Something I love about thrifting is the hunt for something special. Not really knowing what you're going to find, a search for gold in the midst of a thousand different items. I actually was looking at a purse right beside this Mat & Nat bag from Kenneth Cole. It wasn't until the woman helping me took the other bag out that I could see this one. A small black Mat & Nat handbag, with the tags still on!!! I fell in love instantly. And now there's rarely a moment I'm without it...steal of a deal for $25! After using this bag for the past month, I'm loving this little guy, because I'm so used to carrying around massive tote bags, but a small handbag simplifies everything somehow!

If there's anything I've learned thrifting, it's that the rewards come to those who search just a little longer. πŸ˜‡

Hey Babes and Happy Friday! Today is the day for a little introduction to these two crazy girls (us) who make up all things Awaken Her. Mostly for any of you ladies who are a little newer around these parts. πŸ˜‡ We are Elizabeth & Johanna (aka Lizbae and Jo πŸ’πŸ»πŸ’πŸΌ). 24 year old Toronto dwelling ladies with a love for Jesus, people and life. Our passion for this blog coincided when we realized we both had negative self-image growing up, and struggled to understand what having an identity in Christ looked like. We also both used media growing up as a benchmark for beauty and fashion standards.
β€’
β€’
With Awaken Her our goal is to be honest & comfortable in our own skin, and create a space where you are reminded that you are valuable, loved and worthy. That goes beyond what you look like, dress like, or what your story is. We want to point you to Jesus in everything we do and be real and transparent as much as possible (bear in mind we are ALL on a journey. NO ONE has it all together).
β€’
β€’
On Awaken Her you'll find a dose of fashion (mostly thrifting and sustainable styles), relationship tips, and a whole lot of God talk. Now introduce yourself down in the comments πŸ‘‡πŸΌ and let us know a bit about you! We love making new friends πŸ’•πŸ‘― #fridayintroductions

Colossians 3:2 MSG "Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christβ€”that’s where the action is."
β€’
β€’
I love the line in that verse that says, pursue the things over which Christ presides - because it makes me think about what I'm pursuing right now. Am I pursuing things of Heaven or earth, eternal or temporary? The action is where He is. The life is where He is. Creativity is where He is. Salvation is where he is. Sometimes we just need to pick up our eyes and see Him. Catch a glimpse of Him. A glimpse - just a small one - is enough.

HEY! You didn't wake up this morning to be mediocre. Just a loving little nudge (even on the Tuesday after a long weekend... β˜•οΈ+β˜•οΈ=😁)

It's not just about what you're thankful for (my fellow Canadian loves πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ - as we celebrate thanksgiving this weekend).
β€’
β€’
It's also about WHO you're thankful TO. Who's made an impact in your life? Who's your biggest cheerleader? Who's had the tough conversations when no one else would? Who pushes and pulls the GOLD out of you? TELL THEM. Thank them. Let them know this weekend how grateful you are for them. We don't do this enough and it's probably not possible to do too much.
β€’
β€’
And, don't forget to praise God for all the ways he's comforted, provided and loved you through every season, up and down this year. He is SO (so, so, so) faithful. Put aside some time on this turkey stuffed weekend (praises πŸ™ŒπŸΌ) to soak up his presence and fill your life with gratefulness for your Heavenly Father and the good gifts He gives. 😘

Phillipians 2:4 "Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."
β€’
We talk SO MUCH today in our world about "looking inward." Whether it be self care, decision-making, knowing ourselves and getting in tune with your emotions. Can I be real and transparent for a moment? Looking inward is not the solution to a hurting and broken world. I don't think looking inward all the time feeds anything but selfishness and greed. Compassion, generosity, advocacy and justice will never take place if we can only soak in our own world, our own opinions and our own problems.
β€’
β€’
I also feel the need to clarify that I am not saying to not take care of yourself, value yourself or love yourself. But I am saying this: loving your neighbour is the opposite of adapting a lifestyle that only looks inward. So is forgiveness. So is grace and mercy. So is turning the other cheek.
β€’
β€’
I've tried the whole "looking inward" lifestyle in small chunks, and again, transparent moment πŸ™‹πŸΌ: it left me feeling pretty empty, more unhappy and more selfish than I've ever been. Maybe one of the things we need most is to look outside ourselves, help a friend in need, take CARE of each other and bring solution to hopeless situations all around us. There's something in "looking outward" that feeds the soul and brings hope like never before.

