Eat the foods you love, eat the foods that make you FEEL your best, and fuck the rest... follow your inner gauge - not someone else's..
.
.

If you like fats in your diet, why do you have to be Low Carb? OR if you love carbs, why do you have to limit your fat intake??
.
.

Just eat it all, carbs, fats, sugars, proteins, in a ratio (without counting, tracking or weighing) that feels right for you!!
.
.

Have your salad, chicken and rice...but have your chocolate, bread and ice cream too! 🙃😏
.
.

Find YOUR balance! .
.

Have healthy foods - have processed foods..as often or as little as YOU desire.. .
.

exercise as you desire, and how often you want - whatever feels healthy and balanced for your body and mind.. .
.

If you start to take things too far again with food or exercise, be aware, and tweak as needed before it becomes an obsession or you go to the extreme again. .

At one point in my life, I had backed myself into a lifeless/neurotic corner of isolation… due to my restrictive, obsessive, and extreme behaviors…
.
.

I began to believe "that was just how it was going to be" for the rest of my life… UNLESS, one day, my extreme and purity obsessions would magically come through and I'd wake up, able to finally live a quality life…
.
.

But that day never came...that is, until I finally let go of the "quest" and all that bullshit..
.
.

Over time, I was able to slowly begin to let go of the dieting, the restricting, the body checking and shaming, the over-exercise as punishment, the obsessing on external appearance and material goods - as ways to “bring me happiness..”
.
.

I gradually started to get out more, hang out with NORMAL people that weren’t engrained in clean eating dogmas, diet mentalities, or crazy exercise regimes and who had a healthy approach to food..
.
.

I started to get out into nature, and move my body in ways that were meditative for me, and that I actually could see myself enjoying for the rest of my life, not because I needed to burn off calories or because it's how everyone else worked out..
.
.

I started to surround myself with normalcy in all places of my life, and SEPERATED myself from the diet industry, the clean eating accounts, the fitspo, and the feeds of "what I eat in a day" videos that were full of more restrictive tendencies…
.
.

I felt absolutely lost at first… without all of this, I felt I did not have an identity.. .
.

So..I started to really look within, and question why I was doing all of this, and who I was and what MATTERED to me, and what I really wanted out of life…
.
.

Long story short…I was able to find a balance that worked for me with food, exercise and my appearance.. .
.

And since then, I’ve been able to live a healthy lifestyle.. the one I was so desperately seeking for almost a decade…and find the love of my life, see the most beautiful places, be spontaneous and adventurous, and be FREE, without limits..
.
.

Anyone can break free.. it’s just a hell of a journey that takes time, patience and consistency..

SHOULD YOU EAT OR SKIP BREAKFAST??
.
.

The further you get away from following your body’s intelligence and intuition, the further you get away from finding the most optimal way of living for your unique body physiology.
.
.

It’s hard to find our way back to our intuition once it’s suppressed and lost after months and often times years.. Now, if that’s just where you’re at, it’s of course doable to reconnect with your body’s subtle inner communication; it’s just a journey and you must be patient with yourself.
.
.

Remember, just because one day you’re ravenously hungry upon waking and the next day you are not, this does not mean you have to forbid yourself from eating when you're hungry nor force yourself to eat, if you're not..
.
.

Just like with all aspects of life, things are always fluctuating. Depending on activity levels, brain stimulation, times of the month/year, stress levels, and more, your appetite may fluctuate as well.. This is not a one-way-only approach.
.
.

I personally tried intermittent fasting — all sorts of variations. Not eating before 12, only eating within a 4-6 gap window, not eating past 5 or 6 pm, only having liquids in the am until 12, and more.
.
.

I struggled physically and mentally, as in I was weak, fatigued, lacked brain power and focus, lacked emotional stability (irritable / hangry), I got shaky, dizzy, faint and lightheaded, and was consumed with thoughts about “when I could break my fast” and what I was going to eat.
.
.

Moral of the story: Listen to your body, regardless of what others are doing around you. .
.

