A question I get all the time: “when should I start reading to my baby?” For real - a momma of a 6 month old just asked me yesterday! And my answer: “when you’re 🤰🏽 pregnant!” While that may sound a tad dramatic, the answer is as soon as possible 📚 Reading is great for brain development, it fosters curiosity, and is a fun activity to do together. For our NICU families, it can be a difficult newborn experience, and reading is an amazing “normal” bonding that parents can still do while admitted. 👶🏻

Since reading isn’t only important for babies - what are some books you can recommend? It’s been six months since I’ve been in a book club, and I’ve got to step up my game! #learning #themoreyouknow #babies

Probably going to be wearing this sweater on repeat for the next two weeks! (Bought it for my “ugly Christmas sweater party” but I actually love it 😉) Thinking about treating myself with a weekend trip since it’s the last full week before holiday schedule at work 😍 What’s something you’re looking forward to this week? #holiday

Now that the first snow is here it’s officially @loveyourmelon season! My favorite thing about these hats? It could be that they’re incredibly cute while keeping my ears warm, but it’s that 50% of their profits go to partners that work in the field of pediatric oncology, fund cancer research initiatives and provide immediate support for families of children battling cancer. And you can credit your purchase locally so that nearby children’s hospitals get hats donated for their heme/onc unit patients based on your purchase! 💕 #loveyourmelon #cancersucks

Have a sweet weekend 🍪 Looking for a fun way to get in the holiday spirit? I highly recommend a cookie exchange with friends - show up with one type of cookie, go home with 10! 😍🎄 (this may or may not have been my breakfast... calories don’t count when you’re post call? right?! 🙊) #happyholidays #holidayspirit

As fellows we have to prepare all sorts of presentations. This week, I was responsible for our “morbidity and mortality” conference, which provides the opportunity for us to talk about a recent case and identify any areas where care could be improved. Having regular M&M presentations is an important piece of being a lifelong learner 🤓

Truthfully wasn’t planning on posting this boomie today, as it was taken right after my very last shift of residency in the ED. I remember feeling so joyful and accomplished at completing that goal, but I have something special to share today. And as Elle Woods would say, “Well this is so much better than that!” As of today I am officially a BOARD CERTIFIED PEDIATRICIAN 💁🏼‍♀️🎉🥂👩🏼‍⚕️ #girlboss #womeninmedicine #doctor

Been thinking a lot about women in medicine recently... After seeing some responses to the #GirlsWhoHeal campaign launch and @rishimd’s post yesterday, I thought I’d share a few reasons why I personally think it’s important to bring awareness to the #bossbabes of medicine:
1️⃣ According to the 2015-2016 AAMC report, even with 46% of graduating medical students and 37% of MD faculty being female, only 20% of full professors are women. Additionally, when looking at academic institutions the average distribution of department chairs is 17 male, 3 female (which is almost exactly the same as the averages of 18 male and 3 female chairs from the 2009 report 😱) 2️⃣ I have two friends that went to the same residency and accepted the same first post-graduation job. When they chatted about salary, she found out the guy was offered a salary that was $10,000 higher. 💸
3️⃣ While supervising a male intern last year, he deferred a mom’s question to me. Before I had the opportunity to answer, the mom looked at him and dead seriously said, “I only trust male doctors because men are smarter than women, so I want to hear your opinion.” 😵
So yes, I fully believe we need to keep talking about this because women are still less likely to be promoted, are still paid less for the same work, and can be discredited despite the same (or more!) training strictly based on gender. In high school I was told I would have to work harder to be taken seriously because I was a “tiny, pretty, sociable girl” which I didn’t believe then, but it’s 2017 and here we still are. I love the opportunity to be a part of this instacommunity that is harnessing the reach of social media to celebrate intelligent, successful women #yourvibeattractsyourtribe #womeninmedicine #thefutureisfemale

Happy Christkindlmarket season! 🎄✨ Throwing it back to last year’s visit at my favorite one (#Chicago 💕) •
If you’re trying to figure out how to spend your #selfcaresunday evening, I suggest visiting one in your area. It’s relaxing to pretend you’re shopping in a European street market while sipping a hot cocoa ☕️ or glühwein 🍷 (bonus points if it comes in a boot mug!!) Be sure to recharge for the upcoming week today ☺️

Happy Saturday! Hope you’re doing something fun today — as for me? I’m saving babies 😉 (Used lunch to document all the ways people can get ahold of me while on call: 📱📱📟) #neonatology #calllife babies

Who can spot the NICU essential in the background? 👀

In honor of 1k (😱🎉🤗) of you *choosing* to join me, here’s the five people (one not pictured due to vacation) who are stuck with me through fellowship. Remember that at the end of of the day, no one understands exactly what you’re going through like your co-fellows/residents/med students. Grateful for everyone that has survived the each of the trenches with me! And thank you all for coming along for the journey and sharing your experiences 😍 #medicaltraining
