45mls or 1 and 1/2oz @AlaskanRockVodka
30mls or 1oz Pimm’s No.6 vodka cup liqueur
20mls or 2/3oz @thekingsginger liqueur
20mls or 2/3oz mandarin juice
scant pinch of sea salt or a couple drops sea salt solution
several drops @bettersbitters miraculous foamer

Shake/Strain/Up

If you didn’t know or haven’t yet tried Pimm’s No.6 cup - their vodka cup - give it a try. It’s got a terrific floral note and it pairs perfectly with ginger. Add mandarin and our vodka and this 🥃 sings. Cheers all!

Smoke/Swish/Ice

A proper Old Fashioned 🍸needs a brown spirit and should be formed in the glass. Rock is already outside the tradition for this 🥃 but that’s never stopped us before! Bénédictine and Angostura bitters is match made in heaven. Together with Rock they deliver the kind of meaty punch you get from bourbon and whisky. And the smoke is a perfect foil for the slight sweet edge of this recipe. Swish the drink in a container with the smoke and some ice slivers - do this for maybe 30 seconds or even just 20. Not too long or the smoke will overpower the other flavours. Then pour over clear cut ice and enjoy! Shoutout to @cocktailchemistry for teaching us how to smoke a drink and to @alsbarblog for introducing us to this fun Rocktober Instagram concept. Proper chuffed with this recipe. Cheers all!

We are new to the masterful 🇫🇷 liqueurs of Gabriel Boudier of Dijon. The flavour profile of their Coings liqueur (that’s French for quinces) is quince-y with a fairly high level of sweetness and a surprising chocolate note. Adding Lillet tones the sweetness down and adds a complex layer and Rock allows all the flavours to shine. Peaches and limes are the final touch to make this 🥃 a tart, fresh winner. Thanks again to @masterofmalt whose vast catalogue of excellent booze and clever tasting notes hasn’t failed us yet. Cheers all!

Lanique is a terrific liqueur. The flavour profile is quite rosy and sweet but the aroma is a scented rose garden and the colour is a blushing delight! As for the Chase elderflower liqueur what can be said - we’re in love! There is a slight citrus quality to it that delivers a freshness that is a very pleasant surprise and makes it perfect for summery recipes. Add lemon juice, Rock and bitters and you have yourself a complex 🥃 with a sweet fresh edge. Very happy with these new additions to our Rock HQ lab bar. We even tried this recipe swapping out the lemon for mandarin juice and it was equally fantastic. Garnish with fresh raspberries (or strawberries would also work) and enjoy. So happy with this we might have two 😉. Cheers all!

Glassware is a vintage Ingrid Glass Seneca pattern coupe from 1960s 🇩🇪 Germany. We think the stem looks just like 4 garlic cloves. Might have to think up a vodka and garlic recipe ... perhaps with black pepper. Whatever this glass contains it will always look chic. Fabulous glass art. Prost!

Dry Shake/Wet Shake/Strain/Up

The miraculous foamer is actually miraculous 😇 and it doesn’t interfere with the ingredients at all. We love fresh egg whites 🥚 but this stuff is fantastic. Give it a try. You’ll be delighted.
.
*For the shrub crush a fat handful of basil leaves and add a couple pinches of light muscovado sugar and a tablespoon of good white wine vinegar.  Leave the shrub to steep for an hour in the refrigerator then strain well through paper towels pressing to get a tart liquid with a lovely green shade. We didn’t quite get Kerry’s incredible green colour but we’re close. This is a gorgeous shrub mix. It’s quite a mild basil flavour. Very aromatic and fresh.

The combination of Rock + the sweet rum spiciness of the falernum + the tart flavour of the shrub makes this 🥃 complex and delicious but balanced. And the foam is quite dense and perfectly white and it delivers that divine slippery mouth feel to make this drink very decadent indeed. Garnish with a few tiny basil leaves and enjoy! Cheers all!

(Hit the team @masterofmalt - their catalogue of booze and superfast service is awesome.) “Wow" is all we can say about this liqueur! It is a fantastic - not too sweet, gentle tea-like flavour profile and so, so smooth. We’ve paired it with an amazing green strawberry bitters from the Ms Better’s Bitters team (an intense fruity flavour) and together they join Rock and soda water for a 🥃 so good it’s perfect for spring and summer. Fresh, balanced but with a kick. Serve in a glass with lots of clear ice and a chevron straw. Easier than a Long Island Iced Tea but just as effective 😉 Cheers all!

{Shady Ruby Farm}

45mls or 1 and 1/2oz @AlaskanRockVodka
15mls or 1/2oz @combierliqueurs pamplemousse rose ruby grapefruit liqueur
20mls or 2/3oz fresh ruby grapefruit juice
10mls or 1/3oz lime juice
15mls or 1/2oz ruby grapefruit and rosemary shrub*
couple dashes fee brother peach bitters

Shake/Strain/Ice
.
*For the shrub we’re using our usual cold-pressed method. Remove the pith and roughly cut up a half ruby grapefruit and add a tablespoon of rosemary fronds (don’t chop them as that will interrupt the colour) and a couple tablespoons of good quality white vinegar (we like @moroworld products). Refrigerate overnight if you can and then press and strain through paper towels. The rosemary presents as an aroma rather than a flavour in the shrub which is just right as here we really want to showcase the grapefruit but still add a gentle herbal hit to round it out. Serve with a giant clear ice ball, a half grapefruit slice and a couple rosemary sprigs and enjoy.

