Goodnight, books. Goodnight, @literatibookstore. Goodnight, Ann Arbor.
Today has been a blast. Thank you, @visitannarbor, for letting us (@literatibookstore) take over the Instagram account today! We hope everyone had fun following along with our posts, stories, and live videos (books! puppies! Jeffrey Eugenides!) and we hope to see you in our bookstore soon.
We (@literatibookstore) host upwards of 150 events and readings a year. Tonight, we welcome to Ann Arbor Pulitzer Prize winning author Jeffrey Eugenides! (In conversation with the brilliant Claire Vaye Watkins.) We so love his previous novels, including Middlesex, and we’re so excited for his new collection, Fresh Complaint.
Thanks also to everyone following along with our Instagram takeover! We specifically chose today so we could highlight the fact that we bring to Ann Arbor some of the world’s best authors like Eugenides (and Margaret Atwood, David Sedaris, and Roxane Gay, to name a few), as well as some authors who you may not have read before. If you’d like to learn about our readings and events, many of which are free, follow us @literatibookstore or go to our website, literatibookstore.com.
The @literatibookstore Instagram takeover continues! All week, I left this prompt on our public typewriter for people visiting our bookstore. A few of the responses I’ve read:
“All the dogs and how nice people are”
“All the stores are cool”
“The Huron river: going to the crew docks and swimming with friends :)”
“I love Ann Arbor because I get to see my dad”
Over the years, we’ve had thousands of people type on our public typewriter (@publictypewriter). Our logo is based on my grandfather’s 1930s Smith Corona as a nod to our appreciation for thoughtful writing. We even had artist @oliveruberti paint our favorite typewriter notes left by customers along our 4th Ave wall.
Personally, I love Ann Arbor because this town is so supportive of local and independent businesses. It’s a community that believes in buying local, and we have been overwhelmed from the support since we’ve opened.
The @literatibookstore Instagram takeover continues! Ever wonder what Ann Arbor is reading? Here are our bestsellers from: 1.) the last month, 2.) the last year, and 3.) since we opened in spring of 2013!
This is the first time I’ve looked at our all-time bestsellers, and I was thrilled to see our friend John U. Bacon number one! (Be sure to catch him at Rackham Auditorium Nov. 7, 7pm.) I also loved seeing Roxane Gay and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie with two books each!
Though this is a representation of what sells in our downtown store at @literatibookstore, I’d love to hear more of what you guys in Instagramland are reading? What’s the last book you read and loved?
Good morning, Ann Arbor! My name is Mike Gustafson, and I opened @literatibookstore with my wife, Hilary, in 2013. And today, we’re taking over the Visit Ann Arbor Instagram account!
Since we first opened, we’ve had such incredible support from this book-loving community. We began with 7 employees, and now we have 25. We carry around 25,000 titles, host roughly 150 readings and events each year, and we love being in such a vibrant downtown.
Today, I’ll be introducing our store to people who don’t know us, as well as showing people “a day in the life of an independent bookstore.” We have fun things happening today, including a reading with Pulitzer Prize winning author Jeffrey Eugenides tonight. Stay tuned today, and thanks for following along!
