Creating #spaces that help us appreciate the things we often overlook isn’t easy. That’s why we love fujiko nakaya’s #Fog bridge. High pressure hoses running along the sides of a bridge connecting two San Francisco piers #create temporary fog banks that contrast against the midday sun, letting you walk through and wonder at the beauty of the city’s fog - something that rolls in every day and can be all too easy to ignore.

The mists are coming back to Northern #California. This is great news, mostly for the victims of the fires that have been raging. But also for #waterspots. It’s catching water! So excited to track its success this winter season 🌫

We flew out of Oakland a while ago and loved how easy it was to go from #pubic transit to the #airport. The city invested in a new rapid #transit connection and it finally opened in 2014. Lots of #cities are connecting their public #transportation systems with their airports, but not enough. Take LA. One of the biggest and busiest airports in the country, its public transit links are not up to par with the millions of people moving through the space each year. Making our transit #systems easier to use is key to minimizing our energy usage and mitigating #climate change impacts. But improvements take money. How much are we willing to invest in our future?

Thinking through our #transportation future, we’ve gotta talk about drones. Human-ferrying #drones are a soon-to-be reality. Dubai is already experimenting with the systems, using #drones that can carry a single #passenger weighing up to 220 pounds and a small suitcase for 30 minutes. According to the Associated Press, using these systems means a drone traveler climbs into the drone and inputs a destination within 31 miles, then takes to the sky at a speed of 62 mph. The drone is monitored via a #control room.
.
But, like the car, these systems still focus on #individual travel. In silicon valley, wealthy power players eager to cut down on the time they spend in Bay Area traffic, are directly #investing in drone companies, a departure from the norm. Pushing for these individualized systems still leaves the majority of us in the cold when it comes to accessible, functional #transit.
.
Ensuring that #cities are mobile for all residents is a critical aspect of #urban life, now and in decades to come. It's another way to define #freedom. The city of the future could be the place where we're all free to move in the greatest variety of ways. Or it could be the place where only the wealthy and connected are able to avoid the #gridlock on the ground.

Took a trip to @swissnexsf last week and found our new favorite #climate engagement piece - climate garden 2080. When it comes to finding ways to negotiate #climate change, #transportation is a big deal. The ways we get from place to place can be huge #emitters. Which begs the question -- what are the transit systems out there really pushing for greater levels of public #transit in hard to navigate areas?
.
Bogota's TransMilenio is one to know. The system moves close to 2.5 million people a day, more than many #metros. They run in dedicated lanes. Stand on a bridge at rush hour and you see clear #bus lanes parallel a snake of traffic. BRT feels like a subway but it’s all above ground.
.
This format is a real advantage for developing #cities. Rather than investing in expensive, static lines that might become obsolete in a few years, rapid bus lines push #public transit in #flexible ways. As the city grows, bus lines can shift along with it.
.
But the #TransMilenio has its problems, particularly desperate #crowding as its private operators fail to add more capacity. The optimism that grew after its opening in 2000 has started to wane. Still, the system’s success during Bogotá's transformative years offer an enduring lesson for cities everywhere. By spending #resources and designing cities in a ways that allow for #flexibility and change, we can make cities that help us all get stronger, more #resilient, more connected, more #active and more #free.

The streets of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley are filled with smoke from the #fires raging the north bay. Folks lucky enough to be #safe are wearing masks to go outside. Makes me think back to this past weekend, sitting by the #water and breathing fresh clean #air.
.
Good air #quality is a gift we can’t take for granted. With #climate change though, air quality is predicted to deteriorate more and more as time goes on. Face masks and hermetically sealed off buildings are slated to become the norm, regardless of where we live.
.
Curbing emissions today, taking care of our street trees and managing brush and forest fire risk in our areas are all things we can do to keep breathing fresh air in the years and decades to come.

