Single Leg Circles : Leg, pelvis or spine focus? For me this a definite pelvis movement. And as the pelvis moves then the leg reacts to its displacement in space because it's not being held against movement and gravity. And the spine obviously reacts and moves because of the leg and pelvis weight changing. So if you do this as a leg movement/exercise then muscularly around the hip joint and in and around the abdominal region, there will be increased muscular tension. But I'm not saying that is wrong, it's just a different way of doing a similar movement. However my preference is to increase movement range which is less likely to be the outcome if I'm more tense. I refrain from teaching inhibition to movement. I prefer to teach flow, control and natural reactivity which imitates movements I would use daily #lovethis #movement #flow #feelsogood #movementbyangie #moveyourbody #movementculture #movementismedicine #sport #fitness #exercise #workout #training #athlete #sportsman #crossfit #hiit #pilates #strengthandconditioning #gym #love #loveyourbody πŸ’–

Rolling back......I'm not into making movements look pretty. I used to be, but that made me move more mechanically than fluidly which added tension to my body that I didn't need. So in this movement, when I roll back and up, I position my arms and head where they will help my spinal flexion rather than reduce it (which my arms will do if they are positioned too high!!) My aim throughout this movement is to utilise the capacity I have to flex my spine. I don't need to tighten my core because abdominal tension at the wrong moment will hold the spine in a fixed position. Instead I allow my abdominals to work out their involvement in order to create flexion. Movement can't work unless muscles do. But they know that; so let them do their job. #flow #movementculture #movementbyangie #movementismedicine #pilates #movement #spinalflexion #pilatesbody #pilatescommunity #sport #exercise #workout #athlete #love #loveyourbody #loveyourself #nourish #yoga #strong

Simplicity ✨..........Even though this looks easy, for some it won't be, to begin with at least. Inhibition at the hip joint is very common and can occur because of muscular tension around the hip, pelvis or spine which reduces movement. For most of us hip range has reduced because of poor movement habits and poor awareness. It's movements like this that can address dysfunction at the hip and associated joints and when done repeatedly with the correct cues, range can be restored. Mastering this kind of simple stuff is never not an option. It's the key to moving forward #simplicity #simplicityiskey #simplicityisbeauty #movement #moveyourbody #move #movementbyangie #movementculture #pilates #sport #fitness #workout #athlete #love #loveyourbody #movementismedicine #thestirlandapproach

Our body has an ability to adapt and react to itself as it moves. It works out which other parts of the skeleton have to give and assist and which muscles to use and how much muscular tension is required for that particular series of movements. We make movement too complicated by squeezing and tightening our muscular system consciously when it isn't necessary. Try it for yourself by lifting one arm above your head from a standing or sitting position. Lift your arm slowly and just think of the bones moving. Without any force, reach your arm as high as possible to the ceiling. Did you feel your body lengthen on that same side? And did you sense your ribs lifting on the front of your body? You may have felt your shoulder lift as the arm reached its furthest point and with that the breastbone may have elevated too. And if you didn't sense these reactions try again and allow them to happen. I'm sure if you didn't experience it first time then the second time if you allow more freedom to your movement, it will feel much better. And that's because your body is designed to move this way to encourage bigger ranges of movement. #rom is important to maintain or improve as we age. Otherwise we become stiff, unnatural and uncomfortable as we move. #moveyourbody : it's what it was designed to do ❀️

Can you bend your knee and hip fully? Can you full squat without your heels lifting? Can you achieve full ROM at your shoulders without pain? Do you even know how to move at your shoulder properly? Our body loves to move. It loves to move freely with little inhibition. Movement inhibition comes in the form of muscular tension even muscle soreness - anything that stops the body from moving freely and easily and naturally. So as much as some of us love to challenge our body with load and intensity with different exercise formats; #crossfit #metafit #hiit #running #cycling #sport #kettlebells #gym #strengthandconditioning it's essential that we also learn the benefit of decompressive movement patterning. Decompressive movement patterning is moving with the natural flow of the joint, allowing for muscular reaction to control the movement rather than muscular overuse (load & overload: squeeze, tighten, hold) If we constantly overload with the above types of exercise formats (which are all great modalities when used properly) we maintain tension within the muscular system which causes changes to movement patterning and therefore reduced muscle efficiency. This could lead to the onset of aches pains and then injury. So to maintain your interest and efficiency of the exercise you love to do, supplement it with good movement techniques. Watch how this movement flows because I allow it. Watch how I don't intervene with the flow. See how as something moves, something else moves to allow the next movement phase. Training to be strong doesn't always mean you have to lift weights!! Good movement will make you stronger! #moveyourbody #movement #movementismedicine #loveyourbody #pilates #yoga #flow #love #muscle #strength #strong #fitness #workout #motivation #exercise #feelthedifference #movementculture inspired by movement expert @portal.ido

Borrowed from my one of pilates inspirations πŸ‘ΈπŸ»πŸ’–πŸ’« @sianmarshallpilates I was ready to quit my job in the fitness industry 19 years ago after becoming disillusioned but then I found #pilates and #neverlookedback I had a lightbulb moment during my first few minutes of being on the @mkpilates course and then went on and also studied with @bodycontrolpilates both excellent training providers. Along my education pathway I've met some truly inspiring almost magical teachers who I've looked up to and who have brought the best out in me. And I hope I achieve this with my students and customers #thestirlandapproach #movementbyangie #openyourmind #lightbulbmoment #movementiseverything #movementculture #movement #pilatesbody #workout #fitness #moveyourbody #loveyourbody #movementismedicine #athlete #sport #love #yoga

FLAT-CAT-EXTENSION
This one is a prompt for my customers. Remember the importance and relevance the flattening/relaxing section is at beginning and towards the end. This reduces unnecessary tension that if present will inhibit certain joint actions. The idea is, when possible the body can react to load and create its own flexion rather than a forced flexion. It's all about movement in its most natural form when possible @kirstyj8 πŸ˜‰#movement #flow #decompress #spinehealth #spinaldecompression #naturalmovement #reaction #strength #mobility #flexibility #stability #pilates #dport #exercise #workout #workoutmotivation #athlete #football #rugby #golf #swimming #racing #loveyourbody #moveyourbody @heyjolondon #leggings πŸ’šπŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

Tricep Push-ups
It doesn't have to be perfect to be good. But if you understand 'how' and 'why' then you can progress. Movement practise is an always changing journey & you learn just as much from the not-so-good movements as you do from the better ones. And just for the record, I do no strength training other than training with my own body weight. I'm strong because I move well. See my #pistolsquat post. I never train legs but I can pistol squat! How? It's because I know how to move
