If you know me, you know I like to stay busy (okay that’s an understatement). My business is my baby, I love my clients, love what I do, and saying no to great families is THE hardest thing for me. Day off, what’s that? But I’ve learned the hard way that there’s such thing as “too much”. Too much work and no play. So Saturday we did just that. I turned off the computer, left my phone at home (HIGHLY recommend), forgot about my to do list for a few hours, and we went outside to play. We rode the light rail, saw the downtown library, ate waffles, and did a fun walk by Husky stadium on the way home. It was just the recharge I needed, and we made memories as a family we’ll never forget. I’m not so great at this down time thing, but I know it’s important, and I’m seeking balance more than ever. Now, during my craziest time of year, I’m finding time to enjoy meals with my family, fit in some yoga (even 5 min in the living room) and turn off the devices at the end of the day and open a book instead. I’m letting go of the guilt, the idea that these things are “selfish”, and realizing as much as I take care of other people, I need to take care of myself too. As one client told me, “you can’t pour from an empty cup”. 🙏🏻❤️

If we could order up sun for every session we would. But rainy shoots happen often this time of year, and they can still produce fun images. Despite our best efforts to avoid it, it RAINED during this session. Not just a sprinkle but pouring rain. You wouldn’t know it from the photos. The family was so wonderful, we laughed it off and made the best of it. Rain isn’t the end of the world (at least not for this shutterbug)! 🌦 @lindsaysaid dressed everyone so well for the conditions - boots and knit hats for the win!
Cute picture of 3 beautiful children. What you don't see is the emails back and forth between mom and me about how her son ran a fever the day before and should we reschedule (he got better), all the texts exchanged about moving up the start time, then moving it back because of the weather, and the last minute phone call with a decision to location change back to UW and it’s covered spots because, well, it's raining after all. You don't see the goofy photographer and parents behind the camera making fools of ourselves for smiles and yelling things like “boogers” and "you get ice cream after this!". You miss the baby nodding off shortly after this because it was smack in the middle of nap time. Perfect sessions don’t exist. Perfect doesn’t exist. We create beautiful images out of the REAL, often messy and chaotic moments with children (and PNW weather!). Please remember that, and know how beautiful you are, as you are. We don’t need perfect to find beauty.
Books and mini book orders are coming in too, because they make AWESOME gifts for parents and grandparents. Order through the online store and email me if you need any help! More details about holiday ordering in today’s story too.
