The picture, which may have been van Gogh's last self-portrait, was painted in September that year, shortly before he left Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in southern France. Regarding this painting Van Gogh sent it to his younger brother, the art dealer Theo; with an accompanying letter that says: "You will need to study [the picture] for a time. I hope you will notice that my facial expressions have become much calmer, although my eyes have the same insecure look as before, or so it appears to me." The Musée d'Orsay in Paris, consider that "the model's immobility contrasts with the undulating hair and beard, echoed and amplified in the hallucinatory arabesques of the background". 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Treasure: 👉 La Marchande de Fleurs - 1898
Artist: 🇫🇷 Louis Marie de Schryver

Follow: 🖼@europe_treasures⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 "The Flowers Seller” (French: La Marchande de Fleurs) is an oil on canvas painting (22x16 cm) by Louis Marie de Schryver, made in 1898 and housed today in a private collection. Shortly after the French artist Louis Marie de Schryver’s birth, the Impressionists began using the life of Paris for their artistic compositions. Everyday life of Paris was not a new subject, but what was introduced during the latter half of the nineteenth century was a growing interest in its fashionable streets and the city people who wandered through them. As the century came to a close, fashionable cafes, large-scale department stores, and World’s Fairs, such as that of 1900, invited Parisians to step outside of their homes and interact with one another in the fashionable and creative center of the arts. Louis Marie de Schryver's work offers a glimpse of the elegant life of the privileged class in Paris. Her paintings capture the grand boulevards, bustling with flower vendors, fashionably dressed women and stylish horse-drawn carriages that characterised the City of Light during the 'Belle Époque'. The artist developed a special interest in the proliferation of flower vendors in Paris, and chose them as the central subject of her works. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Among the greatest genre paintings of the Northern Renaissance, and the most famous of all Flemish illustrations of peasant life, this work here exemplifies the artist's late-style, with its use of monumental Italianate figures. While some of its content remains obscure, like nearly all Bruegel's paintings, The Peasant Wedding contains numerous symbolic references as well as a clear moralistic undertone. The work is one of several panel paintings by the artist which are held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The wedding banquet is shown taking place in a barn in springtime. The furnishings are a parody of a rich landowner's hall. In place of a finely woven tapestry, an old blanket hangs from the wall behind the bride. The wooden tables and chairs are roughly fashioned, while an old door has been taken off its hinges to serve as a banqueting tray. The main foods on offer appear to be bread, porridge and soup. Two ears of corn on the wall, together with a rake, are conspicious reminders of the hard grind to which peasants are born. On the left, two pipers are playing the pijpzak, while on the right the most distinguished-looking guest is sitting on an upturned tub. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941, and is regarded among Van Gogh's finest works and one of the most recognized paintings in the history of Western culture. Although it was painted during the day in Van Gogh's ground-floor studio, it would be inaccurate to state that the picture was painted from memory as he depicted this particular view in many different paintings and at different times of the day and under various weather conditions. The Starry Night is the only nocturne in the series of views from his bedroom window. The moon is stylized, the big star is Venus, the famous swirls of lights surround the stars and the cypress and the village all together give it a surreal atmosphere. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