The @combierliqueurs team has been at it for decades in 🇫🇷 and they know what they’re doing. The flavour profile of this pamplemousse liqueur is very sweet side yet the citrus aroma and flavour is still really fresh. The juices are necessary - as a balance to the sweetness but it’s the bitters that really elevate this 🥃. Sacre bleu this is good looking and great tasting cocktail. Cheers all!

Here at Rock HQ we’ve fallen in love with Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto. Bergamot liqueur. That fantastic scent for candles - woody citrus mint - is now a fantastic aroma and flavour for 🥃. The bottle alone is worth the investment - a fabulous design with a stopper that’s pure beauty. But it’s the contents that really delight. Italicus has a sweet profile which we think needs the lemon to cut it back a bit and introduce  fresh tart layer. It pairs very well with a ginger but nothing too strong - which is why we chose The King’s Ginger, for it’s impeccable smooth flavour. This drink is all about the senses - it has a kind of 'The Last Word' vibe, for those cocktail lovers who know their classic recipes. It’s strongish and if that doesn’t suit you it can easily be loosened with a bit of soda water while retaining the sensational aroma and taste.

{Fernet Flip a la Rock}

30mls or 1oz @AlaskanRockVodka
20mls or 2/3oz @fernetbranca
20mls or 2/3oz @lillet1872 white aperitif wine
5mls or 1/6oz simple syrup
1 small farm-fresh whole egg
.
Dry shake/Wet shake/Strain/Up
.
Shake the egg alone, vigorously, to break up all the proteins. Then add the liquids and shake dry again to meld the egg well. Then add ice and shake yet again to get the drink cold and slightly diluted without losing the slippery unctuous texture and air from the egg. Double strain into a chilled coupe and enjoy! Our flip is a bit unusual as we’ve subbed Lillet blanc for the commonly used sweet vermouth. We think Lillet compliments and doesn’t compete with the Fernet Branca. But we’ve kept the whole egg of course. Wouldn’t be a flip without it.

Fernet Branca is a hard core amaro with a 40%ABV kick and a strong herbal digestif flavour. Drink of choice of bartenders (particularly in San Francisco apparently) and of Michael Caine in the Dark Knight Rises 😉. It’s a great drink that’s been around for 150+ years, a testament to it’s powerful delicious flavour. We say it’s presence in a home bar is one of the marks of a true cocktail aficionado. .

Dry shake/Wet shake/Strain/Up . Shake the egg alone, vigorously, to break up all the proteins. Then add the liquids and shake dry again to meld the egg well. Then add ice and shake yet again to get the drink cold and slightly diluted without losing the slippery unctuous texture and air from the egg. Double strain into a chilled coupe and enjoy! Our flip is a bit unusual as we’ve subbed Lillet blanc for the commonly used sweet vermouth. We think Lillet compliments and doesn’t compete with the Fernet Branca. But we’ve kept the whole egg of course. Wouldn’t be a flip without it. . Fernet Branca is a hard core amaro with a 40%ABV kick and a strong herbal digestif flavour. Drink of choice of bartenders (particularly in San Francisco apparently) and of Michael Caine in the Dark Knight Rises 😉. It’s a great drink that’s been around for 150+ years, a testament to it’s powerful delicious flavour. We say it’s presence in a home bar is one of the marks of a true cocktail aficionado. . 30mls or 1oz @averna

Stir/Strain/Ice

Bruise the mint leaves quickly and drop them into a mixing glass with a sliver of ginger cracked open to release its aromas. Then add ice, liquids, the salt and stir well to get this really cold. Double strain over a clear ice ball and garnish with a mint sprig piercing a candied ginger square.  Cheers all!

Averna Siciliano is a sensational amaro, quite powerful and very popular. We get licorice and chocolate as well as bitter citrus rinds in the flavour profile. It’s so good we like it alone on the rocks but here we’ve paired it with Rock and a tart fresh shrub which really elevates the Averna flavour. The mint and ginger do the work of adding aroma rather than flavour. The salt brings everything together without being present at all. And adding the soda water loosens the 🥃 up and makes it less spirit heavy. We’re very happy with this recipe. It’s a perfect summertime cocktail.

Amaro Montenegro is a favorite at Rock HQ and another antique 🇮🇹 product. It’s got lovely orange-cinnamon-cloves and herby notes. It's only 23% ABV and the colour is quite light which makes it simply perfect for mixed 🥃. Here we've paired it with Rock, ginger and lime and the combination is bittersweet, fresh and warm all together. Double strain over a giant clear ice sphere and garnish by expressing oils from a small piece of lime peel, then add the peel as a twist to the rim. This drink is a real joy 🎉🎉. It’s strongish but it would even work loosened up with soda water because the complex flavours go so very well together. Cheers all!

