Recently there has been a video that has been circulating of a boy crying and heartbroken over being tortured at school by bullies. My heart broke for Keaton.
I’m a born protector, I’m the oldest child and have been a protective sibling my entire life, still am. Before even leaving the hospital with Paloma, the thought “how will I️ protect her?” swarmed in my mind. That isn’t feasible 100% of the time. How do I️ prepare her for that day? How do us as parents prepare ourselves for that day? My response is always to fight back but at the same time I️ want to act in a way that will make Paloma proud and to set an example. How have you handled bullying? How have you spoken to your child about bullying? How have you as a parent talked yourself out of taking revenge lol?
Would love some thoughts on this issue. .

As a new mom all these expectations for Paloma’s first Christmas and her experiences take over. I’m not a huge “present person” personally, in fact I️ think they’re distracting to the real reason for the holiday. For me creating memories is what’s so special about Christmas (just ask my husband, he’s heard all my rants). So when the lights went up on the square nothing was more exciting than imagining what the moment would be like for my baby to see them for the first time. It was beautiful, Paloma loved it, she wanted to live there. .

Gooooooo Razorbacks!! Paloma went to her first college basketball game last night. And even helped call the hogs! We brought her headphones just in case but she did okay without them, we don’t know what kind of sound sensitivity she may have. I think next time we’ll wear them. She LOVED watching the cheerleaders and moving with the band! It was sooooooo cute!! .

#tbt Working alongside creative people who support “being a mom first” is so amazing and has blessed us beyond belief. Here @stephsmithweddings captured me comforting Paloma at a photo shoot. Also a huge shoutout to my incredible husband for being on set with me!! .

I️ think most parents can agree with me when I say having a child around has taught them to see and appreciate the small joys. Paloma’s most recent love is the wind. Before her I️ never thought about how it must be to experience the wind blow through your hair and to rush over your skin for the very first time. Little dove, continue to let the wind lift you!

With our first Down Syndrome Awareness Month coming to an end, I wanted to thank EVERYONE who participated in dialogue about Down syndrome. Also a huge thank you for the very inspiring families out there who worked so hard to spread facts and awareness about their awesome babies and children (young and old). We are more alike than different❤️ 📷@tanjaheffner

This little dove brings so much joy. That smile can melt all anxiety away, I can’t explain it. She brings peace, which is probably why we were meant to name her Paloma “dove” in Español. 🕊 When we first learned of Paloma’s diagnosis people told us ALL the time “they’re the happiest people”. Oddly enough that made me feel worse. I thought Paloma wouldn’t comprehend real emotion or understand what’s going on...and because she doesn’t understand she’ll just smile. I quickly learned that isn’t the case at all. She cries, she gets anxious, scared (which breaks my heart), HANGRY, etc. I truly believe that she just chooses happiness! What a sweet little dove. .

Longtime Sesame Street writer Emily Perl Kingsley has been advocating for people with disabilities since 1974, when her son, Jason (co-author of Count Us In: Growing Up With Down Syndrome), was born with Down syndrome. In 1987, she wrote Welcome To Holland, which has remained a source of comfort and inspiration ever since.
Welcome to Holland

BY EMILY PERL KINGSLEY

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability – to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this... When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip – to Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks and make wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland." "Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy." But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guidebooks. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you never would have met. It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around...and you begin to notice Holland has windmills...and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy...and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say, "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned." {continued in comments}

Tomorrow we're going to get Paloma's blood tested. It's suggested that kiddos and babies with Down syndrome should be tested for a thyroid issue at birth, and then about every two years. About 10% of children with Down syndrome have some sort of thyroid issue, who knew🤷🏻‍♀️? Wish us ( mostly me 😉) luck tomorrow! .

The "R word" never bothered me until I had a major perspective shift. I was a jerk and used it all the time, not caring who it could hurt or what kind of impact it could have.
Don't be like me.
Lets end the "r word"! .

Babes Support Babes// Our family has really been blessed to have found some amazing support by other babes. Whether or not these babes are mommies or not, the support has been incredible. Let's ignore the lies that surround us and tell us to be competitive with one another, that tell us to compare ourselves to one another. We are all made in His image, we are all here with a purpose. .

Hey new parents of babies with Down syndrome! A lot of what you'll read online might be medically somewhat accurate. But don't let it scare you. Don't Google "Down syndrome", it's kinda...excuse my French...but it's kinda bullshit. Don't let the internet's definition of your baby define your path! .

What my husband @dewalls has learned: "Becoming a parent is very scary. Period. You are consumed by new thoughts and worries. When P was born, it was the first we learned she had down syndrome. Almost immediately the thought of "down syndrome" entered my mind but was interrupted simultaneously by a voice telling me "Do not worry for I have given you this child." As a parent, you feel guilty for feeling guilty. Looking back on that night, I'm convinced God gave Genoa and I strength beyond our own means. The next morning we told my parents. As my Dad and I were walking out to prepare the truck to leave the hospital he stopped in his tracks, hugged me, and began crying. The peace I felt and the words I used to comfort him were not mine and were not necessarily meant just for my father that day. We have been blessed in that Paloma's health has been very positive. My daughter has excelled in every level of development beyond what "experts" tell us to expect. And she does so with grace. Her name means "dove", the symbol of peace. And no matter what kind of day I have, when I come home, I am reminded of who she is and what she already capable of when she lights up and smiles whenever she sees me. Or when strangers stop us in a parking lot just to say hi to her. Or when boarding a plane and every passenger lights up at her happy demeanor. God truly did give us this child. And everyday I come home to peace."
