Note to self- wash hair and make effort more often 🀞🏾 Also try to to consistently avoid peanut butter and snot in the mornings- it seems to pay off in compliments about appearance. Sleep hygiene (preparing the body for good quality sleep) is something a lot of patients do poorly 😴😴 The minute we get stressed or anxious often our sleep is first to suffer. I have loads of sleep hygiene tips for patients but I find that screen time before bed is where most people get it wrong. The blue light in screens (TV, iPad, phones) is shocking for sleep- it STOPS the brain from making sleep hormones. It engages the brain when we should be trying to slow it down before bed. My rule for patients working on sleep hygiene- NO screens in the hour before bed. Playing with your phone in bed, watching a movie- nope, not tonight, turn it off. I'm feeling a touch stressed so tonight I'm doing my slow wind down in the hour before bed- warm shower, 5 minute body scan meditation. What's your wind down routine? Dinner tonight πŸ₯—Today 2 patients couldn't understand how someone can eat 5 serves of veggies per day. I promised proof and here it is! This is my version of San choy bow- free range chicken and whatever veg I could find: broccoli, beans, spinach, zucchini wrapped in lettuce leaves from the garden πŸ₯’πŸ‹My mum taught me how to make this- she is the one pot, veggie loaded super mama; I've always cooked like her, easy, veggie heavy meals. I counted the veggies in this ☺️ In total- 1/2 cup cooked veggie (which is 1 serve of vegetables) + 2 cups of lettuce (raw veg) which is 2 serves of veggies. This meal is 3 out of my 5 daily serves. Boom, easy! At lunch if you have a salad or a sandwich with veg or Mexican beans (like I did today) then you're easily getting 5. Reduced risk of obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and some cancers. It isn't hard I promise. Once you start veggie loading and planning it becomes second nature. To my 2 patients from today- proof it can be done and quite easily! πŸ˜‹

At the moment lots of councils and maternal child health nurse centres are sending letters to parents in Victoria about a booster dose of the chicken pox containing vaccine (MMRV) as there have been outbreaks recently (lots of them!!). What you need to know- 1 dose of the MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella- which is chicken pox) is given to all kids on the Australian schedule at 18 months, they get plain MMR at 12 months. The single dose is 85% effective at preventing any case of chicken pox. BUT if you give a second dose then it can be 98% effective at preventing the disease. You can either do a booster at least 4 weeks after your first MMRV dose or get a plain chicken pox vaccine earlier (we can give this from 12 months and can give a vaccine containing only chicken pox and nothing else). If you want to do 2 doses to increase your child's protection you need to pay for the dose NOT on the schedule. Have a chat to your GP if you're interested, tag a mate who might be interested. Why prevent chicken pox? It can be awfully uncomfortable for kids and they get excluded from school/childcare/playgroups until the lesions have dried. PLUS it can have serious complications in severe forms of disease like pneumonia, brain infections and sepsis. Miss S is getting her second booster dose in 3 weeks (she has to wait at least 4 after her 18 month immunisations where she had her first MMRV). I've said it before and I'll say it 1,000,000 more times - healthy habits start early! πŸ‘ŠπŸΎ Cherry tomatoes and grapes for Miss S' snack today πŸ…I always always always cut grapes and cherry tomatoes in half or quarters due to the risk of choking. Another tip- fruit in itself is much better than fruit juice for kids. Fruit juice often contains too much sugar without the fibre and pulp a child gets when they eat the fruit directly. Water is the best drink for kids! Snacking on stuff like this is all this peanut knows, sure she loves a cruskit too (who doesn't!!) but for her this is a normal snack- fruit and veg πŸπŸπŸŽπŸ‰πŸŒπŸ…πŸ₯•πŸŒ½πŸ₯‘

