SCARE DEVIL // SAINT JOHN'S WORT
.
.
The pagan name πŸ‘ΉScare Devil πŸ‘Ήis a delightful homage to this magical being's ability to chase away dark spirits - physically, emotionally, energetically, spiritually. A powerful antidepressant, it works on many levels to restore brilliance to the system with the power of the midsummer sun. Traditionally, SJW is harvested in midsummer and made into medicine for the darker months to come.
.
.
This angelic little one was the first herb I worked with when I was just starting to explore herbal medicine. After a traumatic incident with a dog that left spots of nerve damage and numbness on my arms and wrists from bites, a daily application of SJW tincture returned all sensation within a month. The rapid healing brought relief to my banged up body and devastated spirit.
.
.
SJW literally regrows nerve endings and the myelin sheathes coating nerves, providing for a smooth firing of nerve signals. I'm curious about potential benefits for folks who have experienced circumcision and other traumatic shocks to the nervous system.
.
.
The plant is easily identified by the little dots in the leaves -oil glands- that look like windows when the leaf is held to the sunlight. To me these resemble the windows of the soul that SJW opens to receive sunlight. It's a powerful revitalizer/antidepressant for use in times when sunlight is limited. Interestingly, it's to be avoided internally when taking pharmaceuticals as it powerfully cleans the liver and flushes pharmas out of the body v rapidly. Topical oil application is preferred in these times.

WILD (seed) MUFF(ins) .
.
.
A flourishing Scottish ecosystem in a fluffy buttery bite.
.
.
These feralish muffins are constellated with loads of nettle seed and dock seed and split with a heap of elderberries. They are modeled after a @smittenkitchen blueberry bran muff recipe I've long loved, subbing milled wild seeds for bran, elder for blueberries. These wild foods provide a seductive richness of flavor and spectrum of nutrients not always present in cultivated varieties. For the bulk, I used buckwheat flour for wheat, honey for sugar, and loads of Scottish butter for olive oil. . .
Nettle and dock grow side by side throughout the world, in usual fashion of the antidote growing right next to the poison. Dock -leaves, but especially the root- neutralize the Formic acid that causes the nettle's sting. I'll often use a dock leaf as a hand shield if I am harvesting without gloves, and I'll save some to make a hand soak later when I get home. One too many sleepless nights with hands full of nettle acid has left me acutely aware of the remedies. Epsom salt soaks also tend to neutralize the sting.. unless you're into that kind of thing βš‘οΈπŸ‘Œβš‘οΈ
.
.
Fresh Nettle has long been utilized in a process know as Urtication, in which the body is flogged in an area of paralysis, chronic pain or arthritis to regain mobility and relieve pain. A teacher of mine regularly floggs/hits his back with the fresh stalks to relieve chronic pain. By creating pain on the surface, the more deeply seeded tension and pain can release. Try at your own pleasure 🌿

FERAL BALLS
.
.
Salty sumptuous wild seed balls with an orientation to the kidneys and heart. Packing a crystalline clear (read: no crash) energy that's heart opening and nourishing to the adrenals.
.
.
Inspired by a local-PowerBar recently made by my forager friend @pascalbaudar, these little balls contain kidney and heart troporestoratives nettle seed and hawthorn berry (both dried and powdered), elderberry low temp baked into a paste, local honey, chestnut, and sea salt. Mash together till an appealing texture is achieved. Start with small amounts of nettle seed (better yet, read up on it first) and increase till you find what works for you. As someone with kidney deficiencies, I'm so in love with these amazing seeds. They feel like faery kisses to my lower back and provide a sustained energy all day.
.
.
I'm all for chocolate and other tasty, exotic superfoods we need to import from thousands of miles away with huge ecological tolls... but when given the chance, I would any day rather munch up on the superduperfoods growing in the ditch behind my house.

Luscious Elder πŸ‡ buckets of these succulent berries are currently simmering lightly on my stove. The cyanide in the seeds is destroyed with heat, so juicing then flash heating makes these regal orbs fit for megadosing. I'm loving their rush of antioxidants and the sense they give me of being encased in an etheric gramma-like hug.

