Alight at Euston for the abandoned National Temperance Hospital (London Temperance Hospital before 1939).
.
Opened in 1873 by the National Temperance League, it was managed by a board of 12 teetotallers with a mandate to discourage the use of alcohol.
.
In 1931, London-born Chicago magnate, and former personal secretary to Thomas Edison, Samuel Insull donated $160,000 to build a new extension, the "Insull Memorial wing".
.
Though organisations such as the National Institute for Medical Research have in recent years attempted to make use of the empty space, the buildings may be demolished to make way for the proposed HS2 (High Speed 2) railway.

Alight at Ickenham for St Giles' Church:
.
The original nave and chancel of St Giles' church have been dated to 1335 while the bell turret was built in the 15th century.
.
A memorial to Robert Clayton, the infant son of Sir Robert and Dame Martha Clayton, is on a windowsill within the church, in the shape of a sleeping baby. The boy had died a few hours after his birth in August 1665 at Swakeleys House, where his parents had been staying to escape the Great Plague. Sir Robert was an alderman of London and went on to become Lord Mayor of London in 1679.
.
For context, elsewhere in the year 1665:
•Margaret Porteous is the first person recorded to have died in the Great Plague of London. Two-thirds of Londoners will leave the city, but over 68,000 die.
•The London Gazette, the oldest surviving journal, is first published as The Oxford Gazette.
•England installs a municipal government in New York City

Alight at Charing Cross for The Chandos pub, off St. Martin's Lane.
.
The ceaseless labours of the figure of the cellarman (or drayman) working away at his barrel, contrasts strikingly with the opulence of the high-society rotating globe atop the neighbouring Coliseum.
.
Featuring the delicious line of Sam Smith's beers, The Chandos is split over two floors, the upper "Opera" bar being slightly less mobbed and more luxurious, with leather sofas and armchairs.
.
Known as the Bulls Head until 1891, it became the unofficial headquarters of Fijian troops during the First World War, many of whom carved their names on the counter. The tradition then repeated when the sons of the earlier men came to fight Hitler and added their own signatures.
.
When the veterans returned years later they were appalled to find the counter removed following refurbishments. However, they tracked it down and it was later sent (cleaned and polished) to the Fijian capital Suva, to be displayed as an unofficial war memorial.

In addition, the Olympic stadium in Stratford is not the first to be built in London but the second.

The first was built in less than a year for the 1908 Games, which were meant to take place in Rome but London offered to step in after the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 1906.

Bracken House was designed by Sir Albert Richardson and built in the 1950s to serve as the headquarters and printing works of the Financial Times newspaper, on a cleared bomb site southeast of St Paul's Cathedral. It was the first building built after the Second World War in England to become listed.
.
It was named after Brendan Bracken, 1st Viscount Bracken (1901 – 1958), an Irish-born businessman and minister best remembered for opposing the Bank of England's co-operation with Adolf Hitler, and for subsequently supporting Winston Churchill against Hitler. He was also the founder of the modern version of the Financial Times.
.
Bracken served as Minister of Information from 1941 to 1945, when a civil servant by the name of George Orwell also worked in his department.
.
The building is clad in pink sandstone as an allusion to the characteristic pink colour of the newspaper.
.
Above the entrance on Cannon Street is an astrological clock, decorated with the face of Winston Churchill at the centre of a large gold sunburst, designed by renowned artists Frank Dobson and Philip Bentham.

Alight at Putney Bridge station for tranquil views and river walks.
.
The history of the original wooden bridge at Putney is tied to a tale from 1720 when Sir Robert Walpole was returning from seeing George I at Kingston and, being in a hurry to get to the House of Commons, rode to Putney to take the ferry across to Fulham.
.
The ferry boat was on the opposite side, however and the waterman, who was drinking in the Swan, ignored the calls of Sir Robert, who was obliged to take another route. Walpole vowed that a bridge would replace the ferry.
.
The first permanent bridge between Fulham and Putney was completed in 1729, and was the second bridge to be built across the Thames (after London Bridge).
.
It lasted for 150 years, when in 1886 it was replaced by the stone bridge that stands today.

My wife, being Sri Lankan, can get rather impassioned about the quality of 'authentic' Sri Lankan fare in London. I have more than once seen her optimism turn to irritation after a single bite - even in the 'little Sri Lankas' of East Ham and Tooting.

Alight at Stanmore for the Bentley Priory Nature Reserve: Summerhouse Lake lies in the centre of the reserve, formed by the damming of Edgware Brook. It was named after the lakeside gazebo of Queen Adelaide, the widow of King William IV, who spent the last years of her life there in the 1840s.
.
In the summer dairy cows freely graze in the meadows and the public park, while to the east of Heriot's Wood and alongside the public footpath is a private Deer Park.

