase used to encapsulate what couldn't be described about the landscape of the west. #westwardho#yourpubliclands#history