Blending in πŸ”± and discovering. Scampering for seaweeds like a little ocean goat off the coast of Mendocino. My feet love bounding barefoot across the rough battered rocks and crashing waves ⚑️🌊⚑️. There is such conflicting information about the purity of these waters regarding radiation, ranging from folks saying there is no detectable radiation, to saying that any radiation would decay by the time it gets to these shores, to a theory of selective uptake where seaweed provides such high concentrations of the stable form of the elements that radioactive isotopes are not absorbed. Then too there are folks who swear to not touch the seaweeds because they are so contaminated πŸ™€! Such mixed information. My gut guides me to and through these forests of sea algae - seaweeds are a major YES for me in my diet ✨🌿✨ My body and spirit feel ecstatic in the waters as I revel in the abundance of seaweed patches (note: Every seaweed is edible! The only caveat - is it palatable? Often more so once processed. Tangent.) My body is reinvigorated yet again upon eating the veggies and soaking up the incredible mineral rush they provide. OUAH! Here's to the glorious mama ocean and all she provides for the earth βœ¨πŸ€œπŸ½πŸ’›πŸ€›πŸΏβœ¨πŸ“Έ @pascalbaudar #waterislife #mendocino #seaweed #forage #wildcraft

Harvesting seawater for a fermentation project 🌊 an Indiana Jones friend and I traveled to Mendo to find the most pristine water to make kimchi in a traditional way - by dipping the veg in a sea water brine pre-ferment. This aquamarine dream water was as sweet as it was salty and oh so fraiche πŸ‘Œ

A few foggy mornings ago I was in a truck that flipped as it was driving along a slippery road by the ocean. My friend and I both made it out fine with barely a scratch, meanwhile the cab of the truck smooshed and the truck became destroyed. What a miracle to slither out of this cab alive! We were on the way back home from an epic wildcrafting adventure where we gathered sea water by swimming in the pristine aquamarine Mendocino ocean - huge waves had crashed on my little body while I scooped up the water and I cried-laughed with the ecstasy of being alive. God!! What a fine line exists between life and peril, and dear creation, I am so grateful to be on this side of the veil. I love life and its wild mystery. The succulent magic that unfolds in every moment takes me aback and tickles my every tendril! I'm wildly in love and feeling so blessed for all my friends, my home, delish strawberries, and this path we dance together. Here's to living and loving like it is the last time we will ever get to do it in these bodies! (Though I'd be really happy to have this one another hundo years) βš‘οΈπŸ™βš‘οΈ peace! Also, I literally love everyone. Thanks be to life πŸ’•

Now they can leave me in peace.
Now they grow used to my absence.
I am going to close my eyes.
I want only five things, five chosen roots.
One is an endless love.
Two is to see the autumn. I cannot exist without leaves flying and falling to the earth.
The third is the solemn winter, the rain I loved, the caress of dire in the rough cold.
Fourth, the summer, plump as a watermelon.
And fifthly, your eyes, Matilde, my dear love, I won't sleep without your eyes, I won't exist without your gaze, I adjust the spring for you to follow me with your eyes.
That, friends, is all I want. Next to nothing, close to everything.
I have lived so much that someday they will have to forget me forcibly, rubbing me off the blackboard. My heart was inexhaustible.
But because I ask for silence, don't think I'm going to die. The opposite is true; it happens I'm going to live.

Feeling the squirrel's presence stronger than ever these days. My head, heart, and hands have been down deep deep in the work these past few months and I'm feeling stupidly inspired. Release, and I'm grateful for the thermals that are always there to ride when I let go of things that don't quite work and jump into the wind #squirrelsquad #rideordie #ridedontdie πŸ“Έ repost beautiful astrologer @truthrooster

A few days ago I had the immense pleasure of joining @pascalbaudar and Zen of holy sacrament-quality chocolate @zenbunni on a foraging adventure and magical picnic in the hills of LA. Check out Pascal's work - he's a wild food artist with a sniper's eye for fine earthly alchemy. His creations inspire me to go further and higher than I've known was possible. After munching on so many raw leaves, blossoms, seeds, berries, then finally his wild food creations, I felt deeply connected to this Southern Californian land as I'd never before experienced there. I'm so grateful for the way wild-grown food brings me into deep connection with my surroundings. I'm also so grateful for the folks who share knowledge of culinary and medicinal wild-grown plants. This knowledge helps me orient to my surroundings in a deeply nourished way. Did you know that there are over 200 varieties of edible wild seed that are commonly available in California? That these seeds hold all kinds of nutrients and trace minerals that aren't so commonly available in grocery store purchased foods? Perhaps that's part of the electricity... Perhaps their dna sings to mine in such a delightfully primal way that my body can't help but say YESPLEASE.

Celebrating the birthday of my dear soul sister @agjelks with family this weekend. I love these people so much! They were my second family growing number up and the love is lifelong. Anna I adore you πŸ’› thanks for being so down for adventure, always. In the past few days we surfed, made bomb cake, swam with dolphins, paddle boarded, hot sprang, drank too much plum wine, met and pet wolves, went deep and laughed so hard, met Russians, burned shit, shared dreams, loved each other, blah blah aahhhh I'm so grateful for family.
