One of the true joys of my job is hearing commissions come to life in audio, sometimes after years development and discussion with authors, rights holders and all of the @audible_com teams worldwide. I am currently on a train listening to an early copy of The Man on the Mountaintop by Susan Trott and narrated by Stanley Tucci with Toby Jones as Joe. It publishes next Thursday, 9th nov, available for pre order at audible stores internationally now. I don't normally write more than a few lines/puns on here but wanted to share the story of this title and what it means to me... I was first introduced to Susan Trott's Holy Man Trilogy through a book club that my mum was part of - I used to love when the box came round to our house and I'd pilfer a few of the books to read. I was drawn to the funny little square book the Holy Man and having read it, moved swiftly on to the second and third book. I laughed, cried and laughed again at the series of vignettes based around holy joe and the pilgrims that climbed the mountain to meet him yearly, all presenting him with different thoughts, problems and dilemmas. Over the years, I have read and re read them, shared them with friends in need and protected my battered little original copies with my life... Not least because my mum died nearly 20 years ago and they remind me of her and the kindness and strength with which she lived her life and dealt with her illness and the knowledge that she was going to die in her 40s - mortality and loss also being a major theme in TMOTM.
They say you should never meet your heroes, but Susan Trott is quite possibly the most lovely author I have ever worked with (and that's saying something, we're blessed to work with a great deal of wonderful people). Delighted to hear her books in audio, she is over the moon that her independently published books will reach the wider ear, so to speak, and that the wisdom of Joe will live on. They also say that if it ain't broke don't fix it, though in listening to this title today, I'm almost overwhelmed by how right the production team, composer and cast have got this production. Thank you, team! 😍
J when he performed at Wordplay, my spoken word night, 7 years ago today... Also a Tuesday! Before we were friends or anything else besides... Makes me smile to see this now and I'm glad that he is now my best friend, partner in crime and everything else besides. 😘
