What is your favourite style of beer?
With so many great beers available these days, it’s hard to pick a favourite. I love a good Pale or an IPA, but I’m also a huge fan of Stouts & Porter’s. I love it when you find a beer that makes you stop and think. “Wow! that’s amazing!”
A beer that did this for me is now just a memory. Back in 2012 Malt Shovel/Mad Brewers had a small batch limited release called Hoppy Hefe, A 7% American Pale/Wheat Ale. Before the big IPA push that has been in flavour over the last few yrs, this was the one that made me love hops, hops & more hops. I couldn’t get enough of it. If I found it somewhere hiding in a bottle shop I’d buy them all not knowing if I was going to find it again. The relationship between the Hoppy Hefe & I only lasted a few months until the last bottle was gone, but my love for big hops had just begun!
So I guess on that i’d have to say my favourite style would be a big punchy IPA even though I don’t drink them all the time.
If you could open a bar anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I’d probably say NZ. I love the beer scene over there & the availability of ingredients & such clean water. The Sawmill brewery in Matakana is a pretty good representation of what I would love to have, surrounded by rolling green hills.
What made you want to open a bar?
There was a big hole in the craft beer world in our local area as far as having a venue to go to. It was frustrating for me that if I wanted to go out to get a good beer, I had to travel so far. Aside from that, I love beer & talking about beer. What better way to share that than in your own bar.
The Bench boys have other jobs, what is yours?
My other work (which I don’t do much of these days) is Drafting, after almost 20 years behind the computer it was time to make a change, I still do a few little jobs here & there. I spent a few years in the fitness industry and still love it but my main focus these days is The Bench.
