Iron rich sand; black from the ancient volcanos in the area, creates a reflective surface unlike anything I've seen on any coastline in the world. Partnered with a cliff line which has been eroding away for years, home to one of a few gannet colonies in the country. Welcome to New Zealand's West Coast, my spiritual home.
Active gannets at this time of year means the offspring are either incubating, hatching or taking their first precarious steps out of their cliff top nest while either of the parents are out fishing. The warm, gentle summer months provide the perfect nursery grounds for these coastal birds to build up enough strength to fly across to Australia come winter time.
Boasting historical Māori significance for its abundant bounty, Te Henga is a natural treasure. The setting for many solo adventures just like this one, it has captured my traveller's spirit since first arriving to this explorer's paradise. The combination of tide, wind, sky and surf means it is never the same twice, offering unique experiences each and every time I visit.
Poised on the edge of a Croatian cliff top, knees shaking from the adrenalin this view created. After what seemed an age of scootering along remote dirt roads and bush bashing through rugged terrain on the hunt for the mysterious Red Rock cliff jumping spot, this boat was a rare sight of civilisation.
Spring in New Zealand brings with it many unique adventure opportunities. Witnessing first hand the dramatic shift from Winter to Summer. From a quietly moody atmosphere to a perfectly temperate and sun stricken paradise that energises an entire country of adventurous people. Being in the middle of that powerful shift is a treat to behold.
This last 4 days of South West swell, North East winds and day light savings culminated in consecutive surf sessions lasting long after the sun dropped below the horizon. This place is a dream world and I couldn't be more fortunate to call it home.
Going solo back in Athens, I began my 2 week journey to Finland, not knowing how or when I would get there before my flight home. Just like so many things from this trip, I can confidently say it all worked out perfectly in the end. Welcomed by a beautiful Finnish native, taken to her summer cottage an hour outside of Helsinki where we enjoyed all the traditional Finnish joys that come with this quaint setting. After travelling through 14 cities, in 8 different countries, this was the perfectly minimal and deeply relaxing way to end a truly life changing European summer experience. To those who directly or indirectly helped make it what it was, I couldn’t be more grateful.
