Feeling grateful for opportunities to learn. One of the most prominent themes of neuroscience research in the past 20 years is that we are absolutely capable of lifelong learning and development. The structure and function of the brain changes as we practice new skills, develop new talents, challenge old perspectives, and stretch our brains and bodies in new and healthy ways. Go learn something new; your brain will thank you. πŸ€“

I recently returned from a week-long silent mindfulness meditation retreat and training for mental health professionals at Vallecitos, NM. For a week we practiced sitting and walking meditation, silent exercises in nature, eating mindfully, and learned from several outstanding instructors about how to help ourselves and others with challenging emotional states. I know this probably sounds a bit crazy, and at times it was a real mental challenge, but it's remarkable how you can get to know your mind and learn to profoundly savor ordinary experiences on a retreat like this.
|
I've maintained a regular mindfulness practice for a few years now, and it has significantly enriched my life. I feel like I had a great life before, but now it's like seeing life in 4k instead of 1080p. It's given me a greater sense of perspective, patience, equanimity, gratitude, and peace in my life. I feel a more authentic connection with other people and am able to savor the good even more while not being as bothered by the inevitable challenges that come up.
|
I've thought about some parallels between mindfulness practices and astrophotography. With the naked eye, we don't see the Milky Way as bright and as vibrant as this image portrays. But the light is there, and with modern digital camera sensors and a good lens we get to see more of the reality of what's really out there. In the same way, I feel like mindfulness practices open up a deeper and brighter view of reality, and with that comes an awe-inspiring perspective that makes life even more beautiful. You'll probably hear more from me in the future about mindfulness and a number of related positive psychology strategies. I'm working on some projects to make these practices more accessible to the masses, and I may even recruit your help in doing so.

Some call this rock formation in northern Arizona the "Control Tower"; for this image I'm going with "Cosmic Lantern." There's a memorable and bizarre story to go with capturing this image: It was after sunset and I was setting up the low-level lighting I used to highlight the formation, when I noticed my headlamp capture some movement on the ground. I looked down and saw countless Daddy-longlegs, each about 3 inches long, crawling all around. I kept trying to work around them, but it was hard to walk anywhere without stepping on them. When I stood still I would feel one or two start to crawl on my legs. I knew they weren't dangerous, but this was freaking me out. Waiting for full darkness and for the clouds to pass, for a while I had to march around, stomping my feet up and down to keep them off my legs! Blehh!!! |
Unfortunately, heavy cloud cover was blocking the Milky Way, so I had to settle for shooting the foreground and blending in the night sky from a different night at a nearby location. Both foreground and MW were shot at 55mm, and the MW orientation is true to the scene, so even though this image is a composite, anyone could get this shot with the right conditions. I will admit that some arachnids were harmed in the capturing of this image. 😣

"We can judge our progress by the courage of our questions and the depth of our answers, our willingness to embrace what is true rather than what feels good." ~ Carl Sagan

This is me playing around on the bizarre starlit landscape of this remote area of northern Arizona. You can't really see it in this image, but I'm up on the rock formation holding a small lantern; I liked how my 21mm Zeiss lens gives such a nice little "sunstar" even at f/2.8. I had actually hoped to capture a reflection of the Milky Way in the pond, but it was breezy and there were several good sized frogs in the pond that kept stirring up the reflection on the water's surface. I wasn't going to evict those little guys just to get my shot, so I settled for what you see here. Best wishes to my little froggy friends; glad we could share a few moments together under the stars. 🐸✌️

I was at Zion earlier this week, where I had plans to do some astrophotography. Clouds obscured the Milky Way so I didn't get what I planned for, but it's hard to complain when the clouds gave me this sunset. Love this place.

This is why landscape photographers are willing to get up at 4:30am in the middle of summer. You roll out of the sleeping bag bleary-eyed, check the eastern horizon in the twilight to see what the sky is doing, and quickly make sure you've got your gear together. Drive/hike out to the spot you scouted the day before. In bear country, you sing "She'll be Comin' round the Mountain" loudly as you hike in the dim light. Set up the tripod and work out the best composition as you watch the horizon grow brighter, feeling both anxious and excited if it looks like the light is going to be good. The light show starts, and you become immersed in the moment, in a state of "flow" (see research of psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi). Skills refined over the years kick in as you quickly and deftly manage camera settings, compositions, focus points. The best light may last for only a few moments, but in this state of flow it's as if time doesn't exist. You feel a sense of profound awe and gratitude at being there at this special moment, and deep satisfaction knowing you've captured a slice of the experience that will help you further savor it for years to come. Life is good.