They wed on 3 October 1609, in St. Michael's Abbey, Antwerp, shortly after he had returned to the city after eight years in Italy. The painting is a full-length double portrait of the couple seated in a bower (wikt) of honeysuckle. They are surrounded by love and marriage symbolism: the honeysuckle and garden are both traditional symbols of love, and the holding of right hands (junctio dextrarum) represents union through marriage. Additionally, Rubens depicts himself as an aristocratic gentleman with his left hand on the hilt of his sword. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Despite his profound faith, the artist rarely applied himself to religious themes. The signature in the right hand corner clarifies that in this case van Gogh was inspired by a lithograph based on Eugène Delacroix's Pietà.For this reason, the work is a mirror image of the original. Van Gogh painted it for his sister Willemien, to whom he wrote on the subject of his interpretation of the "Mater dolorosa", a woman of the people destined to suffering and often rejected by society. The figure of Christ is closer to traditional iconography; recognised by some observers as a self-portrait, it is in reality faithful to the model it is inspired by. The artist had previously realised a first version of the same subject, larger and with brighter colours, for his brother Theo; it is now displayed in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Tag: 🔑#europe_treasures
Follow: 🖼@europe_treasures⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 "The Baptism of Christ” (Spanish “Bautismo de Cristo”) is a large oil on canvas painting (350x144 cm) by Spanish Master El Greco. This evangelical episode is divided into two overlapping horizontal zones joined by the dove, which symbolizes the Holy Ghost. On the earthly plane, Christ, nude but for his loincloth, is framed by a red cloak, which is the liturgical color of sacrifice and martyrdom. On the right, Saint John the Baptist appears, wearing a camel skin. On the celestial plane, the Heavenly Father, rendered like a Byzantine Pantocrator alongside the entire angelical hierarchy, makes the event sacred. El Greco uses his customary language, with stylized forms and loose brushstrokes, obtaining an intensely spiritual expression. El Greco painted the scenes in small spaces, emphasizing the vertical format, and bathing them in a ghostly light that enhances the unreality of the figures, which are arranged in a very marked foreshortening and have very expressive features. The colours-cold, intense and contrasting- are applied very loosely over powerful anatomical constructions, and are perfect examples of El Greco’ s highly personal style in the final stretch of his career. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam. The exact year of the painting's completion is unknown, the Rijksmuseum estimates it as circa 1658. The painting portraits a "milkmaid", in fact, a domestic kitchen maid, and it is regarded as one of the best paintings of the artist. The housemaid is in a plain room carefully pouring milk into a squat earthenware container (now commonly known as a "Dutch oven") on a table. Also on the table are various types of bread. She is a young, sturdily built woman wearing a crisp linen cap, a blue apron and work sleeves pushed up from thick forearms. A foot warmer is on the floor behind her, near Delft wall tiles depicting Cupid (to the viewer's left) and a figure with a pole (to the right). Intense light streams from the window on the left side of the canvas. The painting is strikingly illusionistic, conveying not just details but a sense of the weight of the woman and the table. The light, though bright, doesn't wash out the rough texture of the bread crusts or flatten the volumes of the maid's thick waist and rounded shoulders. Yet with half of the woman's face in shadow, it is impossible to tell whether her downcast eyes and pursed lips express wistfulness or concentration, a bit of a Mona Lisa effect in modern viewers. She is going about her daily task, faintly smiling and our reaction is 'What is she thinking?'". 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

The painting is not signed, but described and mentioned by the artist in three letters. It’s the first painting in which the artis used starry backgrounds. Visitors to the site can still stand at the northeastern corner of the Place du Forum, where the artist set up his easel. He looked south towards the artificially lit terrace of the popular coffee house, as well as into the enforced darkness of the rue du Palais leading up to the building structure (to the left, not pictured) and, beyond this structure, the tower of a former church (now Musée Lapidaire). Towards the right, Van Gogh indicated a lighted shop as well, and some branches of the trees surrounding the place but he omitted the remainders of the Roman monuments just beside this little shop. The painting is currently at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