Your body knows best; following your inner guide is the safest most effective route when it comes to finding a sustainable lifestyle plan for the long run..

You’re going to continue living, so you might as well learn to accept and love the body you’re in along the way. Don’t you agree? .
.

Loving yourself doesn’t make you fat and hating yourself doesn’t make you “thin..” So why spend your limited time here hating yourself? .
.

What would happen in your life, if you were to drop the shaming and degrading thoughts, inner dialogue and behaviors? .
.

What all would you gain in life? What all would you lose? .
. …I’ll tell you what, you’ll be able to enjoy life guilt free and unapologetically be YOU. You’ll be able to do this without that inner critic holding you back from expressing your self without holding back. And as a result, being more pleasant to be around by your family and friends!
.
.

If you can accept, love and nurture yourself at a point where you don't feel your “best," you'll be able to truly appreciate yourself once you get to wherever you want to be and it will be coming from a healthy mindset.
.
.

As a former fitness model and bikini competitor, I’ve gotten the supposed “body of my dreams;” Yet, I still of course felt insecure and never good enough. I got down to a dangerously low body fat % which is unfortunately what is idolized in our modern culture, with 6 pack abs and no fat, no cellulite and no flab to show. I still felt dissatisfied and as if something was missing. .
.

Why? The void that is missing, the love that is not being given, cannot be filled by “losing weight” or getting ripped and lean. It comes from within; giving the love to yourself, and living a fulfilling life doing the things you’re most passionate about, helping others, learning, teaching, experiencing, adventuring and surrounding yourself with supportive, inspiring and loving individuals. .

Unfortunately I deleted all photos at my skinniest at 90lbs.. .
.

these are the photos I still have of me at an extremely low weight and body fat %...and this was close to one of my worst points of my "lows"... [as a raw vegan]..
.
.

These points stated above are only a fraction of how bad I felt mentally and physically.. as I touted this diet as the most healthy and optimal diet for humans.. a facade and lie I had been brainwashed into believing as the only "truth"..
.
.

The story behind this smile was a broken girl who was so confused and frustrated as to why things were only getting worse no matter how much she tried to be "pure" "perfect" and "healthy"..
.
.

She couldn't see that her diet restrictions were contributing to her break down, and struggles.. .
.

She couldn't see past her dogmas, nor could even imagine her actions of trying to restrict and control, were just digging her deeper into her grave..
.
.

Life wasn't worth living anymore and there wasn't an ounce of hope left that things would ever get better.. accepting this as a fact, that I'd either die soon or that one day I'd finally get "clean enough" from my diet that it would all change, and I'd finally be healed.. and I could then live the healthiest life from their on out..
.
.

This day obviously never came after years of grasping on and being so rigid, dogmatic and regimented.. .
.

It did come though, after letting go and really recovering.. and Luckily, I was able to break free.. from a situation of feeling OUT OF CONTROL, that gave me enough brain and bodily energy from eating normal food and enough of it, to wake me the hell up and start the shift into recovery and healing..
.
.

I talk more about my story and of this shift in my book Damn The Diets, in my newsletter emails if you subscribe on my website, or in my videos on YouTube.. it was a crazy journey, and so grateful to have gotten out alive.. .
.

This is why I do this, to help others break free too. .
.

Life IS worth living. It IS possible to break free and truly heal.. .

Beauty comes in all different forms, from the inside - out..
.
.

In a culture that predominantly values only external appearance, materials and things as a way to define our beauty, it's easy to forget all the other things that make you SEXY
.
.

Bringing positive value to this world, being innovative, showing empathy, showing kindness, sharing humor, "being there" for a loved one, being supportive for another, taking action to give back, standing up for a cause you believe in, having patience, being honest.. - these are some of the most beautiful things we can do that go beyond just the aesthetic of our being!
.
.

Have a wonderful day, and give a couple genuine non-appearance based compliments today 💃

We have to stop the comparisons.. they just make us go insane..
.
.

And quit with the "shoulding" on yourself.. .
.