Work on the process more than the product. Focus on the path more than the perfection.
We're so obsessed with finishing something and making it perfect, when the growth, stretch and lessons are in the path in between where we are and where we're going. I personally struggle with this a lot and know I'm not alone in this place. It's hard to take risks and step out when we can't see what the end will look like. But the process and the path hold so much more value than a perfect product. Hope you know today that you can rest in that, be strong in that, and love the journey that you're on right now. We're in this together! Happy Wednesday πŸ’•

DONT LET YOUR SHADOW DEFINE YOU.
β€’
β€’
You are more than your past mistakes or failures. You are more than what you have done, are doing or will do in the future.
β€’
β€’
Can I just tell you for a moment? You're pure gold. You're pure possibility and opportunity babe. You're pure potential. You've got everything you need to move forward, enough strength for today and enough bravery for tomorrow. Please please please know that your shadow has nothing to do with who you are becoming. And remember, if you keep your face pointing to the sun, your shadow will always fall behind you.

The magical thing about home, is that it feels good to leave and even better to come back.
β€’
β€’
Ya'll, today was a good afternoon to stretch out the feet, curl under a blanket and take the longest nap ever πŸ˜‚ I think my heart just needed a little down time this afternoon and so that's exactly what I did. Then hubby and I went out for a hot chocolate walk and played checkers at a cafe. Home isn't necessarily the place, but rather the people and the ease you feel in a certain atmosphere. Tag someone who's presence always makes you feel right at homeπŸ‘‡πŸΌXx

I love getting inspired... who doesn't? That rush of excitement when you hear or see a new or reinvented idea and you can't wait to try yourself. I get bored with my hair easily and love trying to do new things with it, not always succeeding, giving up and sticking with what I know and what works.
β€’
β€’
But recently I've seen a few people on TV or walking down the street with the double buns and rocking it. I wanted to rock it too, so I tried it out and liked what I was able to pull off! There's always new ways to be bold, take risks and step out of our comfort zones!! Anyone else out there try something new or tried pulling off a fashion statement with a good result?

HAVE YOU EVER FELT FACELESS?
β€’
Like you are just another number, another statistic, another body in the crowd? I live in a city where sometimes it can feel like you see everyone and no one sees you. I mean, they see you but not YOU. I want to encourage someone right now, that if you feel FACELESS, there is someone who sees you. Someone who not only recognizes your face, but created it. Placed each freckle and eyelash, formed your nose and lips, sculpted each line and angle. In a crowd of a million, he can point you out and say, "That's Her."
β€’
β€’
Maybe people wonder why I talk about God a lot on here, blog about Him and share about simple daily revelations. The reality is that I can't tell you your value, worth, purpose or meaning without pointing back to the One who has made you all those things. God is your Creator. No one can make you feel faceless if you recognize that your identity lies with a Good Father who has intentionally created each part of your existence. You have a face, you have a name, you have a purpose. No human being can take that away, because they were not the ones to give it to you in the first place.
β€’
β€’
"I’m never out of your sight.
You know everything I’m going to say before I start the first sentence.
I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too -- your reassuring presence, coming and going." (Psalm 139: 2-6)

⚠ ️SOS GIRLS ⚠️ - I'm going to this blogging/collaboration/influencer event tomorrow for our blog, hosted by @thekitca and I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO WEAR.
β€’
β€’
For reals, I'm gonna be around a bunch of other fashion and beauty bloggers from Toronto (I wonder if they knew when they invited @awaken_her that I don't have a favourite mascara or lipstick, I just buy whatever is on sale πŸ™ˆ). I love all things fashion, but when it comes to something like this do I dress it up, dress it down? Wear pants, a skirt or a dress? I know I wear confidence like a BOSS but now I just need an outfit that says the same thing!!! Aha. Not gonna lie here girls, I am a little nervous about this event and feeling like a fishy 🐟 out of water but:
1. Apparently there's some free swag and you girls know how I feel about letting you in on all blogging benefits and free rewards if possible. AKA giveaway coming soon πŸ˜‡
2. I would love the opportunity to meet some other Toronto bloggers and develop some relationships, so I'm hoping for that opportunity tmrw!
3. PLEASE Cast your votes below or DM me! If you were me and needed to fake it till you make it, what kind of outfit would you rock? I'm counting on you girls here!!!