It is a tronie, a 17th Century description of a 'head' that was not meant to be a portrait, and it depicts of a girl with a headscarf and a pearl earring. The girl is wearing an exotic dress, an oriental turban, and an improbably large pearl earring. The dark background was initially intended by the painter to be a deep enamel-like green. This effect was produced by applying a thin transparent layer of paint, called a glaze, over the present-day black background. However, the two organic pigments of the green glaze, indigo and weld, have faded. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Painted during Cézanne's final period in the early 1890s, there are five paintings in the series. The versions vary in size, the number of players, and the setting in which the game takes place. It depicts Provençal peasants immersed in their pipes and playing cards. The subjects, all male, are displayed as studious within their card playing, eyes cast downward, intent on the game at hand. The painting at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris is the smallest (47x57 cm) and it is considered the most refined version, with the shapes being simpler but more varied in their relationships. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Follow: 🖼@europe_treasures⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 The Lady of Shalott is one of John William Waterhouse's most famous works, an 1888 oil-on-canvas painting (183x230 cm) of a scene from in which the poet describes the plight of a young woman. It is loosely based on the figure of Elaine of Astolat from medieval Arthurian legend, who yearned with an unrequited love for the knight Sir Lancelot, isolated under an undisclosed curse in a tower near King Arthur's Camelot. Waterhouse painted three different versions of this character, this is the first and is housed at the Tate Britain, in London. The painting has the precisely painted detail and bright colours associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. The Lady of Shalott pictures the Lady, who is the main character in Tennyson's poem, also titled The Lady of Shalott (1842), who is facing her destiny. The Lady has made her way to this small canoe with a few of her belongings. She had been confined to her quarters, not allowed to go outside or even look outdoors. "A curse is on her if she stay", wrote Tennyson. In the poem, a curse had been put on the Lady, but she defies the rules of the curse to see if she could live outside of her confinement. This is the moment that is pictured in Waterhouse's painting, as the Lady is leaving to face her destiny. She is pictured sitting on a tapestry, which showcases Waterhouse’s strong attention to detail. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

The Adoration of the Child shows a moonlit scene with Mary laying the Child in swaddling clothes. Joseph is looking over her shoulder and two angels are leaning over the crib. The moonlight is reflected off the faces in such a way that suggests the Child as a light source. The composition is reminiscent of much earlier versions, such as the 1490 Nativity at Night by Geertgen tot Sint Jans. It forms a full-length double portrait, believed to depict the Italian merchant Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife, presumably in their home in the Flemish city of Bruges. It is considered one of the most original and complex paintings in Western art, because of its beauty, complex iconography, geometric orthogonal perspective, and expansion of the picture space with the use of a mirror. The illusionism of the painting was remarkable for its time, in part for the rendering of detail, but particularly for the use of light to evoke space in an interior. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Although van Schendel trained in Antwerp as a painter of historical subjects, he became most famous for his so called 'nocturnes' or candlelit and moonlit market scenes. The artist was clearly influenced by the 17th Century northern masters of light, known as the Utrecht Caravaggisti. The present scene is set in the ‘Groenmarkt’, the vegetables market place at The Hague. To the right is St. Nicolas Chapel, used as a market place for meat, and the Tower of the old Town Hall. Lighting after sunset or in early morning was then provided by oil lamps and candles. This painting is a complex composition with numerous figures and a central stall in the foreground lit by a single candle and by the moon in the cloudy sky. The light clearly defines the delicate features of the various figures and the vibrant colours of the richly filled stall, full of fresh vegetables. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

It is one of the most famous images of the French Revolution. David was the leading French painter, as well as a Montagnard and a member of the revolutionary Committee of General Security. The painting shows the radical journalist lying dead in his bath on 13 July 1793 after his murder by Charlotte Corday. Marat suffered from a skin condition that caused him to spend much of his time in his bathtub; he would often work there. Corday fatally stabbed Marat, but she did not attempt to flee. She was later tried and executed for the murder. Marat's figure is idealized. For example, the painting contains no sign of his skin problems, his skin appears clean and unblemished. The Death of Marat is designed to commemorate a personable hero. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Treasure: 👉 Flaming June - 1895