You shouldnt be anything other than you. .
.

You shouldn't be doing anything other than what feels right to you, regardless of what others are doing and preaching as the "right" or "only" way..

Let others run their course and be themselves, while you stand strong in your uniqueness, and stay true to you .

Find YOUR balance, and screw the rest. ✨💃

I’ve gotten several questions on weight gain in recovery that I’d like to address altogether:
.
.

It’s as if we’re slowly taking off fog goggles that distort our perception on what a body should look like.
.
.

We weren’t born with the fog goggles.. But growing up within the modern diet and beauty culture, the fog glasses are screwed on tightly right under our noses..
.
.

In recovery, the challenge is to begin to really take in the fact that all bodies should be different - (like snowflakes).
.
.

Maybe some have a resemblance to one another, but really, like all things in nature, everything is so unique and thats the beauty of it! Man tries to control, conform and make everything so linear and black and white..
.
.

Nature is more flowing, chaotic, contrasting, and colorful.. us humans are apart of nature, even if we’ve become more separate over the domestication of our culture - at the end of the day, we are not separate..
.
.

I know the feeling of how uncomfortable it feels when the weight keeps climbing. Mine was quick! Within the first week..(even though it was edema and necessary fat gain)..it was horrifying regardless and my eyes didn’t have time to adjust or adapt; I quickly wanted to revert back..
.
.

And I did a couple times in an attempt to try to control the weight gain.. but that didn’t help of course.
.
.

My body wouldn’t release the weight even if I tried to go back to restricting at this point..
.
.

So eventually, I had to completely let go and just fully 110% embrace the process of letting go.
.
.

Of course it wasn’t perfect from there on out, and I had my ups and downs, but that’s the challenge in life we have to always deal with.
.
.

You have to become strong in your new ways in order to stick to them. You can’t get away from diet culture and photoshopped magazine photos for the time being… (hopefully one day the media gets away from that.. but for now, it is what it is, and developing an inner strength will keep you going and to successfully recover and stay recovered..)

Feeling stressed trying to do everything "right"?!
.
. -"The foods at the restaurant aren't "clean"
.
. -"You have to eat only organic at all times"
.
. -"You must go to bed at 9pm"
.
. -"You must wake up at 6am to be successful"
.
. -"You have to do HIIT workouts or hot yoga to get the most optimal fat burning effects"
.
. -"You can only eat Whole Foods to be healthy"
.
. -"You can only eat raw foods to get the most nutrients out of your food"
.
. -"You must only eat plant foods if you don't want cancer"
.
. -"You have to "do more" in order to be worthy and productive"
.
. -"you have to have sex a certain way in order to be good enough"
.
. -"you have to look a certain way, dress a certain way, talk a certain way, act a certain way in order to be accepted"
.
. -"you can't eat fat or else it'll make you fat"
.
. -"you can't eat fruit or else it'll feed candida"
.
. -"you can't eat gluten because all forms are hybrid GMO's these days and it'll cause inflammation, gut imbalance and brain damage"
.
. -"you can't drive and eat even if you're busy or else you won't have optimal digestion"
.
. -"you can't combine certain foods or drink water with meals or else it'll fuck up digestion"
.
. -"you can't sit with your laptop on your lap - you'll get cancer from the radiation"
.
. -"You have to drink over a gallon of water a day"
.
. -"You can't have oil, salt or sugar; they're toxic"
.
.
.
.

These debilitating and consuming thoughts can over power our mind and literally make us go insane, dictating every move we make.. .
.

which actually ends up having the complete opposite affect of why we do them and becomes UNHEALTHY - taking 10 years off our life do to the stress - stress of trying to be perfect.
.
.

Yes we live in a weird environment these days, but if we spend our days stressing on what's wrong, and not on what's right, the stress will probably kill ya faster.. what can we do without it takin over?
.
.

Find a balance, a balance that works for you. Not everyone can do everything themselves - give yourself a break and breathe! I had to set myself free of this neurotic cycle too..

