"I'm American-Haitian. Growing up in Brooklyn, I wanted to see my roots. And seeing the Haitian immigrants come to this country and really make something for themselves and for their children really gives me the motivation to be ambitious, to want to do more." - @joekenneth_
[ COMMON THREAD ] - We met up with Storyteller and Artist @joekenneth_ while walking around New York. We have followed each other's journey for awhile so it was great to finally connect and hear his story.
Know your roots. As first-generation Americans we come from those who crossed borders, oceans, and migrated across countries to find a better life. Our goal in creating Tailored Heritage has always been to have a platform which conveys the beauty found in stories as diverse and meaningful as ours. We create, and in doing so look to learn more about ourselves and the world around us. Becoming more humbled and grounded after each experience.
What compels you to create? When we take photos we find something that is interesting to us and we capture it. It's the search for the most intriguing part of a subject that comes to tell a story. And what we search for in our creation helps us discover more about ourselves.
I finally picked up my film camera a few months ago and am absolutely loving the experience. I tend to have a "trigger-finger" when shooting w/digital cameras, so switching to film has taught me a lot about patience. Appreciating the moment for what it is and letting the journey itself be my guiding light. ~ @u_issa
What we create is an extension of ourselves. Realizing that we have the power to author the narrative of our lives is both empowering and scary. It's empowering because if we employ self-awareness, we can take control of our narrative and write our story no matter our circumstances. It can also be a scary thing because for the first time we will have to take responsibility because the path is not laid out for us, we are creating it for ourselves. This is a discipline that we struggle with everyday. With so many pressures in life it can be easy to get distracted from the fact that we're our most powerful ally and enemy. At the end of the day we are the only ones that can take control and create the life we want.
