Are you a lastminute.com douchebag? [RADvent Calendar Door 14] *
*
*

I have a confession to make, and also a really cool RADvent gift for you.
I am a lastminute.com douchebag.
Tomorrow evening, I'm gathering a few of my southern Superheroes for a festive curry in That London. We set the date weeks ago. I booked a hotel weeks ago.
Then I promptly forgot about it.
Suddenly, it's two weeks before Christmas and I had no restaurant booked. Can you imagine anything more humiliating than traipsing around with 10 people pressing our noses against restaurant windows while they curse me and think up awful things to do to me?
Well, maybe if you did it with no pants it'd be more humiliating.
So, yesterday, I was frantically scanning TripAdvisor looking for a decent curry place – when I stumbled across a magical website. *

Oh holy hell what have I done? [RADvent Calendar Door 12]
*

*

Oh holy shitballs what have I done?
Only entered a bloody pole dancing competition.
It's in April.
And I am sooooooooo far out of my comfort zone right now I can't even remember what it looks like.
I'm off for a private lesson with my instructor, so we can put together a routine for me and make it good enough to perform in front of other human beans... and even though it's just a lesson and a practice session, I'm deeply uncomfortable.
I've been pole-ing for around 12 years now, and in all that time I've never entered a competition. Never.
It's not been "my thing".
I've never wanted to.
I've just been doing it for fun.
Those have been my excuses, and I've stuck to them.
But really? The real reason I've never entered a competition? Is because I've been afraid to do so. Afraid to put myself out there in front of other women and men who've been doing this for less time than me, who'll be looking at me, and judging me.
They will weigh me. They will measure me. And they will find me wanting.
Or at least, that's what I've always thought... *

Do you know how to think? [RADvent Calendar Door 11] *
*
*

Behind RADvent Calendar Door Number 11, I'm giving you perhaps the greatest gift of all.
The gift of thinking.
Because one thing I see people do, in business and out, all the damn time is not thinking.
They have a big hairy problem or challenge, and they tell everyone they can about it... repeatedly. The woe is strong in these ones.
Much woe. Many wailing.
And, you know, I'm not above a bit of woe and wailing myself. It can be cathartic.
It can even be fun.
But in the end, it doesn't get you anywhere useful.
What I don't see much of is people sitting down with a big blank piece of paper, writing their problem at the top, then thinking about how to solve it.
Here's what Earl Nightingale had to say about this: *

Da Vinci's productivity secrets revealed [RADvent Calendar Door 8] *

*

Leonardo Da Vinci’s to-do list was extra AF (as the kids might say).
It was much, much cooler than my to-do list.
We do have one thing in common, though, Leonardo and I: we both carry around a notebook in which we write or draw anything that interests us, fascinates us, excites us…
So behind RADvent Calendar Door Numbero 8, I'm sharing with you this little nugget of wisdom from the great man himself:
"It is useful to constantly observe, note, and consider."
Very true. It is very useful.
Within one of Da Vinci’s notebooks, a curious person unearthed one of his to-do lists – written around 1490 – then translated it. Here it is – and take note of the very specific tasks he's written down. They're not woolly and vague, they're simple and precise: *

Who was born at Christmas time? [RADvent Calendar Door 7] *
*
*

Once upon a time, at Christmas, a very special and beloved person was born.
Amidst much anticipation and under twinkling stars, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer came into the world in 1939, thanks to the pen of Montgomery Ward staff copywriter Bob L. May.
Behind RADvent Calendar Door Numbero 7, I’m giving you the gift of Rudolph’s story… and showing you how you can use it to make yourself stand out.
Montgomery Ward, once one of the biggest department stores in the world, used to buy and give away colouring books for Christmas every year, but that was an expensive thing to do. So in 1939, they asked Bob L. May to create their own book, and Rudolph was born.
What he created became one of the best-known Christmas tales. You know it: a bunch of youngsters, a little bullying, a job to do, some pesky fog, and the under-dog-reindeer done good.
What you might not know is how clever a marketing ploy this was β€” and how lucky Montgomery Ward and Bob L. May were that it took off. I doubt either the company nor the copywriter had any inkling of just how successful it would be.
The department store produced Rudolph as a magazine poem and gave away 2.4 million copies to its customers during the 1939 Christmas period β€” the only year it was made, because of war-time restrictions on paper.
You can imagine how quickly the magazine became a collector's item… *

The pricing elephant in the room [RADvent Calendar Door 6] *
*
*

Behind RADvent Door Numbero 6 comes the simplest tip ever.
Put your prices up by 10%. None of us is charging as much as we could be charging. None of us.
Let me tell you something: price is elastic.
Most of the time, we do not make buying decisions on price alone. Think about it: do you go for the cheapest shoes every time? The cheapest haircut?
Even the cheapest petrol or insurance?
The answer is no.
Apart from a very few total Scrooges, nobody drives miles out of their way to find the cheapest petrol. You go for the convenient one. *

What's your One Thing? [RADvent Calendar Door 4] *
*
*

Quiet as a mouse and just as timid, he raised his left eyebrow.
He couldn't quite bring himself to raise his hand -- he might get noticed. But he could manage an eyebrow, then at least he could say he'd tried.
Of course, nobody would see him, and he wouldn't get to ask his question...
But when asked later, he could say he'd tried.
Raising an eyebrow isn't going to get you noticed. Not in the classroom, not in life, and not in business.
In fact, raising a hand isn't going to get it done, either.
What your industry needs is someone who'll put on their finest finery, rock a top hat, and strut into the centre of the stage with an offer to die for.
Are you raising your hand? Or are you marching in with confidence and fire?
Because if you're not marching in with confidence and fire, you're stuffed.
You don't have to be totally clown-like outrageous. If being loud and proud isn't really you, that's fine... but you do have to do something to get noticed.
You have to do something to stand out from the crowd. *
