This enamel plaque shows a centaur out hunting with his dog. Centaurs derive from Classical mythology but were popular in medieval art. In the seventh century AD, Isidore of Seville wrote that the idea of the centaur was based on the horsemen of Thessaly whose skill on horseback was consummate. This cloisonné enamel plaque was made in the Meuse Valley c. 1150-1160, and was once part of a larger ensemble that is now dispersed. This panel is in the Louvre.⠀

King Charles V of France and his queen, Jeanne de Bourbon. This pair of fourteenth-century sculptures probably adorned the east façade of the medieval palace of the Louvre, and offers remarkably individualised portraits of the royal couple. Charles was king from 1364 to 1380 and was known as 'le sage' ('the wise') for his keen interest in intellectual pursuits. Jeanne married Charles (her cousin) in 1350, when they were both 12 years old. When Jeanne fell ill after giving birth in 1372, Charles went on pilgrimage for the sake of her recovery. He appointed her regent of France in the event of his death, but in the end she died two years before him.⠀

This enamel plaque in the Metropolitan Museum of Art shows St John the Evangelist writing his gospel, and was made in Germany c. 1175-1200. With his right hand, John dips his quill in an ink horn and with his left he holds a penknife. On his lap is a narrow book inscribed 'In principio erat verbum' ('In the beginning was the Word'), the opening line of John's gospel.⠀

Christ as the Man of Sorrows, from a psalter made in England c. 1480-1490 and now in the British Library (MS Egerton 1821, f. 8v). This is one of four hand-coloured woodcut prints pasted into the opening pages of the manuscript. Here, the bloodied body of Christ is shown surrounded by the instruments of the Passion: the cross, lance, sponge, hammer and tongs, club and sword among others. Below, time off Purgatory is offered to the worshipful viewer: ‘To all them that devoutly say five Pater nosters, five Aves, and a Creed afore such a figure are granted 32,755 years of pardon.’ At some point the text was struck through, leaving the devotional image but rejecting the Catholic indulgence.⠀⠀

This body of Christ was once part of a large sculptural group depicting the descent from the cross. His left arm remains horizontal and was probably attached to a crucifix, whereas his right arm droops down and was probably supported by one of the figures removing his body from the cross. The wooden figure has been skilfully carved and painted, and once wore a crown that has since been lost. In its format and style, this figure is typical of twelfth-century Romanesque sculpture. It is now in the Louvre.⠀

King Nascien at sea with his family and retinue, from a manuscript of Arthurian romances made in northern France c. 1316 (British Library MS Add. 10292, f. 61). Nascien was said to have come to Britain with Joseph of Arimathea not long after the death of Christ, and to have helped establish Christianity on the island. Nascien lived an exceptionally long time – many hundreds of years – as a hermit, and in King Arthur's time offered warnings and advice to the Knights of the Round Table.⠀

The lid of the 'Royal Gold Cup,' showing the martyrdom of St Agnes. This remarkable solid gold cup is decorated with scenes in 'basse taille' enamel, whereby shallow areas of metal are excavated and then filled in with translucent glass paste. The thinness of the enamel lets the metal below reflect light, giving a luminous effect. The cup was made in Paris c. 1370-1380 on the orders of Jean Duc de Berry as a gift to the king of France. It later entered the possession of the kings of England, and was modified by Henry VIII and later James I. In 1604, James gave the cup as a token of peace to Philip III of Spain. It remained in Spain until 1883, when it returned to Paris to be sold. In 1892, it was bought for the British Museum for the massive sum of £8,000 (almost half a million in today's money). It was the first artwork bought for the nation using public funds, an idea later formalised as the Art Fund.⠀

Elephants take a dip in a stream, from a bestiary made in England early in the 13th century (British Library, MS Royal 12 F XIII, f. 13v). According to medieval bestiary texts, elephants give birth in water and never have more than one child at once. Pliny the Elder wrote that elephants love water but can't swim, don't reach adulthood until the age of 60, and live for two or three hundred years. This bestiary is lavishly illustrated with 55 such miniatures, each accompanied by a description of the animal and its behaviour.⠀

Carlisle Cathedral is the second smallest cathedral in the United Kingdom (after Oxford). The earliest parts of the present building date to 1122, when king Henry I founded the Augustinian priory that was later raised to cathedral status. From 1218, work began to rebuild the choir in the 'Early English' style. It took over 60 years to complete, and burnt down only 12 years later. Over the first half of the fourteenth century, repairs and rebuilding were executed in the 'Decorated' style and it is mainly this material that we see today. The spectacular east window is over 50ft high and retains much of its medieval stained glass in the tracery. There is a wealth of sculpture in the choir, from the Labours of the Months on the capitals to the humorous misericords on the fifteenth-century choir stalls.⠀

A blemmye looks out from the pages of this Anglo-Saxon miscellany in the British Library (Cotton MS Tiberius B V, f. 82). Blemmyes were said to be enormous, headless people with faces in their chests. They are described as early as the 5th century BC by Herodotus, and featured on a number of medieval maps. In his 14th-century 'Travels' John Mandeville mentions the blemmyes he saw in India, and as late as 1595 Walter Raleigh claimed there were blemmyes living in Venezuela. The manuscript contains maps, astrological tables, and a calendar as well as descriptions and illustrations of the 'monstrous races' of the world. It was made in England (perhaps Canterbury) c. 1040.⠀

Saint Louis presides over the veneration of the Crown of Thorns, from the stained glass windows of Paris's Sainte-Chapelle. The Crown of Thorns is visible in the centre panel and is surrounded on all sides by monks and laymen, queens, and – at the top – King Louis IX. Louis acquired the Crown of Thorns in 1239, and built the Sainte-Chapelle in the heart of his royal palace to house it. The vast expanse of stained glass in the chapel (over 650 sq m) survives mostly intact, and is celebrated as one of the greatest medieval stained glass ensembles. This window, in Bay A, tells the story of the Passion relics from the discovery of the True Cross by the emperor Constantine's mother Helena to Louis's acquisition of the Crown of Thorns. The chapel stands as a monument to the wealth and power of the medieval kings of France.⠀

King Croesus of Lydia was said to have been unbelievably rich. Thinking this made him the happiest man to have lived, he met with a series of personal losses including the deaths of his son and his wife before he himself was overthrown and lost both his kingdom and his wealth. Legend has it that when he was set to be burned alive, only a shower of rain saved him – such is the game of fickle fortune. This miniature showing Croesus comes from a manuscript of John Lydgate's 'Fall of Princes' made in England c. 1450-1460 and now in the British Library (MS Harley 1766, f. 133). Lydgate presents the life of Croesus as a cautionary tale against hubris.⠀