Watch the full video on What I Ate in Recovery vs How I Eat Now on Youtube!
.

.
.

I receive messages asking me to share what I ate in recovery vs what I eat now, post-recovery and how it differs. That is, without the extreme hunger, desire to binge, and without restricting foods, calories or times to eat..
.
.

So I made a brief video on what it looks like :) .
.

Keep in mind: I like to keep things simple as well as vague with what I eat, when I eat it, etc... why?
.
.

Well, because the whole point of breaking free from the diet mentality is for us to stop following what others are eating, and to finally reconnect with our inner intuitive guide. We do this so we can eat what we truly want, despite what others are doing..right?
.
.

With that said.. I also know how helpful it is, whilst being in recovery, to watch normal eaters: what they eat and how they can be flexible around eating - from times to eat, what they were eating, and how much or little they ate.. .
.
It was motivating to see people get to a point of normalcy around eating - who said they once felt they'd never be able to get away from the feelings of extreme hunger, binging and insatiable hunger..
.
.

At one point I felt this would be impossible for me, because I hadn't felt satiated for so many years; it seemed too far fetched and hard to even fathom a life with that kind of freedom..
.
.
But low and behold, after months of letting go completely of all restrictions, rules and external guidelines, and feeding my body consistently, I got to this point I never imagined would be possible... .

Watch the full video on What I Ate in Recovery vs How I Eat Now on Youtube! . . head over to YouTube - Username: Kayla Rose Kotecki . I also know how helpful it is, whilst being in recovery, to watch normal eaters: what they eat and how they can be flexible around eating - from times to eat, what they were eating, and how much or little they ate.. . . ✨TAG SOMEONE WHO INSPIRES YOU TO ACCEPT, LOVE AND EMBRACE YOUR SELF AND BODY BELOW ✨

It's important to show our appreciation to those who help us along our journeys .
.

And to acknowledge each other, as we are all helping each other
.

Alone, this battle would be 10x more frustrating and defeating to get through.. but together we help uplift and empower each other.. .
.

enough of this competition-better-than bullshit.. inspiring, complimenting and uplifting each other, is powerful!
.
.

which is why I'm so grateful for all you strong souls sharing vulnerability and standing up for what feels right to you for once, in an act to better yourself as well as to help someone else along the way..

We are more than a number... especially a number that cannot take into consideration all the possible variables that contribute to defining our physiological situation..
.
.

BMI cannot measure our muscle mass, our activity level, our level of health, the diversity within the many types of bodies, and things of this nature...
.
.

The number also is not the only thing that matters... there's so much more and fulfilling things to life than defining our value and self worth based off an inaccurate number. .
.

BMI is not an indicator of health either.. a person with a "healthy" BMI can actually be very unhealthy. Whereas as a person with an apparent "unhealthy" BMI can be very healthy.
.
.

Look beyond the numbers! Calorie counting, body weight, BMI, macronutrient ratios, etc..

Who is the weight loss for? Who is the "getting to an extremely low body fat %" for? Who are the photos for? Who is the "gluten free" for? .
.

Is it all really for you? Is it for a trend? Or is it also because we feel pressured by society, diet culture, social media accounts, etc., and because instinctually we seek approval from those around us, in order to please others to gain their approval, we therefore sacrifice our well being in fear of losing others .
.

we lose ourselves, our voices, our desires, our health, our sanity, our intensions, in order to please strangers and/or loved ones..
.
. .

When really it'd be so much nicer to be around the few people who love and accept you for you, respect your voice and support your true essence..
.
.

rather than having many people around that don't have your best interest at heart or you trying to gain the approval of those who will just never give it..
.
.

Empower yourself enough to know your worth, to know you'll never be able to please everyone, and to not give a damn about what people say about how you want to live your life!

When you're in the trial and error phase of "Finding Your Balance" and you get to the level of "fuck it all".. lol 🤷‍♀️ .
.

I don't know what made me feel worse after... drinking mimosas, or going on all these extended juice cleanses.. lol .
.

