For the record, I’m not a camper. My idea of camping is a hotel room 😁But this kid here? He ADORES camp, especially @campiamspecial - an overnight camp about an hour away from us.
He’s been going for 5 years now, and I have to say that very first year was tough on this mama, despite my desire to always be striving for independence for him. But overnight camp? My six year old standing there, so little. Little on the outside, but as big as he could be waving “bye Mommy!!” happily, as my heart did a little flip inside, hoping he would be ok. It was a long week! We picked him up later that weekend, grimy and grinning from ear to ear. He couldn’t wait to get to camp the following year.
This camp now has a special place in our hearts too, and I’m lucky to be friends with the amazing woman who leads each session (and all the work that goes on in between sessions). The camp manages to have the BEST buddies. Every time. Fun and trustworthy. So I can breathe easier about drop off when he goes. Like yesterday (swipe), when he headed for a mini-camp weekend of fun (and some learning too). It will be a nice little break for all of us. Have fun buddy! We will miss you! 💙

“Until one becomes a mother, no one can ever tell you what it will feel like to love someone else so deeply and profoundly that you will rejoice when they rejoice, ache when they ache, feel what they feel - even without ever speaking a word”
28 years ago today, this young lady made me a mother with her arrival. She taught me so many things about unconditional love, determination, patience, gratitude and even advocacy on her behalf. We’ve watched her grow into a beautiful woman, inside and out, who is now experiencing all these things with Evelyn’s birth.
Happy Birthday Courtney. We love you! ❤️

Can’t say enough good things about the @toothbrushpillow and the folks behind this product. We have been partnering for just about a year now, and I’ve been honored to see their family grow to include a little one with Down syndrome through @reecesrainbow They have graciously hosted my blogs on disability topics, and Caleb has benefitted from using their product. He is quite independent with his toothbrushing now, using the Toothbrush Pillow.
So I was thrilled to learn about their new relationship with @yoocandoanything and also the fact that their helpful product is now available through the @especial_needs website, along with many other great products for the Special Needs community.
Also make sure to check out the new direct link to all my blog posts for them, recently renamed “Abilities with a Twist”. I’m working on one now about Therapies, but if you have a topic you’d like to know more about, let us know! Link in my profile. Have a great Thursday!

Ha! Love that poll feature on IG stories, and if you saw one of our stories last night...and you voted for mischief (over 80%!)....you were wrong! Little man was once again Santa-momma’s helper yesterday, sorting through “gently used” clothes (not sure anything that gets worn by Caleb is gently used, but it sounds nice right?) Every so often, we go through the pile of clothes that don’t fit this kid anymore. A stack that has been increasing rapidly over the fall 😢😢. The kid that wore the same size for three years is almost catching up to a decent size for his age (10). Seems like I’m blinking and missing weekly these days. #growthspurt
Anywho - we love the Vietnam Veterans organization, who actually will come to your house to pick up your donations. Clothes, toys, Knick knacks, etc. All set for them this morning, and Caleb gets another ✔️ on the Nice list for Santa 😊🎅🏻🎁
Thank goodness for a lazy Sunday yesterday. After the kids sang early at church, this mama came home at got into her pjs for the rest of the day, making more caramel corn and doing some Christmas crafts with Caleb. (And watching the @jaguars win!) We were supposed to go to a holiday event, but it was cold out, and my energy tank was running near empty. Something I’ve learned during recent holidays - I don’t try to do it all anymore. Because we all come away tired and frustrated, and that’s definitely not the mood we want!
One of the crafts we did is to make our own Christmas cards for family and friends. A little homemade love instead of spending $7 on a store bought card that might not say what we really want to say. Caleb is helping with the writing and decorating. They won’t be perfect, but it’s something we spend time and thought into each one. Two more weeks! We are diligently counting down! (Swipe). Have a great Monday! 🎅🏻🎄❄️🎁

Twinning with daddy yesterday as we headed out in the FL cold (50 is cold for us!) to do some shopping.
Traditions are certainly important to us (my post yesterday) but so is teaching Caleb about giving back - all year long, but especially at the holidays. We were blessed to be able to sponsor a family though an organization for Christmas this year, and had a great time shopping for them yesterday. Caleb will help me wrap the gifts today and take them to the organization next week. Hoping to set an example for him that giving back feels good and it’s fun too! Off to church and then a holiday event tonight - hope you have a great Sunday!
“It’s true, Christmas can feel like a lot of work, particularly for mothers. But when you look back on all the Christmases in your life, you’ll find you’ve created family traditions and lasting memories. Those memories, good and bad, are really what help keep a family together over the long haul.”
Raise your hand if you’re a mom and can relate to the above statement - especially the part about Christmas being a lot of work. Besides daily activities, add holidays events and parties to the mix, and then the little voice in the back of your head saying you need to focus on Christ and the real meaning, not gifts and cards. And speaking of gifts, most moms are mostly responsible for ALL the family gifts, save those for her. No wonder holidays can be stressful.
I’m not one for the kitchen usually, but there is one tradition that always helps me get back in the mood, and that is making Grandma’s delicious caramel corn. I’ve put my own little twist to it, and now it has become our special gift for friends, teachers, therapists and more.
Courtney used to help me make it when she was at home, but now Caleb is ready and chomping at the bit to do whatever he can to help - stirring, setting the timer, turning it every so often and especially tasting 😊. It is one of my favorite holiday traditions and we had our chance to get started last night. 4 batches down and a lot more to go!
What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?

Awesome to see this fun photo from last year’s @specialolympicsfl @publix @proctergamble Torch Campaign on the Special Olympics Florida FB Page last night, and a great reminder that the campaign for 2018 kicks off four weeks from today on January 4!
@specialolympics Athletes and Partners will be helping out at Publix stores - bagging and carrying out groceries, and also collecting donations to help as a fundraiser for all area counties. This campaign is a huge help to counties! In Duval County alone, it helps supply almost a third of our annual budget. And not just in FL - the campaign will take place in all Publix stores across their territories. Caleb and I will definitely be helping out again this year, along with many other @specialolympicsduval athletes and volunteers. So please consider a donation when you see our table!
“There are two things we should give our children: one is roots and the other is wings.” This saying hung in our kitchen growing up and I was always pondering it, waiting for that chance to spread my wings. I did so, and here I’ve had one child already do so too. She’s flown and doing a wonderful job of parenting her own little one.
Something about seeing this kid get older tho...I’m not sure if I’m quite ready. This same saying should apply, right? But it’s not quite the same. He’s definitely getting more independent, and although a part of me is thrilled, there’s another part that misses that little boy falling asleep on the way home from preschool. So, parents of little ones, enjoy those days of cuddles and naps. Time keeps ticking! And then they give you the hand lol 😆 (swipe)
