While walking through the streets of Arashiyama we enjoyed the crisp fall air, foliage, and a local beer from a street vendor. This town is filled with small shops, temples, and a bamboo grove. The river pictured here is called the Hozu river, it was historically used to transport wood for building the nearby temples.

Takemi Kajichi no Mikoto, is a deity in Nara Prefecture in mainland Japan. This "thunder god" is said to have appeared at the peak of Mt. Mikasa riding a white deer from Kashima Shrine. Deer in Nara have been considered sacred and divine creatures since this day. Until 1637, killing a deer was a capitol offense punishable by death. After WWII, these deer were no longer considered sacred, but instead national treasures protected by law. Today when you walk the streets in Nara, you are accompanied by fearless deer who are trained to beg for food by bowing at people passing by.

This is Ninen-Zaka street in Kyoto, Japan. It is a serene part of town, which is quite quiet in the morning. It is a pedestrian only road leading up to the foot of Kiyomizu Dera Temple. The shophouses have been traditionally restored, making you feel like your walking though the historic streets of Japan's old capital city. #kyoto #travel #japan #traveljapan #explorejapan #ig_japan #ig_travel #traveldeeper #traveltheglobe eworld

This golden ornament sits on the ridge of the Osaka Castle. This mythical creature is called a #Shachihoko, it is a golden fish with a dragon face. The fish is thought to spray water out of its moth to protect Osaka Castle from fire. Unfortunately, when Japan was in civil conflict in 1868, the castle was burned down in spite of the golden creature. #鯱 #osaka #osakacastle #fish #dragon #fire #protection #japanlover #traveldeeper #travel #japan #japanese #japantravel #traveller #traveling #travelblog #japantrip #asiatravel #asiatrip #japanstyle #japaneseculture #photographer #travelasia #travelinggram #japanfocus

This is an incense burner outside the entrance to Sensoji Temple in Tokyo. It is called a Jokoro. People can be found here waving the smoke onto themselves before entering because the smoke is thought to heal the body. People around the incense burner tend to cover their heads with smoke. This is based on the belief that by healing your head, you will become smarter. #sensojitemple #jokoro #buddisttemple #healing #tokyo #japan #explorejapan #traveljapan #igtravel #igjapan