Hey there! We know it's not the right day for #fridayintroductions, but honestly what better day than Monday to start off on the right foot and share a little bit of our story?!
β€’
β€’
We are Elizabeth and Johanna, commonly known by our friends (aka YOU πŸ˜‰) as Lizbae and Jo. We met about 4 years ago, became roommates 3 months later and bonded over our love of dance parties πŸ’ƒπŸΌ, thrift shopping πŸ‘—, some great God conversations, and being a part of building the local Church πŸ’’. We soon realized we're also both passionate about helping other women find their identity and grow into everything God has for them. Which is pretty much how Awaken Her started and how she still exists right now. You know that saying "brunette and a blonde with an inseparable bond?" Yeah, that's pretty much us. Couldn't be more opposite in A LOT of ways, but somehow it just works and we can't get enough πŸ‘― High five for teamwork that makes the dream work! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ
β€’
β€’
β€’
I (Jo) am all about the content, message and direction of our blog, while Lizbae focuses on making everything around these parts look extra pretty and visually appealing.
β€’
β€’
When we're not blogging, you can find us working our day-jobs, though we'll never quit our daydreams 😊. I work full-time at a cafe in the distillery district, and Lizbae is a junior graphic designer at a print shop downtown. Awaken Her is our part-time side hustle and fulltime passion, if you catch our drift 😏. You can find us refuelling ourselves sipping cappuccinos (soy for Lizbae), finding inspiration through Pinterest or Podcasts, journaling and devotions, or having some downtime browsing the newest releases on Netflix with a pint of ice cream in hand (BLESS).
β€’
β€’
Tell us a little something about yourself in the comments!! πŸ‘‡πŸΌWhat fun is Instagram if you can't make new friends? Start by telling us your fave ice cream flavour, cause clearly 🌞summer🌞 isn't leaving anytime soon. Mine's salted caramel 😁 (Lizbae's is chocolate, but the dairy free kind...I think, aha!) xx

Hey loves, hope you're having an amazing Saturday ☺️ I spent the day thrifting with some of my friends (check it out in our story if you'd like, I took some risks from what I would usually try on and I'm SO happy I did!)
β€’
β€’
β€’
I've been reflecting, journaling and thinking a lot on this blogging journey. @elizabethvgregory and I have so much exciting stuff planned, we've set deadlines and goals for some new passion projects and it's so cool to have a vision and mission for where we're going. I just sometimes I feel like I'm gonna explode with excitement. But, I want to encourage you in saying that I didn't always feel that way. I've been blogging for 3 WHOLE YEARS now, and you could say that there's been times where I've been disappointed by how slow the results have come or how disengaged I felt with every aspect of blogging.
β€’
β€’
The one thing I've had to remind myself (and I want to remind you of right now) -- is to STAY IN YOUR LANE. whatever your lane is..it might be blogging, it might be school, it could be some sort of passion you've been pursuing. Stay. In. Your. Lane. The easiest thing to do is look over and think, "I need to do it like her" -- it's so easy to get down on yourself. Instead, put your head down and do the work. The hard work, the long work, the work that no one else will see. And stop worrying so much about the numbers!! I found that when I stopped worrying about numbers and started caring more about putting out content that would help people, my perspective changed and we actually started to grow OUR TRIBE in a healthy way. We're still learning so much, there's so much more work to do, and it's not to say you cannot learn from others because you SO can. But since Elizabeth and I decided to focus on the Awaken Her lane, put our heart into her and play the small part we can play with excellence, she's done nothing but GROW, GROW, GROW from a place of health. That's all because we just decided to stay in our lane. So I want to encourage you RIGHT NOW with whatever you're facing today, to stay in your lane. No one has the lane you have girl, so just run. Love you's. Xx
