Corral

A new project has been added to our website.

http://www.ruralofficeforarchitecture.co.uk/projects/49/corral

The creation of a woodland camp in the Brecon Beacons for a family of city dwellers.  A rural escape from the urban pollution, be that both air and light, to provide a contained space to gather, play, cook and star gaze.
The corral acts as a unifying device to limit your depth of field, be inward looking towards the heart(h) and to frame the distant views of the mountains and sky above.

A tipi provides the main sleeping accommodation, with a composting loo and solar shower adding a modicum of comfort and civility.

Caring Wood Story: Model studies

There were countless models made for this project over a four-year period (we have around 6 boxes of rejected studies in the loft). At the start simple abstracts and adventures in form, then growing into things that looked like buildings, before eventually being made to scale. The study models we made ourselves, until the capabilities of my chaps in Wales were tested too far, and we needed to commission makers in London to realise the developed form, both in detail and context.
This one was made at 1:50 scale and was made in London, taking up a large chunk of James’s studio when delivered. It allowed us to test the setting out, tile kicks and window reveal details and proportions as well as to truly understand the hidden scale of the building (i.e. all the buried bits). Sadly I have no pictures of us standing by this (Fountainhead style) as the scale was impressive.

Caring Wood Story: Site Overview

The resulting estate composition was easier to explain in sketch form at first before the large site model was commissioned. The accommodation is laid out across the ridge in an east/west direction, with the rolling contours of the site allowing us to bury the south-facing Code 6 PV array behind a retained wall that provided a backdrop to the north-facing yard. This wall element was later shelved due to budget, and James was commissioned to design a stand-alone barn for this area instead.

Residency: APTElan1

An ongoing residency programme in partnership with the Arts Council of Wales & Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, creating accommodation & studio space for resident artists at Elan Valley. 'Thresholds of comfort' define a range of accommodation types, from the nearby town to the remote moorland. This sits at halfway point; the rear cabin to the engineer's house, to be refurbished for year round occupation.

Caring Wood Story: Cottage studies

These studies carried on with the estate cottage, a much less complex thing to resolve, where we looked to bottle the spirit of the main house in this smaller composition. The two oasts were placed either side of a pathway, which acted as an axis between the cottage, barn and main house. The terrace walls partly accommodated the plan and partly held up the hill, hollowing out a courtyard space to the south.

Studio: Sloppy thinking gets worse over time

It's Phillip's last full week this week before leaving us for a more urban life (as he is an urbane fello). He arrived some time back and took up residency under this beer mat which is blue tacked to the wall of the studio. A daily reminder of the standards we strive to achieve.

Poor bastard ... no wonder he's leaving.

Caring Wood Story: Early house elevations

Inhabiting the form became a form of pendulum design; back and forth between conceptual models and plans and sections, interrogating the volumes to suit the accommodation. We had established views we wanted to capture, but how large and how many wasn’t clear. So the pendulum process continued by abstracting the elevations to examine them as compositions in isolation before reassembling them as a volume to be tested against the emerging plan form.

We reverted to Lutyens and Voysey and spent what seemed an age deconstructing their buildings to understand why the composition was how it was, and learning how to trust ones instinct for composition and scale. This process reminded me of Geoffrey Baker’s 'Design Strategies in Architecture', and his decoding of Aalto’s Säynätsalo Town Hall.

It wasn’t until later that we presented these early studies to the South East regional design panel and were encouraged by Paul Koralek to think big, be brave and reject the vernacular. It was a great afternoon.

Caring Wood Story: Estate Cottage

Of course, the estate is more than the house itself. It also contains a barn and a gatehouse, known as the estate cottage. This was seen as a châtelet at the edge of the estate to act as both gateway to the estate and lodgings for the estate manager. Historically these buildings would have originally served a defensive purpose, but over time and with less need to shore up your territory they were designed to harmonise with the mansion house they served, often being offered as tied accommodation for estate workers. This was common in the 19th and 20th century.