Here's some pretty cool news: The Red Canyon Visitor Center (Scenic Byway 12, on the way to Bryce Canyon) will be hosting a gallery of my landscape prints, starting in a couple weeks, running through the end of September. The gallery will highlight my work from the GSENM artist-in-residence experience (including this new image from Devils Garden), as well as some of my other favorite images from areas nearby. The visitor center gets a ton of traffic, so I'm pretty excited! It's stressing me out though; I've never done a gallery before, but happy that others will get to enjoy these landscapes and maybe feel motivated to spend more time exploring these amazing places. If you're in the area this summer I hope you can go check it out!

Who's been to the very cool "Spooky" slot canyon off Hole-in-the-Rock Road (southeast of Escalante, UT)? What did you think? Good exposure therapy for anyone with claustrophobia! If you haven't been, you might plan on being there in the early morning or later afternoon/evening to avoid the bottleneck of adventurers; it's become very popular in the last few years!

"There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature - the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter." ~ Rachel Carson

The Old Paria area of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is easy to access, but I had passed it over on each of my previous trips thinking there wasn't much to see there. My mistake. I discovered this month as part of my GSENM artist-in-residence experience that it has some of the most interesting and colorful striated badlands I've seen anywhere. I ended up going there 4 different times, and it was interesting how the colors changed with different light. It's also the place I made some great memories teaching my first official photography workshop with some really interesting and fun people. The workshop was about integrating some simple mindfulness practices into our photography experiences, and the group really loved it. Maybe I'll write a blog post about it, as I think there are some great takeaways for savoring our experiences outdoors.
|
For this image I used a long exposure about a half hour after sunset, when the hills were still reflecting some really nice post-sunset glow. Waiting about 20 minutes, I captured another exposure once the stars were more visible, which I used to blend in to the main exposure for the final product. I think it communicates the experience of sitting out after sunset watching the light change on this unique landscape.

I'm back from the Grand Staircase-Escalante wilderness! It was a great 3 weeks working as the GSENM photographer "Artist-in-Residence." I got to see a lot of new amazing places, met some great and interesting people, worked my tail off, and put over 3000 miles on my truck. I'm exhausted, but it was worth it!
|
This image is from Sunset Arch, around 4:00am, accentuated with some low-level lighting. I also made a time-lapse of the Milky Way rising up through the arch; stay tuned for that post later on. Because my knee is still recovering from surgery to re-attach a ruptured patellar tendon, I had to hike back and forth several times to this spot to get all my gear out and back because it was too heavy to carry all at once (regular photo gear plus time-lapse slider, motion control gear for panning/tilting, lighting with stands). I may be a little crazy. I'll say it was worth the crazy. 😜

For reasons I can't fully articulate, I feel like this image represents very well the wonder and awe I experience when visiting this unique and remote landscape in northern Arizona. I've been here many times, and even though it's a small area geographically, I think I'll never tire of coming here. It's definitely one of my "happy places." |
For one, it's something of an effort to get here; it's miles from anywhere, and high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended due to the deep sandy trails (getting there is half the fun!). The terrain is just bizarre and fascinating in its own right, but when the light is really good (like on this evening) the pinks and reds just seem to GLOW from the sandstone. Then at night you can sit out on this otherworldly scene with the Milky Way and shooting stars giving you an unbelievable light show; and when you least expect it, there's the howling of coyotes in full surround sound, sometimes a little too close for comfort. :) You have to experience it for yourself. And, seemingly more are doing just that. I have mixed feelings about this place losing its solitary character. It will be a different experience with more and more visitors, but on the other hand it makes me happy if others can experience it and come away changed somehow. It seems strange to say, but I'm a better person for having spent time here. I hope you have places like that as well! And I'd love to hear where those places are if you care to share! |