It's official. Trump is rolling back another of Obama's #climate change policies. We knew this was coming but it's still no less frightening. With Pruitt, Trump's EPA chief, saying things like "the war on coal is over" there's lots to be concerned about.
.
Moves like this position the US to emit more and more #greenhousegases as the years go on, gases that will seriously increase the impacts climate #change will enact. That means more Harveys and Irmas and #wildfires like the ones currently harming the lives and homes of so many Californians.
.
Some states and environmental groups will fight these moves but to address climate change in a real way, we have to be unified. There's no way to sugarcoat it -- actions like these seriously hinder what's already the most complicated work our species has ever had to face.

17 #wildfires are burning across #California, turning hundreds of thousands of acres to ash. As @nytimes reported, an unusually wet winter led to lots of brush growing in the spring, and the state’s #hottest summer on record dried it all to tinder. All that has made for a dangerous October, the month where California gets its driest air and highest winds setting in from the north and east.
.
While people in the #Southeast have suffered devastating floods and hurricanes, it's been a particularly brutal wildfire #season in the West. As of Oct. 6, wildfires have raced through 8.5 million acres, well above the last decade’s average of six million per year.
.
And now folks in the northern Bay Area counties and farther north to Mendocino are fleeing their homes from blazes firefighters aren't yet able to tame. We're thinking of them and hoping for their safety.

Thinking of the devastating #fires raging across Sonoma, napa and yuba counties in the #BayArea. More than 20,000 have been evacuated, some with little notice.
.
It's dry #season in California, and super easy for fires like these to #ignite and spread.
Complicating matters are low humidity levels in the #region and a lack of resources, Napa County Fire Chief Barry Biermann told local reporters. Without the right supplies, there's nothing firefighters can do to get in front of the blazes.
.
#Resources are arriving in the area but not before people have died (eleven deaths are reported so far) and thousands of homes have #burned.
.
#Resilience means being prepared. We could have been better prepared for this.

Here's another launch into the rising #economic costs of climate change -- air travel. The world's #airports -- the hubs of an industry that moves nearly half of the world's #population each year -- were built for the conditions of an older, colder time. Most are located near #coasts or along river deltas, and many have shorter runways to accommodate #space limits from adjacent developments.
.
#Climate change makes these conditions increasingly unmanageable. #Sea level rise and intensifying storm #surge are threatening low lying facilities. Rising #temperatures make for hotter tarmacs -- as a result, takeoff weights are lowered or heavier planes have to wait to take off until later in the day. Making the necessary investments to accommodate these changes is expensive -- trillions of dollars in #infrastructure projects are slated for the coming years.
.
But in many ways, airports and air carriers are ahead of the game. Because their #business is already being directly affected by climate change, they're more motivated to act. Understanding the #changes headed our way and the ways they're slated to affects us is key to taking #action.

A new report just came out estimating the last decade’s cost of #extreme weather at roughly $240 billion. That’s enough to provide free tuition for 13.5 million Americans at public four year universities.

But despite its size, that number doesn’t include the past month’s major #hurricanes or the 79 wildfires that tore through the American West this summer. In the next ten years, the price of #weather is estimated to rise to at least $360 billion each year, potentially crippling the #economy.

We hear a lot about the economic #cost of shifting to green technology and more efficient #energy sources – that it would hurt #businesses to an unacceptable degree. But as the impacts of #climate change grow more intense, the cost of not making those shifts will only rise and rise and rise.

We've been fans of @luftwerk, the chicago-based multi-media #installation artists, for a long time. Their new public piece, White Wanderer, is another powerful reason to fall for them. As described on their project's Kickstarter campaign, White Wanderer takes inspiration from the Larsen C ice shelf in Antarctica, which broke off into the Weddell Sea back in July. Using real life #recordings of the sounds and frequencies of melting and moving #glaciers, the #artists create a haunting and contemplative soundtrack of climate change that few have heard.
.
These glacier sounds accompany a scaled representation of the 120-mile crack in the Larsen C ice shelf, positioned directly onto the building façade at 2 N. Riverside Plaza in Chicago to help people imagine the #scale and scope of #climate change. Each day, 30,000 people pass through the plaza, making it an ideal location for a public #art installation.
.
A #collaboration with NRDC, White Wanderer invites us to stop, listen, look, and get #curious about the faraway places and massive changes that are affecting us all. So inspiring 🙏