Sure you see that I'm cooking, walking, hanging with Miss S, my husbands a great Dad, I live in active wear, I wash my hair rarely. Please, please, please don't for a second think I'm suggesting my life/marriage/parenting is "perfect"- goodness me I'm not sure that even exists. I stress majorly on Mondays as I prep myself and Miss S and our family meals before my 3 days straight of work. I've seen Will once this weekend as he battled his on call shift. Miss S head butted me yesterday - fairly hard on my eyebrow- as she leaned to pick up her penguin. I walked the dogs yesterday and they shat 4 times- that's 4 turds, not including my kid's or my own, that I had to deal with in a single day. THAT is the reality. So guys don't get the wrong end of the stick here- I try to promote health, wellbeing, self care, a realistic image. Don't for a second think a single speck of it is "perfect." Interestingly the highest risk people for thunderstorm asthma are those with hay fever (with or without a history of asthma- it doesn't matter, they are still at increased risk) and those with poorly controlled asthma. Hay fever is the STRONGEST risk factor for developing thunderstorm asthma. What can you do? If you are a hayfever sufferer - it should be treated with nasal steroid sprays and you need to know what to do if you develop asthma symptoms- talk to your GP. For people with asthma that isn't well controlled (you get frequent symptoms, asthma stops you from doing stuff) get checked 😱- you likely need a medication review ASAP. If you're in a risk group for thunderstorm asthma stay indoors and avoid wind gusts when there is a thunderstorm to avoid exposure to the allergens. What shocked most people last year was that many people without a history of asthma needed help- they're the people with hayfever... get checked, see your GP, don't get caught. At the moment I'm suggesting treatment for all my hay fever patients, I'm on a daily nasal steroid spray too! Only 7 days until my beautiful girl gets married πŸ€— Friendships, good healthy ones, are vital πŸ’• I've specified healthy because you don't always find friends who make you feel good about life, who unconditionally support you and who celebrate your successes, and you do all the same for them. A lot of the time we remain in friendships despite the slight toxic element or the mountains of effort it takes- all the time patients admit to me they have people in their life who are negative for their self esteem or mental health. Friendships are a choice, you do have some control over who you choose to keep as a friend (if you want to that is, I do often remind patients they have some control over these things which can be very empowering). Ok this is for all of you who asked which creams we use at home (tag anyone who might find this info helpful!). No product placement here, I don't get sponsored (I wish! πŸ˜‚) - this is what we use every day. First big point- you want to use high oil, low water moisturisers for dry skin. Products like sorbolene (lots of my patients inadvertently use this) can actually make dry skin worse as it's very high in water. We use 1. QV cream (the thick stuff, not the lotion, read on we do use a lotion too)- Miss S gets this every night with a massage all over, on the face too and sometimes in the day as well if we can fit it in. For kids with eczema I get parents to try and do this at least twice a day. 2. Cetaphil lotion- we use this all the time on the downstairs change table for face/legs/whatever bits are dry- it's easier to rub in on the go compared to the creams 3. The Alpha Kerri ointment is for really dry patches (her cheeks sometimes or knees or scratch marks on her face to prevent scarring). All the products are high oil, low water. There are lots of products on the market- as long as its low water, fragrance free you're doing OK!!! Look at this love 😍😍😍

My delicious daughter post bath tonight πŸ› A skin care tip for kids- because I've been having this conversation with lots of patients/parents recently- this peanut has just come out of the bath. We never ever use soap or bubble bath - it's extremely drying for skin 😱 She gets wrapped in this towel to dry on her own- there's no skin rubbing, only patting if needed. Before PJs, nappy and singlet there is ALWAYS a moisturiser massage- mainly to pile moisture into Miss S' skin which is often dry. Because Will and I have a history of allergic conditions like asthma and hay fever Miss S is at increased risk of eczema and daily application of a moisturiser- the right ones- can reduce risk of eczema development in early life. I see lots of kids with dry skin getting bubble baths and no moisturiser after so if you want to have a great routine try ours out!! This girl is a complete legend to hang out with- almost didn't want to put her to bed tonight 😳 β€’

This kid πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ Please note direct eye contact + sensational slurping technique 😜 My bolognaise sauce is veggie packed every time- this batch has 2 big handfuls of silverbeet from the garden and 7 mushrooms 🍝Sometimes I add carrot +/- zucchini; whatever veg is around goes in πŸ₯•πŸ₯’πŸ… My mum taught me that every meal needs some sort of vegetable (be it salad or veggies snuck in) or it's not a complete meal (honestly I heard this a thousand times growing up) and it honestly paid off. Now I'm doing the same for my peanut. A one pot healthy meal for a family that lasts a couple of days is pure gold πŸ™ŒπŸΎ Tomorrow after work I'll make a frittata with wilted spinach, roast pumpkin and tomato - because that's what is left over in the fridge. I love a meal I can sneak veg into easily- getting 5 serves of veggies per day is crucial for prevention of chronic diseases like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and obesity. YES- the screening interval will change from 2 to 5 years for those with normal tests. BUT I'm having lots of women confused about whether they should have a smear if due or wait until the new program- IF YOU ARE DUE NOW STILL HAVE A PAP SMEAR (this is what the guidelines are saying!!). We are still screening women who are due, you still need to go as per the old system for now.