We viewed this cottage as a disparate element of the main house fashioned from the remains of the hollowed out whole; positioned elsewhere on the estate but connected across the landscape by a linear ride. It is the ‘trade’ entrance to the estate, allowing the estate manager to meet and manage deliveries and to organise the agricultural workforce during busy seasonal periods.

Research: Absence & Presence

Starting the conceptual journey for a new project, finding reference to communicate early ideas & thoughts when there's no drawing or fixed site. This helps to bring a client on board when what you say tends to sound totally pretentious... As usual I drift towards graphic design for inspiration, this time the Swiss Style and Armin Hofmann's typography. I don't have the discipline to be typographer, unlike some of my friends, I'm too much of a magpie.

Caring Wood Story: Escarpment

An early site model prepared in advance of planning explains the position of the house on the escarpment and the intended landscape strategy that was starting to emerge around the dwelling. From the south the house sits as a single storey structure with an enormous roof, almost (..almost..) domestic in scale; but from the north, as the land drops away, the structure becomes more dramatic, nearly four storey in height, evoking the spirit of a castle or ramparts sitting on a promontory.
The single most important decision was to tilt the building down the slope, which shifted the near orthogonal geometry into a much less rigid, more fluid, configuration.

A wet wet wet site visit to a self build near the Preseli mountains. Examining some completed Welsh larch cladding planed by the local sawmill & now out to weather gracefully.

This is slow build ... a few hours a day for the last two years ... I think Charles our client is hoping he can move straight into retirement when he finishes this, bypassing his fifties altogether. My kids will have kids and all cars will be electric.

Caring Wood Story: Siting form

Come the summer of 2010 we were testing the scale and form of the building on the site, working through the topographic data to understand how much of this escarpment we were about to excavate in order to make the house ‘of’ the hill not ‘on’ the hill (to use Frank Lloyd Wright’s phrase). The house shifted along the escarpment being tested in various positions, rotated to create different viewpoints and to dramatically change the reading of its geometry. We eventually settled on a final position and started cutting sections to understand the levels that could be achieved within the existing topography, and how much of the building would be submerged.

James’s image holding an early sketch model at the chosen site location reminds me of that Father Ted sketch where Dougal is being taught perspective by Ted using a plastic cow.

Aeron Parc

A new project has been added to our website.
http://www.ruralofficeforarchitecture.co.uk/projects/48/aeron-parc

The development of a rural smallholding in mid Wales manifested as the reorganisation and extension to two existing dwellings on the same land. A set of russet interventions creates various elements of domestic and agricultural accommodation to support a family of vegetable growers.
Drawing on the tones and character of the surrounding settlements one colour is applied to every intervention. These interventions helped to reorganise the hierarchy and circulation of the site and create amenity space that benefits from sunlight but provides shelter from the wind. A new biomass plant room provides heating to both dwellings from a centralised location.

Caring Wood Story: The Journey

This sketch set out our ambitions for the estate and allowed us to anchor our thinking on matters beyond the house, turning to the landscape to consider the journey, the pattern language for planting and how to encapsulate Kent within the land that formed the estate. In those early days we were working with @jonathanbellstudio to establish the landscape principles, using his knowledge to understand the native palette of species and planting, and to assess the site's soil and geology.

Caring Wood Story: The journey

This painting by John Wootton of Cassiobury Park near Watford dates from the 1750s. It captured our imagination when we were trying to establish how to approach the house and the experience a visitor would have when travelling through the estate before arrival. Siting the building away from the entrance, where the previous approval had been granted, meant creating a new track from the north. This offered the opportunity to build anticipation of your arrival whilst also giving glimpses of the house in the distance along the journey.

Caring Wood Story: The Arts & Crafts

Around the same time James and I were revisiting much of the Arts and Crafts portfolio, researching a period of house building before the Great War, which embraced craft, truth and honesty of material. Gavin Stamp’s book on Lutyens became a particular reference bible as we examined the way in which vernacular materials had been applied to buildings of great complexity and character. Voysey, Norman Shaw (pictured - I love the window above the door) and others allowed us to think differently about the conventions of modern building design.

Our ambition to create a house of Kent meant understanding the vernacular application of materials and how to simplify, to exaggerate the architectural form they were to clad.