I went through a phase where I felt like I just needed to cleanse and fast all.the.fucking.time.. .
.

to heal my body, my digestion, my inflamed tissues, my brain fog, my "cravings", my depression, my [nonexistent] fat away, you name it..
.
.

It became an obsession and I truly came to believe it was the go to cure, when I'd try to add back in new foods and started negatively reacting to every food, or if the weight started to creep back up, or if I felt guilty about a meal or food choice..
.
.

Over exhausting my body and depleting it so much from all the cleansing and detoxing and fasting just exacerbated my issues and fueled the fire making me SICKER, NOT healthier.. (and angry, irritable, fatigued, and more..)
.
.

I'm sure going on extended mimosa fasts wouldn't make me feel too great, haha but I can honestly compare the two, because of how much health the extended juice and water fasting took from me.
.
.

I know this is controversial in the world of "detoxing" as the new trend, but I'm being real here and I've seen and worked with far too many people that ruin their health, digestion and metabolism from over cleansing and extended fasting from their "purity quest"..
.
.

Just eat the damn food. Your body is always detoxing regardless, or else we'd be dead, if it ever stopped. .
.

Find a balance that works for you, of healthy and "fun foods" to maintain health but also sanity.. everything's neutral, everything's food, and everything will nourish you in some way whether physically or mentally..
.
.

Don't fall into the hype that you must do extended fasting in order to be healthy, pure and clean.. just like we're trying not to give in to the message that we must look a certain way aesthetically in order to be worthy, sexy or beautiful.. .

I am happy to admit I was wrong with all my extremist clean eating and fitness escapades.. .
.

After ditching my fitspo account, I felt compelled to spread truth in hopes to help others break free as well.. .
.

so my main focus now is exposing the dark side to the over glamorized and idolized #fitspo accounts, bikini competing and fitness modeling in general..
.
.

THIS picture, is not healthy, nor should it be idolized or looked to as the ideal body, because I was severely malnourished and wasting away.. the exact opposite of healthy and fit.. .
.

Just what, 6-10 years ago, fitspo wasn't even popular, especially for women.
.
. "Strong is the new skinny" we started to say to justify our extreme and restrictive "lifestyles".. .
.

so instead of being at an extremely low body fat % just being skinny, it's now acceptable and "healthy" IF it's all muscle, skin and bones..
.
.

It's great to feel strong, empowered and healthy, I'm a huge proponent of this... but after going to the extremes trying to be the cleanest and purist I could be with my diet and the leanest, fittest and ripped I could be from over exercising, I found out that was not how to attain genuine levels of health and fitness..
.
.

Fitspo has created a dysfunctional relationship with exercise, our bodies version of a healthy body fat % and what "clean eating" should represent... .
.

Over the years it has become the "norm" to want to look like this, and we feel pressured from social media to have to get to an extremely low body fat, in order to be "fit, healthy and sexy"... not true, fuck that.
.
.

We need to bring back balance and true fitness to the health and fitness industry..
.
.

You guys are awesome by taking a stance, sharing your voice and helping to BE THE CHANGE. .
.

Stay strong my loves, it's not easy to go against the grain of "normalcy" within our culture.

When people decide to finally let go of the restrictive diets, over exercising and embark on a journey to begin to accept and love their body,
.
.

They often find it hard to adjust their eyes to the new changes their body makes drastically and quickly..
.
.

After seeing your body at a certain weight, fragile/depleted or at a super lean body fat % for so many months/years, are SHOCKED when their body begins to restore itself, and the weight climbs or the water retention/ edema builds up in such a short amount of time..
.
.

They don't give their eyes or mind the time to adjust.. nor do they take the uncomfortable action of trying to nurture and accept their new and healthy body through this healing journey..
.
.

Make consistent actions on the daily towards acceptance and embraceing the change! .
.

Focus on the benefits you gain from choosing to let go of the draining and depleting habits of the restrictive lifestyles..
.
.

Knowing that going back is only easy because it's familiar and comfortable.. But it's a familiar misery.. and only steals your joy and health..