Campari is a genius amaro dating all the way back to 1860 (a year before Italy 🇮🇹 was even unified) from the Piedmont region, up north, just outside Milano. It has a very bitter orange profile but there’s a sweet undertone that makes it a delight as an aperitif and a mixer. And the colour is simply out of this world. It’s deservedly popular everywhere 🌎 and we say no home bar is complete without it. Negronis and Americanos need Campari. Rather than pair it with orange here we’ve chosen to go with lemon because it somehow let’s the Campari present more freshly - it’s still a bitter-edged 🥃 but the lemon schnapps, juice and maple syrup balance it out resulting in a delicious complex flavour and an even brighter red colour. Garnish with a dark Amarena cherry on an Alaskan Rock cocktail stick and enjoy!

Adding the bitters and the juice makes for a truly flavourful fresh 🥃 with a lovely gentle bitter edge. Our inspiration started with @mixtressnyc Gotham cocktail found on @liquordotcom - thanks Julie! And thanks Mike @mmydrinks for developing Amaro Week. Keep this cold and enjoy. We had to play with the quantities a bit to keep the sweetness at bay but the amounts shown work to deliver a 🥃 with a fresh herbal fruity bitter note. Garnish with a glacé pineapple 🍍wheel studded with fresh mint and enjoy!

Glassware today is from the US 🇺🇸 and Finland 🇫🇮. The glasses are from Avon’s ‘1896' range made in the 1970s. They’re paired with Iittala Arabia glass coasters for a kind of Vanderbilt, DuPont, Roosevelt, ‘The Knick’, New York old money vibe. We always thought the Avon business was solely ladies selling makeup door-to-door. Turns out the company had a wide catalogue including glassware. Learning is fun especially when there’s a drink to enjoy at the end of the day 😉.

The original 🥃 is just brandy, pernod and vodka, A bit austere for our taste. Our overhaul swaps out the brandy for the schnapps and adds the shrub, citrus and sweet syrup. Fill your glass with clear ice, double strain the drink and top it up with a splash of soda water - which is what makes it a sling - garnish with mint and enjoy. The flavour profile is complex and not too sweet, it’s actually really well balanced. This is a keeper recipe, definitely worth making a giant punch bowl of this for your summer parties.

*For the shrub grate 1 beurre bosc (brown) pear and tear a generous sprig of mint, add a tablespoon of @dorsetmaplereserve maple syrup (bourbon-barrel aged) and 2 tablespoons of good quality white wine vinegar. Cover and refrigerate for at least a couple hours before straining. Brown pears have a terrific level of sweetness which makes them perfect for balancing the vinegar in shrubs.

2 pipettes each @wildhibiscusco Blure and Rose & Hibiscus concentrate

In a stirring glass muddle 8 blueberries with a pinch of salt then add ice and the Rock, hibiscus mixes and bitters and stir well. Double strain into small tasting glasses or shot glasses, adding some clear ice shards and 2 blueberries each as garnish, and serve on a bed of crushed crystal clear ice pieces filling a bowl-type vessel. This 🥃 recipe is a fantastic showcase of Rock’s sipping excellence. The fruit and bitters bring a gentle sweet flavour and the salt isn’t present in the flavour profile but, as Dave Arnold @cookingissues says, it just seems to make everything taste that bit more fresh.

This drink is fruity sweet and warm and citrusy and fresh and omg😍 it's a triumph of blended flavours. If we had some fir from a forrest (that’s ‘bosc’ in French) we’d use that but we’ve settled for garnishing with a piece of glacé ginger on an Alaskan Rock 3D metal printed golden cocktail stick. However you prepare this drink, enjoy!

*For the shrub cut up a brown pear, removing the stem and seeds and add a heaped tablespoon (meaning 2 tablespoons, really) of good ginger marmalade. We use @buderimginger because it has just the right amount of ginger heat and doesn’t overdo the sweetness. Add a quarter cup of good white vinegar and throw everything into a blender. Refrigerate the mix for a couple hours to “let the flavours get to know each other”, as the great @bingingwithbabish would say. Then strain the mix carefully through papertowels to get a shiny and intensely flavoured liquid ready for use. .
FUN FACT: The original incarnation of Alaskan Rock during prototyping was a pear liqueur but we went with vodka - more versatile and a better match to our name. We might release a limited edition pear flavoured Rock in future because there’s just something about brown pears that we really adore and they go so well with Rock.

If you follow our feed you know we love vanilla and Licor43 is an outstanding 🇪🇸 vanilla liqueur. Over ice with orange juice and mint would be fantastic but with Rock, sherry, lemon and bitters it is out of this world good. The lemon cuts through the syrupy quality of the Licor43 and the sherry adds an earthy complexity and Rock brings it all together. Garnish with a twist of lemon, expressing the oils into the drink, and enjoy!