Alight at London Bridge station for the Shard: “This is my vision: I foresee the tower as a vertical city, for thousands of people to work in and enjoy, and for millions to take to their heart”
-Renzo Piano
.
Standing 309.6 metres, the Shard is the tallest building in London.
.
In 1998, entrepreneur Irvine Sellar lunched with Italian architect Renzo Piano. Piano flipped over the restaurant's menu and sketched a spire-like sculpture emerging from the River Thames.
.
He was inspired by the railway lines next to the site, the London spires depicted by the 18th-century Venetian painter Canaletto, and the masts of sailing ships.
.
Piano's design met criticism from English Heritage, who claimed the building would be "a shard of glass through the heart of historic London", ironically giving the building its name.
.
London has a peculiar history of 'heritage' groups and the odd influential Prince opposing efforts to introduce any modern elements to the city's skyline. London, of all the metropolises of the world, is surely the most architecturally jumbled and incoherent - and all the better for it.
.
It is a city where the bricks of million-pound residences squirm away from social housing estates in the next street; brutalist concrete towers rub shoulders with royal residences; gothic palaces, medieval castles, roman walls, and yes, even gleaming glass skyscrapers jostle for space.
.
I sometimes wonder whether the ancestors of our self-appointed cultural protectors pilloried Sir Christopher Wren when St Paul's Cathedral dared to stick it's domed head above the slum dwellings of the 17th century.

Alight at Stratford for the ArcelorMittal Orbit: the 114.5 metre (376 feet) tower is Britain's largest piece of public art, while also providing vantage points to allow visitors to take in the entire Olympic Park via two observation platforms.
.
It was designed by Turner-Prize winning artist Sir Anish Kapoor together with Cecil Balmond of engineering group Arup.
.
According to Kapoor, the design brief from the Mayor's office was for a "tower of at least 100 metres (330 ft)", while Balmond said that he was told the Mayor was "looking for an icon to match the Eiffel Tower".
.
Kapoor said that one of the influences on his design was the Tower of Babel, the sense of "building the impossible".
.
Balmond, working on the metaphor of an orbit, envisaged a moving electron cloud, to create a structure that appears "never centred, never quite vertical".

Alight at Victoria station for Westminster Cathedral: called "a masterpiece in striped brick and stone in an intricate pattern of bonding" by John Betjeman, it is the largest Catholic church in England and Wales and the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster.
.
The cathedral was built on lands purchased in 1885, a site on which had previously stood the second Tothill Fields Bridewell prison.
.
The Tothill Fields Prison of 1834 was built in the form of a shamrock, with each ‘leaf’ effectively forming a separate prison. (It was not uncommon for prison guards to become hopelessly lost in the labyrinthine structure.)
.
In the 1860s the prison held a number of child inmates (one as young as five, having stolen 5/9d from a till, his second offence). But the great majority were illiterate petty-criminals under the age of sixteen. As one boy put it "I seem to like thieving". Others were there for the heinous crime of knocking at doors and running away.
.
Another boy, hoping for a meal and a roof over his head at Christmas, threw stones at gas-lamps in the vicinity until he was arrested.

(It was not uncommon for prison guards to become hopelessly lost in the labyrinthine structure.) . Alight at Victoria for Victoria Palace Theatre: the theatre began life as a small concert room above the stables of the Royal Standard Hotel, a small hotel and tavern built in 1832 at what was then 522 Stockbridge Terrace, on the site of the present theatre.
.
By 1850 it became known as Moy's Music Hall. Alfred Brown took it over in 1863, refurbished it, and renamed it the Royal Standard Music Hall.
.
At the opening in 1911, a gilded statue of ballerina Anna Pavlova had been installed above the cupola of the theatre. This was taken down for its safety during World War II, and was lost. In 2006, a replica of the original statue was restored in its place.

Alight at Monument station for St Dunstan in the East: the original church was built around the year 1100 before suffering severe damage in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
.
Sir Christopher Wren contributed the tower and striking steeple to the reconstruction in 1695–1701; the only part that was to survive Hitler's Blitz of 1941. This time the church was not rebuilt.
.
The ruins are now a public garden and green oasis, offering a tranquil space for lunching office workers (I once counted myself among their number).
.
The exotic planting, such as figs, palms, banana plants and grape vines that twist around the ruined structure evoke comparisons to a tropical temple being consumed by the jungle.

Alight at Mile End for the Chinese Pagoda: a pagoda had served as the entrance to a Chinese exhibition in Hyde Park in 1842. When the exhibit finished it was secured for 100 guineas and moved to Victoria Park to ornament the principal island.
.
The original park planner and architect Sir James Pennethorne had designed a Chinese bridge, complete with lanterns, to connect to the pagoda island but it was never built, and during the World War II the pagoda was severely damaged.
.
The crumbling structure was targeted by arsonists and finally demolished in the 1960s.
.
It was replaced in 2010, this time joined by Pennethorne's Bridge according to his original design.
.
Renowned local politician George Lansbury wrote in 1928:
.
“We did not understand what was on the island, which had, then as now, a Chinese pagoda [..] 60 years ago, we children thought that Chinese lived in the pagoda and at night came out to take care of the ducks, swans and waterfowl.”