Follow: 🖼@europe_treasures⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 Flaming June is a painting by Sir Frederic Leighton, produced in 1895 and housed at the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico. Painted with oil paints on a square canvas (120x120 cm), it is widely considered to be Leighton's magnum opus, showing his classicist nature. It is thought that the woman portrayed alludes to the figures of sleeping nymphs and naiads the Greeks often sculpted. Her pose is loosely modelled on that of Michelangelo's famous statue of Night, in the Medici Tombs in Florence, which Leighton regarded as one of the supreme achievements of Western art. The position of the sleeping woman gave Leighton a great deal of trouble. He made several preliminary sketches to determine the way in which she should lie; in particular he had difficulty making the angle of her right arm look natural. His studies show that the picture went through at least four evolutionary sketches before Leighton came to the end result. Out of these studies, four are nude and one is draped. The draped figure looks the least lifelike, demonstrating Leighton's need to draw from a naked model to achieve a fidelity to nature. The toxic oleander branch in the top right possibly symbolizes the fragile link between sleep and death. Flaming June has become Leighton's most recognisable picture. The realism of the transparent material worn by the sleeping woman, the stunningly rich colours and the perfectly recreated marble surround are characteristic of Leighton's work, as is his use of natural light. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 #oilpainting  #europeanart  #artists  #paintings  #cuadros  #cuadro  #painting  #npg  #musee  #beniculturali30  #kunstwerk  #peinture  #anneboleyn  #brotherhood  #england  #peintre  #Leighton  #fredericleighton  #museum  #flamingjune  #ponce  #pintor  #pintura  #portrait  #preraphaelite  #preraphaelites  #english  #englishart

A perfect square, the canvas depicts a couple embracing, their bodies entwined in elaborate robes decorated in a style influenced by both linear constructs of the contemporary Art Nouveau style and the organic forms of the earlier Arts and Crafts movement. The work is composed of oil paint with applied layers of gold leaf, an aspect that gives it its strikingly modern, yet evocative appearance. The painting is now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in the Belvedere palace, Vienna, and is widely considered a masterpiece of the early modern period. It is a symbol of Vienna Jugendstil—Viennese Art Nouveau—and is considered Klimt's most popular work. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

The title Two Sisters (French: Les Deux Sœurs) was given to the painting by Renoir, and the title On the Terrace (French: Sur la terrasse) by its first owner Paul Durand-Ruel. Renoir worked on the painting on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, a restaurant located on an island in the Seine in Chatou, the western suburb of Paris. The painting depicts a young woman and her younger sister seated outdoors with a small basket containing balls of wool. Over the railings of the terrace one can see shrubbery and foliage with the River Seine behind it. In 1880 to 1881, shortly before working on Two Sisters, Renoir worked in this particular location on another well-known painting, Luncheon of the Boating Party. Jeanne Darlot (1863—1914), a future actress who was 18 years old at the time, was posing as "the elder sister." It is unknown who posed as the "younger sister," but it is stated that the models were not actually related. Renoir began work on the painting in April 1881 and on July 7, 1881, it was bought by the art dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, for 1,500 francs. A fake of the work is owned by Donald #Trump. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛

Treasure: 👉 The Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt - 1616
Artist: 🇧🇪🇳🇱 Peter Paul Rubens

It was commissioned in 1615 to decorate Schleißheim Palace, along with three other works depicting lion, wolf, and boar hunts. The cycle of paintings were looted from the palace during the Napoleonic Wars. Only the Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt was returned to Munich, at which time it was added to the collection that is now the Alte Pinakothek. The hunt takes place on the banks of the Nile, as indicated by a palm tree in the background. As hippopotami and crocodiles were considered dangerous nuisances, their destruction was a duty performed by noblemen. The hunting party comprises three men in orientalizing costume—mounted on Arabian horses, who hunt with lance and sword—and two valets clad in roughly-hewn jerkins—one of whom has been killed by one of the beasts. The enraged hippopotamus tramples the crocodile, as both are attacked by the hunters and hounds. The accurately-rendered physical appearances of the hippopotamus and crocodile contrasts with contemporary renderings and reflect the period's growing interest in empiricism and natural history. The complexity of the figure grouping, representation of turbulent motion and violent action, high drama, and brilliant palette are hallmarks of Rubens' style. It has been suggested that Rubens may have traveled to Rome to view a temporarily-displayed dead hippopotamus preserved in brine prior to the painting of the picture. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛
